DEREK MILLER COMMITS TO MEN’S VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM
Thursday, April 30, 2009 – A provincial champion is set to join the University of Winnipeg Men’s Volleyball Program. Head Coach Larry McKay is pleased to announce that Derek Miller from Miles MacDonell Collegiate has committed to joining the Wesmen this September for the start of the 2009-2010 season.
Miller, a 6’5” middle was a member of the Buckeye squad that captured the 2008 AAAA Provincial Volleyball Championship. He was named a Manitoba Volleyball Association Graduating All-Star in 2007 after helping Miles Mac reach the finals of the AAAA Provincial Championship. Derek played club volleyball with the Winman team and was a two time National Champion in 2005 and 2006. A multi sport talent, Derek has received numerous All-Star awards at various tournaments in volleyball, hockey, soccer and lacrosse.
"We are pleased another top Manitoba volleyball player has chosen our university to further his academics and our volleyball program to further his athletics. Derek is a versatile skilled player who can play in the middle or outside position. His serve receive ability in particular is noteworthy given he has played primarily as a middle. Middles rarely serve receive but Derek is exceptional”, added Wesmen Head Coach Larry McKay.
