The Women's Basketball Team earned two wins over Saskatchewan.

WESMEN 46 Saskatchewan 62
WESMEN LOSE TO THIRD RANKED HUSKIES
The third ranked Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 62-46 Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The victory improves the Huskies record to 7-4. The Wesmen fall to .500 with a record of 6-6.
Jill Humbert and Marci Kiselyk led the Huskies with 12 points each. Kim Tulloch and Lauren Whyte added 11. Kiselyk led the Huskies with a game high 10 rebounds. Tulloch finished the game with eight assists.
Mackenzie Prasek led Winnipeg with a game high 14 points, including four three pointers. Randie Gibson finished with eight points. Alex MacIver chipped in with seven points and a team leading nine rebounds.
Both teams got off to slow starts in the opening frame, barely shooting above 20% from the field. The Huskies held a slim 6-5 lead when back to back 3’s by Prasek and Gibson extended the Wesmen lead to 11-6. Winnipeg held the advantage at 13-10 after the opening quarter.
The turning point of the contest took place in the second quarter as the Huskies went on a 13-0 run in a span of three minutes to open up ma 25-16 lead. The Huskies went into the halftime break with a 36-25 lead.
The Huskies maintained their double digit lead in the quarter until the nine minute mark Winnipeg went on a 5-3 run to cut the Saskatchewan lead to 47-39 after three quarters.
In the opening minute of the fourth quarter Winnipeg cut the lead to 47-42 on a long Randie Gibson three pointer. This was as close as Winnipeg would come with the Huskies outscoring the Wesmen 15-4 down the stretch to cap off the victory.
Notes: Winnipeg played without starting point guard Catie Gooch who sat out the contest with an injury.
Head Coach Wesmen Head Coach Tanya McKay added “losing your starting point guard and leading scorer is very hard, we are keeping our fingers crossed that she is not out for a long time”.
The two teams will conclude their weekend series Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 6:00 p.m.

WESMEN 55 Saskatchewan 71
HUSKIES DEFEAT WESMEN
The Saskatchewan Huskies opened up a weekend series in Winnipeg with a 71-55 victory over the Wesmen Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.
The victory improves the Huskies record to 6-5. The Wesmen, still seeking their first win of the regular season remain winless at 0-12.
Canada West scoring leader Showron Glover led the Huskies with a game high 29 points, including a perfect 15-for-15 from the free throw line. Nolan Brudehl added 15 points and a game high 13 rebounds. Troy Gottselig finished with 11.
Peter Lomuro led the Wesmen with 18 points. Mike James added 10, Nick Lother scored nine and had a team leading seven rebounds.
The two teams played a close and even first quarter with the Huskies clinging to a 16-15 lead after the opening ten minutes.
The Huskies took control of the game in the second quarter outscoring the Wesmen 23-14 to take a 39-29 lead into the halftime break.
In the third quarter Saskatchewan was able to extend their lead outscoring the Wesmen 21-17 to extend their lead to 60-46 after three quarters.
Saskatchewan was able to maintain their double-digit lead in the final frame outscoring the Wesmen 11-9 to make the final outcome 71-55.
The two teams will meet Saturday night to wrap up their weekend series. Game time is 8:00 p.m.

WESMEN START SECOND HALF WITH WIN OVER HUSKIES
The Winnipeg Wesmen started their second half schedule on a winning note defeating the Saskatchewan Huskies 3-1 (25-23, 27-29, 25-13, 25-22) Friday night in Saskatoon.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 4-6. Saskatchewan sits at 1-12.
Ariel Smith led the Wesmen with 14 kills. Sonia Rossy and Lauren Sears were next with 11 kills. Sears had a strong serving match with three service aces. Carleen Kruschel led in digs with 13. Leah Brezinski was the team leader in blocks with five.
Candace Hueser led the Huskies with a match high 21 kills. Ashley Schurko added eight, Shauna Weber finished with 12 digs.
The Wesmen started the first set on a positive note racing out to a lead of 8-4 at the first technical timeout but only to see the determined Huskies bounce back to take a 16-14 lead at the second break. The Wesmen made their charge late in the set trailing 20-19 and after a timeout rattled off six of the next nine points to win the opening set 25-23.
The Wesmen continued to carry the play early on in set number two leading 8-6 and 16-11 at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg fought their way to match point at 24-22, but the Huskies scored two straight points to knot the score at 24-24. The teams exchanged points to 27-27 until back to back kills by Candace Hueser led the Huskies to a 29-27 second set win.
Winnipeg recovered in a big way in the third set leading 8-2 and 16-8 at the technical timeouts and were well on their way to a third set 25-13 win.
The Wesmen came from behind in set number four trailing 8-5 and 16-12 at the set breaks before outscoring the Huskies 13-6 down the stretch to win the match closing fourth set 25-22.
"We had a great team effort tonight, our blocking was great, offense was solid and the energy was excellent. Saskatchewan battled hard and kept coming at us which forced us to stay focused and play as a team", added a pleased Wesmen Head Coach Diane Scott.

