The University of Winnipeg Wesmen Men's Volleyball team saw their season come to an end Friday night in Langley, BC. The Trinity Western University Spartans defeated the Wesmen 3-2 (25-22,20-25,27-25,23-25,15-4) in game two of the best of three Canada West Quarter-Final series.
Match Statistics
The Spartans defeated the Wesmen in straight sets Thursday night in the opening match of the series.
Nicholas Del Bianco led the Spartans with a match high 22 kills while adding 11 digs. Steven Marshall had 16 kills. Setter Jarrod Offereins had 57 assists. Dan Jansen Van Doorn was in on 11 blocks.
Tom Douglas-Powell led Winnipeg with 21 kills and added two service aces. Casey Schouten had 18 kills and 11 digs. Setter Josh McKay finished with 48 assists and 12 digs.
In the opening set the Spartans jumped out to an early 10-5 lead. The Spartans continued to hold the advantage at the technical timeout leading 16-10. Winnipeg made a move late in the set with the Spartans leading 19-15, the Wesmen reeled off three straight points to close the gap to 19-18. The teams exchanged points and were tied at 22-22 late in the set until the Spartans scored the final three points to take the opening set 25-22.
The Spartans raced out to a 4-0 lead early in the second set forcing Winnipeg's head coach Larry McKay to take an early timeout. Winnipeg stayed within striking and trailed 16-12 at the technical break. After the timeout Winnipeg led by the hitting power of Tomas Douglas-Powell reeled off eight straight points to open up a 20-16 lead. Winnipeg maintained the lead late in the set at 23-19 and put the set away on a pair of kills by Matthew Stubler to even the match.
Winnipeg carried their momentum into the third set jumping out to a 16-14 lead at the technical timeout. Winnipeg would eventually work to the score to 24-23 but the Spartans rallied tying the score on a service ace and following that up with a kill by Steven Marshall to lead 25-24. Tom Douglas-Powell tied the score on a kill down the line but the Spartans scored the final two points to win the third set 27-25 and a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set Winnipeg was playing to extend their season and managed to lead 16-13 at the technical break. The Wesmen maintained their three point advantage to 24-21 when flashbacks to the previous set occurred. A pair of Nicholas Del Bianco kills cut the Wesmen lead to 24-23 but Winnipeg won the next point to win the set 25-23 to force a fifth and deciding set.
The Spartans dominated the entire fifth set and closed out the match winning the set 15-4.

The Trinity Western University Spartans defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-20) in game one of the best of three Canada West Quarter-Finals series Thursday night in Langley, BC.
Match Statistics
Nicholas Del Bianco paced the Spartans with a match high 16 kills. Steven Marshall added 11 kills and two service aces. Setter Jarred Offereins finished with 45 assists.
Winnipeg was led by Tom Douglas-Powell with 13 kills and two service aces. Setter Josh McKay finished with 32 assists and a team high 12 digs. Brendan Black was in five blocks.
The Spartans opened the first set scoring five unanswered points to put the pressure on the Wesmen early on. Winnipeg went on a bit of a run soon after to close the gap to 11-7. The hometown Spartans went into the technical break leading 16-13. After the teams exchanged four point runs, Winnipeg trailed by only two at 18-16. The teams exchanged points to 23-23 but kills by Marshall and Del Bianco closd out the set in the Spartans favor 25-23.
Winnipeg opened up the second set scoring four of the first six points. The teams battled to 6-6 when the Spartans reeled five straight points to take a 11-6 lead and soon after led 16-12 at the technical break. The Spartans went on to win the second set 25-20.
The third set was a carbon copy of the previous set with the hometown Spartans leading 16-12 at the break and eventually closed out the match winning the set 25-20.
Game two of the best of three series will take place on Friday night. Match time is scheduled for 10:00 p.m. (Wpg Time).
