Nikolic, Brenton Named Athletes Of The Year

Women's Volleyball Player Ozana Nikolic And Men's Wrestler Briston Brenton Were Named The University Of Winnipeg Athletes Of The Year Earlier This Evening..

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen is pleased to announce that Women’s Volleyball player Ozana Nikolic and Men’s Wrestler Briston Brenton have been chosen as the 2012-2013 University of Winnipeg Wesmen Male and Female Athletes of the Year. The announcement was made this evening at the annual Wesmen Athletic Awards Banquet held at the Radisson Hotel.

Female Athlete of the Year - Ozana Nikolic
Second year left side was named a Second Team Canada West All-Star for her steady play during the 2012-2013 regular season. A starter in all 22 regular season matches, she led both the CIS and Canada West in kills (333) and total points (381). Nikolic recorded a Canada West match high 29 kills against UBC – Okanagan (February 2, 2013) and finished with a season high 21 defensive digs against Calgary (November 11, 2012). She finished with 20+ kills in seven regular season matches and was named the lea marc Printing Solutions Wesmen Female Athlete of the Month (November, 2012). Nikolic was also named the Wesmen Pizza Hotline Female Player of the Week on four occasions during the season.  

Male Athlete of the Year - Briston Brenton
Brenton in his fourth year of eligibility was nothing short of impressive in his first season as a member of the Wesmen Men’s Wrestling Program. Brenton was named a First Team All-Canadian and captured the gold medal in the 82 kg weight class at the 2013 CIS Wrestling Championships earlier this month. He won the gold medal at the Canada West Wrestling Championships at the end of February and finished the season with four gold medals along with one silver medal in Canada West competitions during the season. He was selected as the Most Outstanding Male Wrestler at the University of Winnipeg Invitational Tournament in February. Brenton was named the Wesmen Pizza Hotline Male Player of the Week three times during the 2012-2013 season.

Academic All-Canadians
12 student athletes were recognized as Academic All-Canadians for the 2011-2012 academic year. In order to gain this status a student athlete must finish the academic year with an overall average of 80% or better.
