Schouten Named To National Junior Team

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen in conjunction with Volleyball Canada are pleased to announce that Men’s Volleyball player Casey Schouten has been selected to the 14 member National Junior Men’s Volleyball Team.
The announcement was made earlier today following a selection camp which took place at the National Training Centre in Gatineau, Quebec from May 2-7.
A total of 12 athletes from the U21 roster will represent Canada at the FIVB World Junior Championship being held from August 22 to September 1 in Ankara and Izmir, Turkey.
Schouten recently completed his first season with the Wesmen Men’s Volleyball program. He was named to the CIS Men’s Volleyball All-Rookie Team and was selected as the University of Winnipeg’s Radisson Male Rookie of the Year.
The 6’5” opposite out of Miles MacDonell Collegiate was a starter in all 22 matches during the 2012-2013 Canada West regular season. Schouten finished second on the team in kills (220) and points (292), third in digs (140) and blocks (45) while leading the team with 20 service aces. Schouten recorded 10 plus kills in 14 regular season matches including a season high 18 kill performance against Trinity Western on November 23, 2012. The following night, Schouten had a season high 15 digs against the Spartans.
“In being selected to a National Team, Casey joins a long list of Wesmen Volleyball alumni and current players. The Wesmen logo will be worn under his Team Canada jersey at the World Championships this August”, added Wesmen Men’s Volleyball head coach Larry McKay.
The team will train in Gatineau from June 24 to July 4 and continue its training in Hamilton until July 12. The team will compete at an important international event prior the worlds, the U21 Pan Am Cup July 12-20 in Costa Rica. Training resumes in Hamilton on July 25 and the team departs for Turkey August 15.
