TOWN NAMED CIS MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Wednesday, February 18, 2009 - The University of Winnipeg Wesmen is pleased to announce that Men’s Volleyball player Andrew Town has been selected as the CIS Male Athlete of the Week. Andrew was also named the Canada West Male Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.
Town, a fourth-year kinesiology student from Winnipeg had 71 kills, 23 defensive digs and 11 blocks as the No. 9 Wesmen upset No. 3 Calgary in three matches in the opening round of the playoffs to advance to this weekend's Canada West Final Four and earn a berth in the CIS championships that will be held in Edmonton from February 27 to March 1st. With the best-of-three series tied at one game apiece, the 6-foot-3 outside hitter smashed a career-high 30 kills in the decisive duel on Sunday as the two rivals battled for five sets for the third straight day, with Winnipeg finally prevailing 29-31, 26-24, 25-22, 24-26 and 15-9.
