Brenton, Miller Win Medals On Final Day

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen will come home from the 2013 CIS Wrestling Championships with two medals, one of them gold.


Briston Brenton
won the gold medal in the 82 kg weight class defeating Jamie Yurick (Alberta) in the final match. The victory is Brenton's sixth gold medal of the 2012-2013 season.Brenton was also named to the CIS Men's Wrestling First All-Canadian Team. Winnipeg picked up a silver medal in the men's 76 kg event as Jake Miller was defeated by Matrixx Ferreiro (Brock) in the finals. Miller was named to the CIS Men's Wrestling Second All-Canadian Team.
Kyle Nguyen was aiming for bronze in the men's 130 kg class but fell short in a close match to Samson Swan (Saskatchewan),

In women's competition, Emily Kessler (55 kg) and Jessica Brenton (63 kg) were defeated in their respective 5th place matches.

" Highlighted by individual performances, we are pleased with the overall effort of the team while recognizing that we have work to do moving towards next season", added Wesmen head coach Adrian Bruce.


Winnipeg Wesmen - CIS Wrestling Championships - Day One

The opening day of the 2013 CIS Wrestling Championships was a good one for the Winnipeg Wesmen. At the end of competition at Western University in London, Ontario, Wesmen wrestlers will battle for three medals in Saturday's medal rounds.

In men's competition Canada West Men's Rookie of the Year Jake Miller finished the opening day with a perfect 3-0 record in the 76 kg weight class. Miller will wrestle in the gold-medal final on Saturday. In the 82 kg weight class Briston Brenton continued to impress finishing the day with three wins, two of them by scores of 4-0 in one round. Brenton will be competing in the gold medal final during day two of competition. Kyle Nguyen will be the third wrestler looking for a medal on Saturday. Nguyen completed the opening day of competition with a 2-1 record and will wrestle for a bronze medal tomorrow.

In women's competition Jessica Brenton finished the opening day with a record of 1-2. Brenton competes in the 63 kg weight class. In the 55 kg class Emily Kessler fell short in both of her matches, finishing the opening day with a record of 0-2. Kessler and Brenton will both compete on Saturday, both looking for a top six finish.

" Overall as a group I thought they wrestled well. We have one more day left in competition and we need to maintain our focus if we are going to continue to be successful", said Wesmen Wrestling head coach Adrian Bruce.
