Sonia Rossy Named Canada West Female Volleyball Rookie Of The Year
After an impressive rookie season, Sonia Rossy has been named the CW WVB Rookie of the Year..
The University of Winnipeg Wesmen and the Canada West Universities Athletic Association are pleased to announce that women's volleyball player Sonia Rossy has been named the Canada West Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Year.
Rossy, 5'11 left side player from Westwood Collegiate is a first year Arts student at the University of Winnipeg. Sonia was a starter for all 20 regular season matches for the Wesmen this past season. She compiled 176 kills, 293 defensive digs and 28 blocks during the season. Rossy, placed third in the Canada West Conference in digs with 3.71 digs per game. She finished the regular season with 10+ kills in eight matches and 10+ defensive digs in 14 matches. Rossy, recorded a season high 20 kills at Simon Fraser on January 29, 2010 (5th most in Canada West Conference) and had a season high 30 digs vs Trinity Western on January 22, 2010 (2nd most in Canada West Conference). She was named the University of Winnipeg's Female Athlete of the Month for November, 2009 and the Female Player of the Week for the week of November 2-8, 2009). She becomes the second Wesmen to receive the honour of Canada West Rookie of the Year. Marlee Bragg was the first to receive that honour in 2005-2006.
“It has been an exciting and surprising freshman season for Sonia, definitely more then we anticipated. Less then a year ago Sonia had a serious shoulder injury that did not allow her to swing in training,” said Wesmen head coach Diane Scott, adding, “As a first-year athlete she had some tough lessons along the way, but the most impressive thing is that she is a complete competitor 100%. She does not lack in the energy and fight department and as a first-year lead our team impressively on many nights”.
