ARIEL SMITH NAMED TO CIS ALL-ROOKIE TEAM

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 – The University of Winnipeg Wesmen is pleased to announce that first year Women’s Volleyball player Ariel Smith has been selected to the CIS Women’s Volleyball All-Rookie Team at the CIS Women's Volleyball Championship awards banquet this evening in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Smith, a 5’9” left side from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia was a starter in every match for the Wesmen in her first season in the CIS. Smith led the team in service aces (16), defensive digs (202) and placed second on the team in kills (161) and points (187.5).

"We are very pleased that Ariel Smith has been named to the CIS All-Rookie Team. Ariel made the most of her opportunity this year as a starting left side player for the Wesmen Women. She led the team in service reception, defensive digs, serving and attack. For a first year athlete, she showed poise and maturity beyond her years. Ariel left a positive impression on each opponent we faced, gaining respect across Canada West and beyond and the best part is she is still improving! So very pleased and proud of her performance this season, persevering through some tough challenges that will only make her a better player, person and leader for our program”, said Women’s Volleyball Head Coach Diane Scott.
