Villaneuva Named MCAC Male Athlete of the Week

Thursday, February 14, 2013 - The University of Winnipeg Wesmen in conjunction with The Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference are pleased to announce that College Wesmen Men's Basketball Player
Mike Villanueva
has been named the MCAC Male Althlete of the Week for week 17 of the season.

At home on Feb. 3 against CMU, the College Wesmen pulled out a 72-68 win. The win locked in their #2 seed in the conference, mostly thanks to a clutch shot late from guard Mike Villanueva.

The third-year six-foot guard scored 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field, including 2-for-4 from three-point range. More importantly, though, with his team down two with seven seconds left, he knocked down a three - putting the College Wesmen up one. Finishing it by making three free throws in the final moments, Villanueva sealed the win and the seeding.

“Mike is one of those players who wants to take the big shot,” said College Wesmen head coach Grant Richter. “When the game is on the line, we want the ball in Mike's hands."

The 22-year-old Villanueva is a graduate of Sisler High School, and is studying in the faculty of arts and science.

College Wesmen visit Shamattawa First Nation

The University of Winnipeg College Wesmen team traveled to Shamattawa First Nation, an isolated northern community for a day of basketball fun. The College Wesmen Men's Basketball team partnered with The Winnipeg Aboriginal Sport Achievement Centre to make this event possible. Students from Abraham Beardy Memorial School enjoyed a day of drills and games, and even had a full court scrimmage vs. the visitors.

Brittany Rosenfelt Named MCAC Female Athlete of the Week

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 - The University of Winnipeg Wesmen in conjunction with The Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference are pleased to announce that College Wesmen Women's Basketball Player Brittany Rosenfelt has been named the MCAC Female Althlete of the Week for week 15 of the season.

The College Wesmen maintained a perfect road record (4-0) on Jan. 25 as they earned a 62-56 win over top-seed Red River College. The two teams are neck and neck for the top seed mostly thanks to Rosenfelt, who filled her stat line on Jan. 25 with 11 points (on 4-of-7 shooting), seven rebounds, and two blocks.

“Brittany is a force to be reckoned with... and doesn’t fear to be assertive,” said College Wesmen head coach Suki Chhoeun. “She’s a forward who can hit the three and can effectively post players up inside.”

“She has scoring abilities that are dynamic, she’s a leader by example and most importantly, an athlete who comes to work both on her game days and in practice.”

The College Wesmen sit at 6-2 and can finish a perfect road record with wins over CMU and Providence University College on Feb. 1 and Feb. 15, respectively.
