WIN A TRIP TO VEGAS
Attention all Wesmen fans….how does a trip to Las Vegas sound, well it is possible. The Winnipeg Wesmen in conjunction with Out n’ About Travel is giving away a weekend trip to Las Vegas. Draw ballots are available at all Wesmen home games/matches and the Duckworth Customer Service Centre. Each ballot cost $2.00 with all proceeds going towards the University of Winnipeg’s Athletic Scholarship Fund. The draw will be made at the Thu, Feb. 11th basketball game vs Manitoba. All entrants receive a ticket to the game and all entrants must be in attendance to win.

IT’S CRUNCH TIME
The final drive for the playoffs will continue this week for the Wesmen in the second last week of the Canada West regular season. The action kicks off on Wednesday night as the Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Teams take on their cross town rivals the Manitoba Bisons. (Women 6:00 p.m., Men 7:30 p.m.). The volleyball teams will hit the court at the Duckworth Centre against the Regina Cougars on Friday and Saturday. The Women’s Team kicks off the action at 6:00 p.m. followed by the Men’s match at 8:00 p.m. On Saturday evening the Men’s match will take place at 6:00 p.m. followed by the women’s match at 8:00 p.m. The Wesmen Basketball Teams will head to Regina for their final regular season road trip against the Regina Cougars. Game times both nights are 6:15 p.m. (women) and 8:00 p.m. (men).

The action was intense all weekend long for the three Wesmen teams that saw action this past
weekend at the Duckworth Centre and on the road. The Women’s Basketball Team had a successful weekend winning both games against Lethbridge. The Men’s Basketball Team took on the Pronghorns in two tough games. On the road in Burnaby, the Women’s Volleyball Team earned a split in their two match series against the Clan.

At the Duckworth Centre Friday night, the Women’s Basketball Team had a strong second half in a 72-63 victory. Catie Gooch led the Wesmen with a game high 22 points. Alex MacIver had a career best 20 points. Jessica Stromberg added a double-double 10 points, 10 rebounds. In the late game, the Men’s Basketball Team was defeated 87-58. Nick Lother led the team with 13 points. Eric Zimmerman and Peter Lomuro finished with 12. On the road in Burnaby, BC, the Women’s Volleyball Team fell short in a tough 3-2 (25-23, 18-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-10) loss to Simon Fraser. Sonia Rossy led the Wesmen with a match high 20 kills. Ariel Smith finished with 10.

The action continued at the Duckworth Centre Saturday night. The Women’s Basketball Team completed a weekend sweep defeating Lethbridge 85-77 in a thrilling double overtime contest. Amy Ogidan led the team with 27 points. Catie Gooch and Jessica Stromberg each scored 14. In the Men’s game, the Wesmen fell short in a 70-52 loss. Mike James led the Wesmen with 15 points. The Women’s Volleyball Team earned a split in their two match series with the Clan with an impressive 3-1 (26-24, 25-23, 20-25, 25-16) victory. Sonia Rossy led the Wesmen with 13 kills. Ariel Smith finished with 12.

WESMEN SAY THANKS

The Winnipeg Wesmen paid appreciation to two special groups this past weekend. The Winnipeg School Safety Patrols and the Winnipeg Police School Education Unit were special guests of the Wesmen at this past Friday’s Basketball games against Lethbridge. The following night was WMBA night at the Duckworth Centre. Hundreds of players and coaches were in attendance cheering on the Wesmen.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Mike James, men’s basketball – James, fourth year forward was one of the most consistent players for the team in the two weekend games against Lethbridge. Mike, scored a team high 15 points and added six rebounds, three blocks and a pair of steals in Saturday’s game.

•    10 rebounds
•    Five blocks
•    Four assists, two steals
•    Team leader averaging 5.8 rebounds per game.

Jessica Stromberg, women’s basketball – Stromberg, fifth year guard had back to back double-doubles in helping the Wesmen to a two game sweep over the Lethbridge Pronghorns. In Saturday’s 85-77 double overtime victory, she scored 14 points and added game high 13 rebounds. Stromberg forced a second extra frame  draining three free throws with eight seconds left in the first overtime session to tie the score.
