Eric Zimmerman, men’s basketballEric, second year guard scored a game high 29 points to lead the Wesmen to an 86-83 victory over the defending CIS champions Brock Badgers Saturday night at the Wilfrid Laurier Invitational.

MBB TO HOST PEMBINA CHRYSLER INVITATIONAL, SPLIT ON THE ROAD
Head Coach Dave Crook and his team will play host at the Pembina Chrysler Invitational Tournament this Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen will take on Laurentian on Friday night followed by a contest against Concordia on Saturday night. The game on Saturday night will be carried live on 1290 CFRW with Paul Edmonds handling the play by play and Steve Thompson providing the color commentary. Game time both nights is 6:00 p.m. The team is coming off a split in their two games at the Wilfrid Laurier Invitational this past weekend. In Friday’s contest the host Golden hawks defeated the Wesmen 85-74. Peter Lomuro and Eric Zimmerman each scored 18 points to lead the team. On Saturday night the team defeated the defending CIS champions Brock Badgers 86-83. Eric Zimmerman was solid scoring a game high 29 points to lead the Wesmen. Guard Nick Lother was named a Tournament All-Star.
GET TOGETHER, GET ACTIVE AT UWINNIPEG
On Wednesday afternoon, Oct 21st, over 150 students from the grades 4, 5, 6 classes of Sister McNamara will be our guests for Get Together, Get Active @ UWinnipeg! Smaller groups of 10 elementary students will be led through various activity/educational stations set up in the Duckworth Centre. The children will be instructed by University students and student athletes and have the opportunity to try a variety of sports ranging from soccer and juggling to racquet sports and basketball. One of the activities will be a 'rest area' where, for example, they can watch the men's or women's volleyball practice. We are delighted to introduce and involve children from our community to fun and fitness at UWinnipeg.
BASKETBALL CLINIC AT ROSSBROOK HOUSE A SUCCESS
Members of the men’s basketball team were involved in a special clinic for children from the Rossbrook House this past Saturday afternoon at the Victoria Albert School. Special thanks to Diego Contador, Moses Ma, Mike James, Ben Kingdon and Josh McKay for making the clinic a great success.
BASKETBALL MANITOBA SUPER COACHES CLINIC COMING OCT 23-24
Basketball Manitoba, the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg are excited to announce the details the first annual 'Super Coaches Clinic' weekend scheduled for October 23-24 at the University of Winnipeg Duckworth Centre. The clinic comes as a partnership with the University of Manitoba Bisons and University of Winnipeg Wesmen as a joint offering to the basketball community.
The clinic will run at the same time as the province wide 'SAG' in-service day on Friday October 23. The WMBA has also paused all league games this weekend to ensure each coach can attend and is covering the cost for all its league coaches to attend the sessions. The clinic features 14 different presentations over the two days and features a wide range of topics for all levels of basketball. Deadline to register is Wednesday, October 21.
DIG, SET, SERVE, PASS, SPIKE VOLLEYBALL SKILLS CLINICS
Volleyball skills clinics for girls and boys, grades 7-12 are being offered at the University of Winnipeg from October through December. Naoki Miyashita, former Head Coach of the Canadian Women's National Team and current Wesmen Assistant Coach will be the instructor. Cost per clinic is $50.00 for 2.5 hours of skill training and development. Enroll now as each session is limited to 12 athletes. For more information and to register please log onto www.wesmen.ca
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PREPARE FOR U OF M INVITATIONAL
The women’s basketball team will wrap up their pre-season schedule this weekend at the University of Manitoba Invitational. The Wesmen will take on Saskatchewan on Friday night (8:00 p.m.), Manitoba on Saturday (6:00 p.m.) and wrap up the tournament against Toronto on Sunday afternoon (12:00 p.m.). The team will look to rebound after a 74-56 loss to the Cape Breton University Capers in an exhibition game this past Sunday at the University of Manitoba. Amy Ogidan scored a game high 30 points.
VOLLEYBALL TEAMS READY FOR REGULAR SEASON
The men’s and women’s volleyball teams will open up their respective 2009-2010 Canada West regular season schedules this week on the road. The Wesmen will travel to Vancouver later in the week to take on the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday and Saturday. The matches get underway beginning with the women’s match at 8:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time), followed by the men’s match at 10:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time).
