Away - Women's Basketball at Simon Fraser (Canada West Quarter Finals, Game One)

CLAN BEAT WESMEN, LEAD SERIES 1-0
The number one ranked Simon Fraser University Clan defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 87-54 in the opening game of the Canada West quarterfinals Thursday night in Burnaby, British Columbia.
The Clan lead the best of three series 1-0. Game two take place on Friday night at 8:15 p.m. CST. Game three if necessary will take place on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. CST.
Laurelle Weigl was the leading scorer for the Clan with a game high 18 points. Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe added 14 and Robyn Buna and Kate Hole each finished with 12 points.Catie Gooch led the Wesmen with 17 points. Alyssa Grant and Kaitlin Rempel each added nine points. Rempel led the Wesmen with six rebounds.
After a tight opening three minutes of the first quarter with the Clan holding a slim 6-4 lead, SFU scored 13 unanswered points to open up a 19-4 lead. Wesmen fourth year guard Catie Gooch scored five straight points to cut the lead to 19-9. The Clan closed out the opening quarter scoring five of the last seven points to lead 24-11 after the opening quarter. Catie Gooch scored nine of the Wesmen’s 11 points in the opening quarter. Laurelle Weigl added seven for the Clan.
Simon Fraser opened the second quarter on a 9-2 in a span of 2:36 to open up a 33-13 lead on the Wesmen. The Clan continued the charge for the remainder of the quarter and went into the halftime break leading 44-22. Catie Gooch scored 13 points for the Wesmen in the opening half. Winnipeg struggled in the opening half connecting on 7-of-29 (24%) from the field. Simon Fraser finished the opening half 18-of-33 (54%) from the field.
The Clan continued to keep the game out of reach in the third quarter outscoring the Wesmen 24-15 and closed out the game with a 19-17 edge in the final quarter.
Notes: Simon Fraser had a 39-28 edge in rebounds. The Clan’s bench outscored Winnipeg 44-22.

SPARTANS DEFEAT WESMEN IN OPENING MATCH
The Trinity Western University Spartans defeated the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 28-30, 25-22) in the opening match of the best of three Canada West quarterfinal series Thursday evening in Langley, British Columbia.
The Spartans lead the best of three series 1-0. Game two will be played Friday evening at 9:00 p.m. (CST). Game three if necessary will be played on Saturday night at 9:00 p.m. (CST)
Justin Duff led the Wesmen with 25 kills. Andrew Town added 19. Setter Dan Lother finished with 22 digs and Marc Ross added 12 digs.The opening set was tight from the start through the first two breaks. Winnipeg came out strong and took the early two point lead, 8-6, at the first break. The Spartans were able to rally slightly, but still trailed the Wesmen by one point, 16-15 at the second break. TW took over the set after 20. The Spartans stretched the lead to three points, 24-21 after a 4-1 run. The Wesmen got to within one point, 24-23, after a Maurice Williams block. The Spartans eventually went on to win the opening set 25-23.
The second set had the same start as the first with Winnipeg leading 8-6 at the first break. The two teams battled back and forth through to the second break, with TWU holding the one point edge 16-15. The Spartans scored three of the next four points to take a 19-16 lead. Te teams exchanged points to 21-19 when the Spartans went on a 4-1 run to win the second set 25-20.
In the third set the Spartans held a slim 8-7 lead at the first break. The two teams remained tight for the remainder of the match. Winnipeg led 16-15 at the second break. The two teams exchanged points all the way to 25-25, when Justin Duff came thru with two kills down the stretch to pace the Wesmen to a 30-28 win in the third set.
The fourth set started with the Wesmen looking like they would be forcing a fifth set as they jumped out to an early 8-5 lead at the first break, which they expanded to five points, 10-5 after an ace by Andrew Town. The Spartans regrouped scoring four of the next five points to trail 11-10. The teams exchanged points to the second technical timeout with the Spartans holding a slim 16-15 lead. The two teams matched each other point for point until TWU led 20-19. Then Winnipeg errors and TWU side outs gave the Spartans a 24-20 lead. The Spartans missed their next two chances to take the set and the match, but with a 24-22 lead the Wesmens serve went long and TWU took the opening match with a 25-22 win in the fourth set.
" We came out slow in a tough environment. We rallied and fought hard but in the end we could not overcome the errors on our side of the net", added Wesmen Head Coach Larry McKay.

