DEVIN SCHMIDT COMMITS TO UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG MEN’S VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM
Thursday, March 5, 2009 – The University of Winnipeg is pleased to announce that Devin Schmidt from Sturgeon Heights Collegiate has committed to joining the University of Winnipeg Men’s Volleyball program this September.
Schmidt, 6’5” middle is currently completing his final year at Sturgeon Heights Collegiate French Immersion Program with an overall academic average of 92%.
Devin was selected as a MHSAA Graduating All-Star this past season and was one of the top players in the province according to Wesmen Head Coach Larry McKay. Currently playing with the Winnipeg Strike club team, Schmidt was chosen as the Manitoba Volleyball Association 17U Male Club Player of the Year and was selected as a MVA “club” Provincial All-Star in 2008. A talented basketball player as well, he spent the last three summers as a member of the Manitoba Provincial Team Program.
As one of the top athletes at Sturgeon Heights, Schmidt was selected as the 2007/08 Varsity Boys MVP and the Junior Varsity Athlete of the Year in 2006/07.
Schmidt decided that with volleyball being his sport of choice, the University of Winnipeg was the right place to attend university and the Wesmen Men’s Volleyball Program the right place to further his volleyball career.
“Devin is a strong athlete who attacks and blocks well as a middle. He is very competitive and is one of the top rated players in grade 12 in his position”, stated Wesmen Head Coach Larry McKay.
