Soccer Tryout Dates Announced

Tryouts For The Newly Formed Men's And Women's Wesmen Soccer Teams Will Be Held On August 21 & 22. The Wesmen Will Play In The MCAC This Season..

The tryout dates for the recently formed University of Winnipeg Men’s and Women’s soccer teams have been announced. The tryouts will take place on Saturday August 21 and Sunday August 22 at the soccer fields located behind Tec Voc Collegiate (1555 Wall Street). Times for the tryouts on Saturday (Aug 21) is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. Sunday's schedule will be announced by Coach Gale at the practice on Saturday.

Head Coach Mick Gale is busy preparing for the Men’s and Women’s soccer teams first season competing in the Manitoba College Athletic Conference (MCAC). The teams will enhance the league schedule by seeking out high caliber exhibition games against CIS, NCAA and international teams.

Coach Gale has had a successful summer recruiting players for the two teams. Currently 19 players have been recruited for the men’s team and 14 players for the women’s team. The teams are looking to be quite strong and the early feeling is they will be able to compete with soccer teams at every level (CIS and NCAA). Many of the team’s recruits are international student athletes and three of the recruits from the women’s team played NCAA division one last season.

The exhibition schedule for both teams is currently being planned out with some potential games against the University of Regina and the University of Saskatchewan (both members of the CIS). The Men’s team is planning a game against Creighton University, the fourth ranked NCAA team.

After completion of the soccer season and the December break, Futsal will start in January for the men’s and women’s teams as well as inner city youth teams competing against local club teams. The inner city youth teams will feature boys and girls and feature five to 10 players per team.

It has been a busy summer for Coach Gale as he has been out supporting and teaching at several community summer camps in collaboration with the Winnipeg Soccer Association and the Spence Street Neighborhood.

“We are extremely pleased with the recruiting and progress of the soccer teams as they continue off-season preparation for the soccer season.  Our new Head Coach Mick Gale is as advertised, as he has been able to attract top quality student athletes from literally around the globe.  We have players coming from England, we have local players returning home after playing NCAA division 1 in Florida. It’s an exciting time for our program”, said Grant Richter, UWinnipeg Director Athletic Program Development and Community Liason.