WESMEN SEASON ENDS WITH LOSS TO SIMON FRASER
The Simon Fraser University Clan put an end to the Winnipeg Wesmen’s season with a 96-49 victory in game two of the best of three Canada West quarterfinal series Friday night in Burnaby, British Columbia
The Clan defeated the Wesmen 87-54 in the opening game of the series Thursday evening.
The number one ranked Clan put the game out of reach after only ten minutes of play. Simon Fraser outscored the Wesmen 26-1 in the opening frame. Winnipeg was0-for-13 shooting in the opening quarterWinnipeg found their game legs in the second quarter connecting on nine-of-15 shots from the field in an evenly played second quarter. The Clan outscored the Wesmen by a slim 23-21 margin and went into the halftime break leading 49-22.
Kate Hole scored 12 points in the opening half for SFU, who connected on17-of-31 (53%) from the field. Catie Gooch and Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with five points each in the opening half.
The Clan outscored the Wesmen 30-17 in the third quarter to take a 79-39 lead after three quarters..
Kate Hole led the Clan with 21 points. Robyn Buna added 18 points, including six three pointers. Laurelle Weigl finished with 15 points and a team high nine rebounds.
Catie Gooch led the Wesmen with 11 points. Amy Ogidan finished with seven.Jessica Stromberg had a team high six rebounds.
Notes: Wesmen fifth year players Jessica Stromberg and Randie Gibson each played their final game for the Wesmen.

WESMEN SWEEP SPARTANS, FORCE GAME THREE
The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Trinity Western University Spartans 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-23) in the second game of the best of three Canada West Conference quarterfinals Friday evening in Langley, British Columbia.
The Wesmen victory evens the best of three series at 1-1 and forces a third and deciding game on Saturday evening at 9:00 p.m. CST. The winner of the match will advance to the Canada West Final Four next weekend in Alberta.
Andrew Town led the Wesmen with 14 kills followed by Marc Ross with 10 kills. Setter Dan Lother finished with a team high nine defensive digs. Matt Schriemer finished with seven blocks.The first set was a see saw affair with both teams exchanging points throughout the set. Winnipeg led late in the set at 20-18. The teams exchanged points to 22-21 until a big block by Maurice Williams and Matt Schriemer gave Winnipeg a two point cushion at 23-21. A Spartan kill closed the gap to 23-22 but fifth year Wesmen Andrew Town pounded home back to back kills to give Winnipeg the first set win at 25-22.
Winnipeg carried the momentum into set number two leading 8-4 and 16-11 at the technical timeouts. Third year setter Emory Wells came off the bench late in the set and his strong serving led to five straight Wesmen points. Winnipeg went on to win the set 25-16.
In the third set both teams came out battling, once again matching each other point for point. Winnipeg carried the play down the stretch and finished off the match winning the third set 25-23.
" Due to our preparation, we were focused and came out strong", added Wesmen Head Coach Larry McKay.

WESMEN SEASON COMES TO END WITH LOSS TO SPARTANS
The Wesmen Men's season came to an abrupt end with a 3-0 (27-25, 25-14, 25-21) loss to the Trinity University Spartans in the third and deciding game of the Canada West Quarterfinal series Saturday night in Langley, British Columbia.
Trinity Western wins the best of three series 2-1. The Spartans advance to the Canada West Final Four starting next Friday night in Alberta.
The Wesmen started the match on a positive front jumping out to a quick 4-0 lead in the opening set. The Spartans came back scoring three straight points to cut the Wesmen lead to 4-3. First year opposite Matt Schriemer pounded a kill down the line to give Winnipeg an 8-5 lead at the first timeout. The teams exchanged points to 12-10 (Winnipeg) until Winnipeg got some breathing room leading 16-13 at the second break.The Spartans reeled off three straight points after the timeout to tie the score at 16-16 and later took their first lead of the set at 19-18. The teams exchanged points to 25-25 when Mark Howatson gave the Spartans a 26-25 lead. Trinity Western went on to win the opening set 27-25. Both teams had five service errors in the opening set.
In the second set the Spartans jumped out to a 5-1 lead and maintained their four point advantage at the timeout leading 8-4. The Spartans led by four kills by Steven Marshall opened up a 16-9 lead at the second technical timeout. Trinity Western went on to win the second set 25-14.
The third set opened up with the teams exchanging points to 4-4. The Spartans went on to score four of the next five points to take an 8-5 lead at the first technical timeout. Winnipeg, trailing 10-7 made a charge scoring three straight points (kills by Schriemer and Marc Ross, combined with a Spartan serving error) to tie the score at 10-10. The Spartans gained momentum heading into the second timeout with a 16-14 lead. Winnipeg closed the gap to two points on a few occasions down the stretch but the Spartans held on winning the third set 25-21.
Andrew Town led the Wesmen with 14 kills and two blocks. Justin Duff finished with nine kills while Matt Schriemer added eight kills. Setter Dan Lother had 35 assists to go with six defensive digs.
Notes: Fifth year Wesmen outside and team captain Andrew Town played his final match for the Wesmen.
