The University of Winnipeg Duckworth Centre provides participants with top quality instruction tailored for all levels of ability. We offer a wide variety of programs ranging from badminton to zumba and also included is several martial arts programs.
Membership to the Duckworth Centre is not required to register for these programs unless otherwise noted.

Badminton
Program Dates: January 10th - April 29th, 2012
Days/Times: Tuesday 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. Sunday 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

The University of Winnipeg Badminton Club offers a unique badminton experience for recreational players: skilled coaching and guest coaches, sport specific training, organized play, play up to 4 times per week, and feather shuttles, all within a supportive yet competitive atmosphere. Space is limited!!
Capoeira
Program Dates: January 10th - April 29th, 2012
Days/Times: Tuesday 8:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. Sunday 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Location: Aux Gym
Is a Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, sports, and music. It was created in Brazil mainly by descendants of African slaves with Brazilian native influences, probably beginning in the 16th century. It is known by quick and complex moves, using mainly power kicks and quick leg sweeps, with some ground and aerial acrobatics, knee strikes, take-downs, elbow strikes, punches and headbutts.
Fencing
Program Dates: January 10th - April 24th, 2012
Days/Times: Tuesday 4:30 - 5:30

The sport of fencing develops many physical components, including: agility, strength, coordination, balance, timing, and strength. Psychologically, fencing incorporates mental strength to deal with stress, discipline, and quick decision-making.
There are three disciplines in fencing: Epee, Foil and Sabre. They each differ in sword, footwork, speed, tactics and technique. The Manitoba Fencing Association provides all of the equipment and staff to ensure the safety and experience of the student. Hopefully, this will lead to more competitive fencers joining the many competitive fencing clubs or creating a club at the University of Winnipeg.
Judo

Days/Times: Monday: 8:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.(Fighting Class) Wednesday 8:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. (Advanced) and Saturday: 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Judo (Youth)
Program Dates: January 11th- April 28th, 2012
Days/Times: Wednesday 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Saturday 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. (Beginner Classes)

Judo, meaning "the gentle way", evolved from the art of Japanese Samurai fighting, in 1532, as a modified system of attack without weapons. Judo is a grappling sport where two opponents try to defeat each other using specific moves and holds, either in standing or ground combat.
The goal is to score one point by throwing, holding or immobilizing the other opponent for a certain amount time to win the match. Governed by a strict set of rules, safety of all participants is ensured. Judo can be practiced by any age or background, including disabled persons and seniors.
Weight Training
The University Winnipeg Duckworth Centre allows Judo Club members to purchase yearly passes for a discounted rate of $129/year. This includes access to weight training sessions, the track and sauna.
Kendo
Program Dates: January 9th - April 26th, 2012
Days/Times: Monday 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. & Thursday 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Location: Aux Gym
Kendo is the traditional Japanese martial art of fencing. Its principles are grounded in the historical culture of the Samurai. Through rigorous training and the application of Budo philosophies, one learns to strengthen the mind, body and spirit to enrich and contribute to everyday life. This sport is particularly appealing to those interested in extreme sports, Japanese culture or Asian business and philosophy.
For beginners, comfortable athletic wear is acceptable. Students will be required to purchase a Shinai (bamboo sword) within the first few weeks of joining and can be ordered through the club.
Our club is open to all persons aged 10 years and up.

Racquetball
Racquetball League: Thursday 6:00-10:00 PM
Racquetball MB Membership Students: $10.00 Public: $20.00
Duckworth Centre Membership is required to participate in the League
Racquetball Junior Program: Ages 8 to 12 - Tuesdays from 5:45 to 6:45pm
Session 1 - September to December / Session 2 - January to March
$50 per Session plus $10 Racquetball Manitoba Membership
Duckworth Centre Membership Not Required for Junior Program

Squash Ladder
The U of W squash ladder is open to any member of the Duckworth Centre. The ladder consists of players of all levels of skill and interest. New and experienced players will find levels of play that suit their interest and skill level.
Players compete in rounds of play with 5-6 players over four weeks, at the end players move up and down the ladder depending on their wins and losses. A season of the squash ladder typically consists of six or seven rounds of play.
Included in Club Fee:
- Three or four squash and pizza free-for-all's over the season
- The Val and Iain McDougall Cup Tournament (only open to ladder players)
- Clinics for both beginning and experienced players at no additional cost
**Membership to the Duckworth Centre is required to participate in this program**

- Sign Up / Cut Off date to join the Squash Ladder for the season is Wednesday, September 14, 2011.

Tae Kwon Do
Program Dates: January 12th - April 28th, 2012
Days/Times: Thursday 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. & Saturday 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Location: Aux Gym
The Tae Kwon Do program is aimed at the serious student acquiring a Black belt or just an opportunity for someone to try out a martial art. Tae Kwon Do means to punch and kick and we emphasize learning all the techniques on the ground and then in the air.
We also teach self defense: how to escape from certain holds, how to take down an opponent, and how to use a stronger person's strength against them. The course also includes sparring for those who are interested.
Some classes include learning patterns as well as various other activities, such as one and two step sparring, where the students can practice predetermined strategies at a slower pace.
Wing Chung Do Gung Fu
Program Dates: January 12th - April 29th, 2012
Days/Times: Thursday 8:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. and Sunday 12:00 - 2:00 p.m.

MacNeil Wing Chun Do Gung Fu Club trains in a self-defense system developed by the legendary Bruce Lee and defined by original Lee student James W.DeMile.
Our club is an affiliate of Ambrose Academy in Michigan. Brett MacNeil is a level one WCD instructor who has been involved in WCD since 1983. MacNeil is also a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Hall of Fame.

Yoga
Program Dates: January 9th - April 23rd, 2012
Days/Times: Monday or Thursday 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Location: Aux Gym
The Traditional Yoga classes will include body alignment, breath awareness and techniques, stretching and strengthening, balance work, stress reduction and relaxation. The class will be taught to meet the needs of the students in attendance.
Zumba
Program Dates: January 11th - April 25th, 2012
Days/Times: Wednesday 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Location: Aux Gym
Zumba is dance fitness. Which means, dance music, dance moves, to a fitness format. Making it easy for everyone to participate and most importantly to enjoy. The moves are choreographed to make your body work hard!! While your mind takes a little vacation!! Arrrriba!!!
