Basketball Wraps Up Regular Season Home Schedules

The Wesmen Basketball Teams Came Away With A Split Saturday Night Against Alberta In The Final Regular Season Home Games Of The Season..


          

Fifth year men's basketball players Nolan Gooding and Benny Iko were honoured in a special pre-game ceremony by men's basketball head coach Mike Raimbault. Both players played their final regular season home games as a Wesmen.

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep over the # 7 ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears with a dramatic 77-76 victory at the Duckworth Centre Saturday night.

Fifth year guard Nolan Gooding sank one of two free throws with the score tied at 76-76 with three seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to put the Wesmen up by one.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 13-8, the loss drops the Golden Bears to 14-6 in the tight Prairie Division standings.

Fifth year post Benny Iko, playing his final regular season home game led the Wesmen with a game high 21 points, including five-of-six from three point territory. Iko also had three blocks. Jordan Clennon added 12 points, including three-three pointers. Steven Wesley finished with 11. Andrew Cunningham dished out eight assists and Gooding led the team in rebounding with seven.

Kenneth Otieno led Alberta with 18 points and six assists. Todd Bergen - Henengouwen had his second consecutive double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Sahr Saffa also scored 14 while Adam Weir finished with 10.

Alberta jumped out to a quick 13-2 lead early on in the opening quarter and held off any charge by the Wesmen to carry a 22-13 lead after the opening quarter.

The Golden Bears continued to lead in the second quarter but Winnipeg slowly chipped away at the deficit. Iko drained a three-pointer with 2:35 remaining to pull the Wesmen to within three at 33-30. The teams exchanged baskets down the stretch with Alberta heading into the halftime break leading 37-33.

The teams each scored 16 points in the third quarter to put Alberta up 53-49 heading into the fourth quarter. Alberta maintained their lead at 59-54 with just over 7:00 left when Winnipeg made their move. Sparked by four-three pointers, Winnipeg reeled off 14 unanswered points to take a 68-59 with 4:00 remaining. The Wesmen carried a 73-67 lead in the final 30 seconds until Bergen-Henengouwen drained a three-pointer to cut the Wesmen lead to 73-70. After Cunningham's two free throws extended the Wesmen lead to 75-70, Youssef Ouahrig hit a three-pointer to cut the Wesmen lead to 75-73. Clennon went one-for-two from the free throw line to put the Wesmen lead back to three at 76-73. Kenneth Otieno tied the game at 76-76 with a three-pointer with six seconds remaining. Gooding was fouled on the next play putting him on the line for the game winning heroics.

Winnipeg will conclude their regular season schedule on Wednesday night against the University of Manitoba Bisons at the U of M. Alberta will head to Saskatoon to take on the Huskies next Friday and Saturday.

WESMEN 52  Alberta 57

The University of Alberta Pandas wrapped up a weekend series in Winnipeg with a 57-52 victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday evening.

Game Statistics

With the win the Pandas improve their record to 12-8, Winnipeg falls to 6-15 in the Prairie Division standings.

Fifth year forward Anneka Bakker led the Pandas with 12 points and nine rebounds. Megan Wickstrom added nine points, all coming from three-point territory.

Stephanie Kleysen led the Wesmen with 12 points and five steals. Megan Noonan finished with 10. Tia Coulter led Winnipeg in rebounding with eight.

Both teams struggled in the early stages of the first quarter. Winnipeg scored their first basket 2:40 into the quarter while the Pandas did not score their opening points until 3:53 was left in the frame. Wesmen post Alex Warburton scored five points, including a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Winnipeg an 11-4 lead after the opening quarter.

A 6-0 run by the Pandas in the second quarter enabled them to cut into the Wesmen lead. Kerri Kuzbyt hit a jumper as time expired to send Winnipeg into the locker room with a 22-20 lead.