WESMEN SWEEP HUSKIES TO KICK OFF WEEKEND SERIES
The number ten ranked Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-16) in the opening match match of a weekend series in Saskatoon.
With the victory Winnipeg pulls even with a 5-5 record in the Canada West Conference standings. Saskatchewan falls to 5-6.
Fourth year middle Justin Duff finished with 15 kills in 19 attempts for an attack percentage of .789. Duff also added six blocks and two service aces. Andrew Town finished with 11 kills. Marc Ross led the Wesmen with six digs.
Jarret Christenson led the Huskies with six kills and five digs.
In the first set the Huskies led 8-7 at the first technical before the Wesmen went on a 9-2 run to lead 16-10 at the second timeout. Winnipeg continued to put the pressure on the Huskies winning the first set 25-18.
Winnipeg continued to dominate in the second set leading 8-6 and 16-9 at the timeouts in the set. The Wesmen would eventually go on to win the second set 25-19.
It was more of the same in the third set, Winnipeg held slim leads of 8-7 and 16-14, before going on a 9-2 run to close out the match winning the third set 25-16.
The two teams will close out the weekend series Saturday night in Saskatoon. Match time is 8:00 p.m.

WESMEN DOWN HUSKIES, SPLIT WEEKEND SERIES
The Winnipeg Wesmen earned a split in their weekend series against the number three ranked Saskatchewan Huskies with a 69-52 victory saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The Huskies defeated the Wesmen in the opening game Friday night by a score of 62-46.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 7-6. The Huskies stand with a record of 7-5.
Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with a game high 16 points, nine rebounds. Randie Gibson chipped in with 14 followed by fellow fifth year player Jessica Stromberg's 13 points.
Lindsay DeGroot led the Huskies with 15 points and nine rebounds. Jill Humbert added eight points.
" It was a great team effort, the kids played their hearts out and deserved the win", said a happy Wesmen Head Coach Tanya McKay.
Both teams started the opening quarter concentrating on defense as neither team allowed the other much open space for good shots from the field. Winnipeg held the lead after the opening ten minutes by a score of 14-11.
In the second quarter, both teams exchanged baskets for the opening four minutes with the Wesmen holding a 21-17 lead. Winnipeg took control of the contest going on a 16-4 run to hold a 37-21 lead at halftime.
The Wesmen atarted the third quarter on a 8-3 run to increase their lead to 45-24 and held a double digit lead for the remainder of the quarter. Winnipeg increased their lead to 54-36 after three quarters.
The Huskies could come no closer than 15 points in the final quarter as Winnipeg held their ground for the victory.
Winnipeg will travel to British Columbia for a pair of games next week starting with Simon Fraser on Friday followed by a contest against Trinity Western on Saturday.

WESMEN FALL TO HUSKIES
The Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 94-57 Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The victory improves Saskatchewan's record to 7-5. Winnipeg falls to 0-13.
Showron Glover led the Huskies with a game high 23 points, four assists and three steals. Troy Gottselig was next with 20. Michael Lieffers finished with a double-double 11 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Unsworth had 10 points.
Eric Zimmerman led the Wesmen with 19 points and three steals. Mike James finished with 13 points, six rebounds and three blocks. James Horaska led the team with three assists.
Winnipeg started out the contest on a positive note holding a 11-10 lead at the midway point of the first quarter until the Huskies went on a bit of a roll outscoring the Wesmen 14-4 in the final half of the quarter to take a 24-14 lead after the opening ten minutes.
The Huskies turned it up a notch in the second quarter outscoring the Wesmen 30-20 to take a commanding 54-34 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Both teams shot above the 45% from the field in the opening half. The Huskies drained seven three pointers compared to three for the Wesmen.
In the second half things went downhill for the Wesmen's shooting from the field. Winnipeg connected on nine-of-32 shot attempts in the second half (28%) and managed to score 23 points alone in the second half. Saskatchewan continued to find their mark, connecting on 15-of-35 shots (43%) from the field on their way to scoring 40 points in the half to run away with their second win in as many nights. The Huskies defeated the Wesmen 71-55 Friday night in the opening game of the weekend series.
Winnipeg will travel to British Columbia for a pair of games next week starting with Simon Fraser on Friday followed by a contest against Trinity Western on Saturday.

