OAK PARK STAR ALYSSA GRANT TO JOIN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PROGRAM

Monday, December 1, 2008 – The University of Winnipeg Wesmen is pleased to announce that Alyssa Grant from Oak Park High School has committed to join the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Women’s Basketball program next September for the start of the 2009-2010 season.

Grant is a 6’0” forward and is rated one of the top players coming out of Manitoba this year. This past summer she was a member of the Manitoba Juvenile Women’s Basketball Team. A prolific scorer and outstanding rebounder Grant averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds per game last season for the Raiders.

“Alyssa at 6'0” uses her size well.  She can post up inside or play the perimeter where she can drive to the net or hit the 3. She is a versatile player. Alyssa has the potential to be a very good CIS player. She can defend, board and score.  Alyssa will be a great addition to our Women's Program. Our Women's Basketball Program is very pleased with Alyssa decision to commit early and begin preparation for our University Program.  Alyssa has been attending individual sessions once a week since early Sept. She is committed to play and make an immediate impact with our Program in Sept. 2009.Oak Park has done a great job developing female basketball players in the Province of Manitoba under Murray Brown.  The University of Winnipeg has been very fortunate to have had many players play at Oak Park and move onto our Women's Basketball Program”, said Tanya McKay, University of Winnipeg Wesmen Women’s Basketball Head Coach.

“In Alyssa Grant the University of Winnipeg will be getting not only an outstanding basketball player but an outstanding person, student and citizen.  Alyssa will be captain of the Oak Park Raiders this season, a season which holds great potential for the Raiders.  A tireless worker, Alyssa accepts that with talent comes the responsibility of hard work and this is a responsibility she lives up to everyday.  We are thrilled to have Alyssa committed to join the Wesmen where she will be able to play with Oak Park alumni Jessica Stromberg and Amy Ogidan next year”, added Murray Brown, Oak Park High School Varsity Girl’s Basketball Head Coach.
