CANADA WEST HONORS MVB PLAYERS AHOW AND TOWN
Thursday, February 19, 2009 – The University of Winnipeg Wesmen and the Canada West Universities Athletic Association are pleased to announce that men’s volleyball player Alan Ahow has been named the Canada West Conference nominee for the Dale Iwanoczko Award and team mate Andrew Town has been named to the Canada West Men’s Volleyball First All-Star Team.
Ahow, in his fifth and final year with the Wesmen is the Canada West Conference nominee for the Dale Iwanoczko Award as outstanding student athlete. Ahow is a dedicated student-athlete who has a 4.01 GPA in the combined Arts and Education degree program. This program involves completing the two degrees simultaneously in a very demanding program. Ahow has been named an Academic All-Canadian every year (four years) and will complete his Bachelor of Arts degree this year and complete his Bachelor of Education degree in 2009-10. In the community Ahow has been a volunteer coach of the Grade 7 girl’s volleyball and basketball teams at Arthur Day Middle School (Winnipeg, Mb) and a volunteer coach of the Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute 17u boy’s volleyball team. Ahow also assisted with the implementation of the junior golf program at Harbour View Golf Club. “Alan exemplifies what fantastic role models we have in Canadian university sport. He works hard at his sport and his studies and finds time to spend giving back to others what has been given to him in the past. We are all proud to have him as a teammate and friend,” said Wesmen head coach Larry McKay.
Town, a 6’3” outside in his final season of university level volleyball finished third in the Canada West Conference in kills (306) and pts (338), fourth in kills per game (4.25), fifth in points per game (4.70), and 11th in defensive digs (110). Town had a career high 30 kills in the third and deciding match against the Calgary Dinos last weekend in the Canada West semi-finals. He was recently named both the Canada West Conference and CIS Male Athlete of the Week earlier this week. Town was named the University of Winnipeg Male Athlete of the Month two times during the season (November, 2008 and January 2009) and was named the University of Winnipeg Male Athlete of the Week on four occasions this past season.