WESMEN BEAT HUSKIES IN FIVE, SWEEP WEEKEND SERIES
The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep against the Saskatchewan Huskies with a dramatic 3-2 (21-25, 25-21, 25-23, 23-25, 15-8) victory Saturday night in Saskatoon.
The victory improves the Wesmen record to 5-6. The Huskies fall to 1-13.
Winnipeg had three players with ten or more kills led by Ariel Smith's team leading 18 kills. Sonia Rossy added 13 and Lauren Sears followed with 12. Sears finished the match with seven service aces. Carllen Kruschel led the team with 20 defensive digs. Alix Krahn finished with five blocks.
Candace Hueser led the Huskies with a match high 20 kills. Shauna Weber had 24 defensive digs and Laura Beadle had two blocks.
The Huskies gained the upper hand in the opening set leading 8-5 and 16-14 at the technical timeouts before eventually winning the opening set 25-21.
A determined Wesmen team fought back in set number two leading 8-6 at the first technical and extending their lead to 16-11 at the second break. The Wesmen went on to even the match with a 25-23 second set win.
In the third set, the Huskies pulled out to an 8-4 lead and extended their lead to 12-7 when Winnipeg made a charge going on a 8-4 run to take a 16-15 lead at the second break. Winnipeg went on to win the third set 25-23.
The Huskies were desperate in set number four and pulled out to an early 5-1 lead before the Wesmen cut the deficit to 8-6 at the technical timeout. The Huskies battled hard and took a 16-15 lead at the second timeout before eventually winning the fourth set 25-23 to force a fifth set.
The two teams exchanged points to 5-5 in the fifth set until the Wesmen scored five unanswered points to take a 10-5 lead. Winnipeg went on to win the fifth set 15-8.
" Another great team effort, at times we made it tough on ourselves, but we also played tough down the stretch when the sets were tight. It was a great overall weekend, I am very pleased with the growth and guts of our team", added Wesmen Head Coach Dinae Scott.
Notes: Lauren Sears seven service aces in the match was one off from tying the Wesmen Women's Volleyball team record for most service aces in a single match.
Winnipeg will host the Trinity Western University Spartans for a pair of matches on Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre. Friday's match begins at 6:00 p.m. Saturday's match goes at 8:00 p.m.

WESMEN COMPLETE SWEEP AGAINST HUSKIES
The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep with a 3-1 (25-16, 26-28, 25-20, 25-23) victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night in Saskatoon.
The Wesmen won the opening match of the series 3-1 Friday night.
Winnipeg's record improves to 6-5. Saskatchewan falls to 5-7.
Fifth year left side Andrew Town led the Wesmen with a match high 14 kills. Fourth year middle Justin Duff added 11 kills and five blocks. Maurice Williams finished with eight kills, two service aces and a pair of blocks. Dan Lother had 40 assists and led the team with nine digs.
Alwyn Piche and Matt Busse led the Huskies with 12 kills. Geoffrey Zerr added eight kills and six blocks.
" We played good as a team and Saskatchewan is a strong team for us to match up with in our first matches of 2010", added Wesmen Head Coach Larry McKay.
Winnipeg got off on the right foot in the match winning the first set rather easily by a score of 25-16.
Saskatchewan evened the match with a tough 28-26 win in the second set.
In a tight third set, Winnipeg held slim leads of 8-7 and 16-15 at the technical timeouts before eventually pulling out a 25-20 third set win.
Winnipeg gained the advantage early on in the fourth set leading 8-5 at the first technical and playing tough to hold a 16-14 lead at the second break. Winnipeg trailed 23-22 late in the set but a pai of Huskies attacking errors gave the Wesmen the lead at 24-23 and after a Saskatchewan timeout, Andrew Town put down the match winning point kill to give the Wesmen the victory.
