WESMEN VS BISONS THIS WEEKEND
The Wesmen volleyball teams coming off an impressive showing last weekend in Alberta, will host their cross town rivals the Manitoba Bisons in their respective regular season home openers this Friday night at the Duckworth Centre. Match times is 6:00 p.m. (women’s) and 8:00 p.m. (men’s). Friday night is also “Uniform Give-Away Night” as one lucky team in attendance will win a set of volleyball uniforms for their team courtesy of TeamOutfitters, aadidas and the Winnipeg Wesmen. Across town at the University of Manitoba, the Wesmen basketball teams will battle their cross town rivals the Manitoba Bisons. Game time is 6:00 p.m. (women’s) and 8:00 p.m. (men’s).
MEN’S AND WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL FIND SUCCESS AGAINST ALBERTA
The Wesmen volleyball teams found success on the road this past weekend in Alberta. The women’s team picked up their first win of the regular season on Saturday with an impressive 3-1 (30-28, 16-25, 26-24, 26-24) victory over the Pandas, who came into the match undefeated and ranked number three in the country. The victory came after a great effort in Friday’s match where the Pandas beat the Wesmen 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 26-24) in three close sets. The men’s team also had a good weekend picking up a split in their two matches against the number one ranked and defending CIS champions, Alberta Golden Bears. In Friday’s opening match the Wesmen picked up a hard fought 3-2 (19-25, 25-22, 25-21, 23-25, 15-12) victory over the Bears. On Saturday Alberta defeated the Wesmen 3-1 (26-24, 17-25, 25-19, 25-22) in another close match.
BASKETBALL BATTLES ALBERTA
The Wesmen basketball teams opened up their respective regular season home schedules this past weekend against Alberta. On the women’s side, the Pandas defeated the Wesmen Friday night 77-40 but the Wesmen regrouped and were impressive on Saturday defeating Alberta 64-58. The men’s team opened up their two game series on Friday with a 74-56 loss to the Golden Bears. On Saturday night the Wesmen put up a good fight and fell just short in a 71-68 loss.
INTERNATIONAL CLASSIC FOR CLUB TEAMS…REGISTER NOW
For the sixth consecutive year the International Classic will play host to the event of the year for "Club" basketball teams. Dual hosts, the The Jr Wesmen and Manitoba Magic basketball clubs, are encouraging all boys and girls teams from age 8 - 17 to register now for this prestigious tournament. DIG, SET, SERVE, PASS, SPIKE VOLLEYBALL SKILLS CLINICS
Volleyball skills clinics for girls and boys, grades 7-12 are being offered at the University of Winnipeg from October through December. Naoki Miyashita, former Head Coach of the Canadian Women's National Team and current Wesmen Assistant Coach will be the instructor. ERIKA WILLOWS SET TO JOIN WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM
The University of Winnipeg and Women’s Volleyball Head Coach Diane Scott announced last week that Erika Willows from Sturgeon Heights High School has committed to the University of Winnipeg Women’s Volleyball Program for the 2010-2011 season next September.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Matt Schriemer, men’s volleyball – Schriemer, first year opposite played a big part in helping the Wesmen to a weekend split against the number one ranked and defending CIS champions Alberta Golden Bears. In Friday’s five set victory, Matt had 12 kills, five blocks, two defensive digs and one service ace.

Sonia Rossy, women’s volleyball – Rossy, in her first season played a vital part in helping the Wesmen pick up their first win of the season (3-1) Saturday night against the number three ranked and previously unbeaten Alberta Pandas. She finished the match with a team high 17 kills, 20 defensive digs, two service aces and four blocks.

• Fourth place in Canada West Conference with 3.4 digs/per game
