BISONS EDGE WESMEN IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE
The Manitoba Bisons edged the Winnipeg Wesmen 72-69 in a thriller Thursday evening in front of over 1300 spectators at the Duckworth Centre.
Third year Bison forward Maria Pawlyshyn drained the game winning three-pointer with four seconds left in regulation time.
The victory leaves Manitoba with an 8-12 record. Winnipeg finished the regular season with an even 10-10 record.
Kayla Klassen led the Bisons with a game high 26 points, including eight-three pointers. Fifth year guard Michele Hynes finished with 13 points and nine assists. Mubo Ilelaboye had 11 and Kait Flett, also in her fifth year finished with 10 points.
Catie Gooch led the Wesmen with 21 points, incuding four-three pointers. Amy Ogidan finished with 17 and Alex MacIver added 11 points and nine rebounds.
In a wild and entertaining opening quarter, both teams matched one another basket for basket with Manitoba holding a slim 11-10 lead four minutes into the contest. Winnipeg went on to score eight unanswered points to take an 18-11 lead. The teams continued to trade baskets with Winnipeg holding a 23-19 lead after the opening quarter.
Manitoba connected for five-three pointers (three by Kayla Klassen) to help them outscore the Wesmen 20-14 in the second quarter and take a 39-37 lead into the halftime break.
The Bisons started the third quarter on a 11-0 run to take a 50-37 lead early in the quarter. The Wesmen did not back back off going on a 10-3 run to cut the Bison lead to 53-47. Maria Pawlyshyn drained a jumper at the third quarter buzzer to take a 61-54 lead into the final frame.
The Bisons had control of the game for a majority of the final frame until Winnipeg made a late charge. Winnipeg trailed 69-65 until Alex MacIver drained back to back baskets to knot the score at 69-69 with 56 seconds left setting Pawlyshyn's last second heroics.
Winnipeg will now head into the Canada West Quarterfinals in two weeks. The Wesmen will face the Simon Fraser University Clan in the opening best of three series.
WESMEN WIN, WESMEN WIN
The Winnipeg Wesmen picked up their first victory of the 2009-2010 regular season with an impressive 88-65 victory over the Manitoba Bisons in front of 1300 fans Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre.
The victory by the Wesmen comes in the teams final game of the season. Winnipeg finished the regular season with a 1-19 record. Manitoba ends their regular season with a record of 4-16.
Eric Garcia led Manitoba with 17 points. Sean Maxwell finished with 15. Dan Purvis-Collins added 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Wesmen were on fire in the opening half connecting on 18-of-31 (58%) , including seven-of-12 from three point land to build a 22-14 lead after the opening quarter and outscoring Manitoba 24-17 in the second quarter to take a 46-31 lead into the halftime break.
Winnipeg put the game out of reach in the third quarter outscoring Manitoba 29-10 to take a 75-41 lead into the final frame.
Manitoba outscored Winnipeg 24-13 in the final quarter, but the Wesmen lead was too much to overcome on this night.

WESMEN 3 Calgary 1 (13-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-18)
WESMEN BEAT SIXTH RANKED CALGARY
The Winnipeg Wesmen played one of their best matches of the season. The Wesmen defeated the number six ranked Calgary Dinos 3-1 (13-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-18) Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The victory improves the Wesmen's record to 7-12. Calgary falls below .500 with a record of 9-10.

Sonia Rossy led the Wesmen attack with a match high 16 kills and three service aces. Ariel Smith added 12 kills and 10 defensive digs. Alix Krahn and Lauren Sears each finished with 11 kills. Sears led the team with three blocks. Setter Danica Hughes had 44 assists.
Raynell Lavertu led Calgary with 13 kills, 14 defensive digs and three blocks. Laura Spence finished with nine kills. Setter Sarah Lacny finished the match with 30 assists.
Winnipeg jumped out to a 8-5 lead at the first technical of the first set only to see that lead disappear in a hurry. Calgary rattled off seven unanswered points to take a 12-8 lead and extended their lead to 16-11 at the second break. Calgary continued to dominate the opening set and eventually won the first set by a score of 25-13. Calgary had an attack percentage of .500 in the opening set.
The Wesmen regrouped in the second set holding a slim 8-6 lead at the first technical timeout before going on a 6-1 run to extend their lead to 14-7. A big kill by Sonia Rossy gave the Wesmen a 16-12 lead at the second break. Winnipeg evened the match winning the second set 25-19.
In the third set, the Wesmen carried their momentum to build leads of 8-4 and 16-12 at the technical timeouts. Calgary could only cut the Wesmen lead to as little as five points late in the set with the Wesmen winning the third set 25-19.
Winnipeg's strong play continued in set number four as the Wesmen carried the play to leads of 8-7 and 16-11 at the set breaks. Winnipeg closed out the match winning the fourth set 25-18.
The two teams will meet in the final regular season match for both teams Saturday evening at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. (CST)