The Pandas outscored Winnipeg 15-10 in the third quarter and held a 35-32 lead heading into the final frame. Winnipeg got into foul trouble in the fourth quarter as both Kleysen and Kuzbyt fouled out with less than 5:00 minutes left in regulation. Despite being without two of their scorers Winnipeg fought back to take the lead late on a Coulter basket with 1:49 left to put Winnipeg up 52-49. Alberta's Wickstrom tied the game at 52-52 with a three pointer and soon after Jessilyn Fairbanks hit a three pointer with 49 seconds left to put the Pandas up 55-52. A Wesmen turnover with 20 seconds left forced the home squad to foul and Bakker went two-for-two to ice the win for the Pandas.

Alberta will travel to Saskatoon for a weekend series against the Huskies next Friday and Saturday. Winnipeg will wrap up their season against the Manitoba Bisons at the U of M on Wednesday.

The Manitoba Pork Producers are one of the newest members of the Wesmen Corporate Family.

Women's Basketball vs Alberta

The University of Alberta Pandas erased an eight point third quarter deficit to upend the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 79-72 Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Game Statistics

Winnipeg went into the final quarter leading 55-47 but the Pandas exploded for 32 points, while holding the Wesmen to 17 in the final 10 minutes.

The Pandas with the victory improve their record to 11-8, Winnipeg falls to 6-14.

Anneka Baker led the Pandas with a game high 19 points and hauled in 13 rebounds to complete the double-double. Megan Wickstrom added 16, followed by Saskia Van Ginhoven with 15.

Winnipeg was led by first year guard Megan Noonan's 17 points, including five three pointers. Yael Kaplan finished with 16 while Lauren Anderson added 15. Stephanie Kleysen led the Wesmen on the boards with seven rebounds.

The hometown Wesmen exploded out of the gate jumping out to a 23-15 lead after the opening quarter. In the second quarter both teams scored 13 points in a tight defensive quarter. Winnipeg went into the halftime break leading 36-28.

Winnipeg connected on 14-of-28 (50%) from the field in the opening half while holding the Pandas to 10-of-35 (29%) shooting in the opening 20 minutes.

The teams played an even third quarter each scoring 19 points with Winnipeg maintaining their eight point advantage 55-47 after three quarters.

Alberta made their move in the opening 5:30 minutes outscoring the Wesmen 16-8 to tie the score at 63-63. Winnipeg was able to tie the score one more time until Alberta went on a late run to put the game out of reach.

The two teams will meet Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

Former University of Winnipeg Athletic Director Bill Wedlake presents a contribution to the Wesmen Athletic Scholarship Fund prior to the men's game on Friday night. Accepting the contribution is Wesmen Basketball players Yael Kaplan and Kristjan Lamont along with University of Winnipeg Athletic Director Doran Reid.

WESMEN 68  Alberta 55

In a tight defensive battle between two Canada West powerhouses, the University of Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the No 7 ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears 68-55 Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Game Statistics

The victory by Winnipeg snaps a four game losing streak and improves their record to 12-8. Alberta with the loss drops to 14-5 in the tight Prairie Division standings.

Travis Krahn and Andrew Cunningham led Winnipeg with 14 points each. Krahn added four-three pointers while Cunningham dished out nine assists. Mark McNee added 11 points off the bench and Nolan Gooding had a double-double 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Kenneth Otieno led Alberta with 14 points. Todd Bergen - Henengouwen had a double consisting of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Adam Weir also had a double - double, 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Both teams came into the contest averaging over 78 points per game but strong defensive play by both squads was evident early on.

Alberta led 14-11 after the opening 10 minutes and in similar fashion outscored the Wesmen 13-11 in the second quarter to carry a 27-22 lead in to the halftime break.

Winnipeg found their offensive touch in the third quarter outscoring the Golden Bears 21-10 to take a 43-37 lead in to the final quarter.The Wesmen held a slim 39-35 until Gooding and Cunningham scored a combined seven points in the final minute to give the Wesmen some breathing room heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Golden Bears cut the lead to two on three occasions in the fourth quarter but three-pointers by Krahn and Benny Iko helped the Wesmen hang on for the victory.

The Wesmen and Golden Bears will wrap up their weekend series Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Tip off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Prior to the game Wesmen fifth year players Benny Iko and Nolan Gooding will be honoured by head coach Mike Raimbault.
