UWINNIPEG ADD COMPETITIVE SOCCER TEAMS

Saturday, June 19, 2010 - The University of Winnipeg is expanding their athletic programs. The university will add men’s and women’s soccer teams to its competitive athletic program list this September. The teams will compete in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) this fall with the intent of competing at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) level beginning with the 2011-2012 season.

“Soccer is a popular sport that has shown increased interest in the downtown and Aboriginal communities”, said Doran Reid, University of Winnipeg Athletic Director. “We want to develop our youth soccer programs with the same commitment we have given our inner-city Junior Wesmen basketball and volleyball teams, and likewise, we want to develop our competitive soccer teams with the same efforts we do for our competitive basketball and volleyball programs.”

MICK GALE NAMED HEAD COACH OF SOCCER PROGRAMS

The University of Winnipeg is pleased to announce that Mick Gale has been named the first Head Coach of the Wesmen Soccer teams. Gale comes to the University of Winnipeg with a wealth of experience having coached in more than fifty countries in his lifetime.

Recently he spent a year as the soccer head coach at Lakeland College and also headed the Fulham Academy for male/females in the USA and helped organized the academy structure in Canada. He spent two years with the Brighton Centre of excellence as director. Mick is currently a U.E.F.A. coach, having completed the latest youth levels in 2009 in Europe and worked extensively with scouting and player development at the national and international level.

Mick was born in Surrey, England and educated in Redhill and Croydon. Prior to his college training to become a teacher, he played professionally with three clubs in a six year span (1959-1965 -Brighton, Crystal Palace and Fulham). During this time he started coaching and went on to be employed at various clubs and with community groups in England. In 1971 he accepted an offer to coach in New Zealand.

The next part of his coaching career was in Zambia as a regional coach for three successful seasons, followed by a two year stint in Tanzania. After some impressive results he moved back to England to coach with Brighton and the H.A. ladies team.  He was a founding member of the Women’s football association. His expertise was called for in a number of areas and when the opportunity arose to go back to Fulham as their first Football in the Community Officer he leapt at the chance. He instigated “outreach” programs with local ethnic minority groups and multi national schools and youth clubs. He also ran the Fulham Elite U12 U14 U16 U18 boys teams as the senior coach.
