University of Winnipeg Retirees Association (UWRA)
Scholarship and Bursary
The University community and the community at large may be interested to know that the UWRA Scholarship we created in 2010 continues to grow. Recent donations have brought our Endowment beyond the $40,000 mark, and additional donations may be made at any time by going to the University of Winnipeg Foundations website and clicking Give Online at http://www.uwinnipegfoundation.ca
In the spring of 2011 our members approved the creation of a UWRA Bursary, one designed to recognize the service of all University of Winnipeg retirees. Like the Scholarship, this new award is intended to encourage and support a continuing student who has completed at least 60 credit hours and who has a record of volunteerism. The Bursary, however, is reserved for students with financial need, a condition which, regrettably, is all too common.
$10,000 is the minimal target for the creation of an Endowment, which is to say for an award that can be sustained by the accounts fiscal performance. And 2011, namely the first year of creation, maximizes the chances of receiving matching funds from the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative. Donations to the Bursary may also be made via the Foundations website identified above.
In 2011 the Bursary campaign is being directed by a Campaign Committee of five UWRA members. As of 1 September the committee had reached two-thirds of its minimal objective, well in advance of an autumn mail-out appeal to all University of Winnipeg retirees. The latter, more than any other group of retired employees, have a special understanding of the mounting fiscal challenges faced by todays post-secondary students.