DINOS BEAT WESMEN IN HEAVYWEIGHT BATTLE
The contest was a battle between two of the top five teams in the Canada West Conference. The number five ranked Calgary Dinos defeated the fourth ranked Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-17) Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The victory pushes Calgary's record to 12-5. The Wesmen have their nine match winning streak broken, sit with a record of 11-6.

with 12 kills and four blocks. Setter Ciaran McGovern finished with 39
assists and three service aces.Justin Duff led the Wesmen with 13 kills and two blocks. Andrew Town had 10 kills and a match leading 17 digs along with three service aces. Matt Schriemer also had 10 kills. Setter Dan Lother had 41 assists.
The opening set started out as a tight affair with both teams exchanging points to the first technical timeout with the Wesmen holding an 8-7 lead. Calgary took advantage of some Wesmen errors to take the lead at the second timeout 16-14. The timeout sparked the Wesmen as they closed out the opening set 11-7 to win the opening set 25-23.
The Dinos gained the advantage in the second set holding slim leads of 8-5 and 16-15 at the technical timeouts. The teams exchanged points to 24-22, in Calgary's favor when Andrew Town came up with a big time kill to close the gap to 24-23 but on the next play Graham Vigrass pounded one down the line to give Calgary a 25-23 second set win.
In the third set, the Dinos carried their momentum leading 8-6 at the first timeout and extending their lead to 16-12 at the second break. The Wesmen managed to close the gap to 17-15 late in the set but Calgary went on to outscore Winnipeg 8-3 down the stretch to win the third set 25-18.
The fourth set, once again started out a tight affair with Calgary holding on to an 8-6 lead at the first timeout and were able to take advantage of three Wesmen errors to build a 16-11 lead at the second break. The Dinos eventually closed out the match winning the set 25-17.
The two teams will wrap up their two match series on Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. (CST)

WESMEN DEFEATED BY DINOS IN THREE
The University of Calgary Dinos completed a weekend sweep against the University of Winnipeg Wesmen with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-23) victory Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Calgary won the opening match of the weekend series, Friday night by a score of 3-1.
The Dinos finish the regular season with a record of 13-5. Winnipeg completes their regular season with a record of 11-7.

Graham Vigrass led the attack for Calgary finishing with a match high 13 kills. Curtis James finished with nine kills and Oleg Podporin added eight kills and two blocks. Setter Ciaran McGovern had 31 assist and a match high 14 digs.
Justin Duff led the Wesmen with 11 kills and three blocks. Andrew Town, playing in his last regular season home match had ten kills and three blocks. Matt Schriemer added eight kills and three blocks. Setter Dan Lother had 33 assists and a team high seven digs.
Calgary held a slim 8-7 lead at the first timeout of the opening set but gained momentum to extend their lead to 16-11 at the second break. Calgary went on to win the opening set 25-17. The Dinos finished the first set with an impressive .462 hitting percentage.
Winnipeg regrouped in the second set leading 8-7 and 16-14 at the technical timeouts. Strong net play by Winnipeg's front of Justin Duff, Matt Dueck and Andrew Town led the Wesmen to a 20-16 lead late in the set. Calgary mounted a comeback led by Graham Vigrass, with three kills to give Calgary a 23-21 lead. A Calgary service error cut the Dinos lead to 23-22 . Oleg Podporin's kill set up set point at 24-22. Andrew Town smashed one down the line to cut the lead to 24-23 but Calgary got the nnext point to win the second set 25-23.
In set number three, Winnipeg jumped out to an 8-7 lead at the first timeout only to see Calgary hold the advantage at 16-15 at the second break. The teams exchanged points to 22-22, when Calgary closed out the match scoring three of the next four points to close out the third set at 25-23.

DINOS DOWN WESMEN TO END REGULAR SEASON
The University of Calgary Dinos defeated the Uniersity of Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (26-24, 25-22, 23-25, 25-23) Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The match marked the end of the regular season schedule for both teams. Calgary finishes the season with an even 10-10 record. The vastly improved Wesmen squad finish with a record of 7-13.
Lindsey Doland led Calgary with a match high 16 kills. Ali Sandholm and Laura Spence finished with 11 kills each.
