The Winnipeg Wesmen will come home from the Canada West Final Four with a medal. Winnipeg defeated Fraser Valley 90-84 in the bronze medal game Saturday night in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Game Statistics

Fifth year guard Nolan Gooding led Winnipeg with 21 points and five assists. Travis Krahn scored 16 points, including four-three pointers. Jordan Clennon, starting in place of the injured Andrew Cunningham had 14 points, including four-three pointers and five assists. Steven Wesley had 12 rebounds and a team leading seven rebounds.

The Cascades were led by James York's 23 points, including four-three pointers. Kyle Grewal added 19. Klaus Figueredo led the team with nine rebounds.

Winnipeg gained the upper hand early on leading 23-18 after the opening quarter. The Cascades outscored the Wesmen by a 25-23 margin but Winnipeg held the advantage leading 46-43 at halftime.Both teams had success from three-point territory. Winnipeg and Fraser Valley each drained seven-three pointers in the opening half.

In the third quarter Winnipeg went on a 12-5 run to extend their lead to 58-48. The Cascades responded with a run of their to get back into the game. Fraser Valley went on a 15-4 run to wrestle the lead back at 63-62 with 1:28 remaining in the quarter. The teams exchanged baskets to make the score 65-64 in the Cascades favor.

The Wesmen regained the lead in the fourth quarter and found some breathing room leading 83-75 with under three minutes to play. Fraser Valley cut the deficit to to 85-82 until Jordan Clennon drained a three pointer with 53 seconds left to make the score 88-82. The Cascades scored with 26 seconds left to trail 88-84. Benny Iko iced the game sinking two free-throws to make the final score 90-84.



 

Friday, March 1

Canada West Final Four (Semi-Final)
WESMEN 59  Victoria 72

The Victoria Vikes advanced to the Canada West gold medal game after they defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 72-59 in Friday's semi final match up at War Memorial Gym in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Game Statistics

Victoria will play UBC in the gold medal game. Winnipeg will play in the bronze medal game against Fraser Valley.
Chris McLaughlin led the Vikes with a double-double consisting of 23 points and 15 rebounds. Terrell Evans added 19 while Michael Acheampong had 10.

Steven Wesley led the Wesmen with 17 points and six rebounds. Benny Iko added 10 points and five rebounds. Andrew Cunningham finished with nine points and five assists.
The game was air-tight for three quarters with both teams keeping pace with one another. Winnipeg held a slim 16-15 lead after the opening quarter. Victoria had the upper hand in the second quarter outscoring the Wesmen 18-14 to take a 33-30 lead into the halftime break.

Winnipeg was 11-of-28 from the field in the opening half, Victoria was 14-of-32. The Vikes had the advantage on the boards outrebounding the Wesmen 27-11 in the openin g half.
Steven Wesley scored five quick points in the third quarter to pull Winnipeg even at 35-35 with seven minutes remaining in the quarter. The teams exchanged points but the tide soon turned into Victoria's favour. The Vikes held a slim 42-41 lead but six unanswered points gave Victoria some breathing room at 48-41. A three pointer by Iko followed by a last second basket by Andrew Cunningham made the score 49-46 for the Vikes after three quarters.

Victoria took control of the contest in the final quarter outscoring the Wesmen 23-13 to make the final score 72-59.

The Wesmen-Cascades bronze medal game will begin at 8:00 p.m. (Wpg Time).The winner of that game is also still technically alive for CIS Final Eight consideration via the lone at-large berth available nationally.
