Volleyball Closes Out Regular Season Home Schedule

Men's Volleyball vs UBC Okanagan
WESMEN def UBC Okanagan 3-0 (25-21,25-19,25-22)

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep over the UBC Okanagan Heat with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-22) straight sets victory Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Match Statistics

The Wesmen, entered the weekend as the No. nine ranked team in the country defeated the Heat in three straight sets Friday evening.

Winnipeg pushes their record to 10-10 while the Heat fall to 2-18 in the Canada West regular season standings.

First year opposite Casey Schouten led Winnipeg with 13 kills. Schouten had no errors in 19 attempts for a hitting percentage of .684. Tom Douglas Powell was next with seven kills. Fourth year outside Matt Stubler led the Wesmen with eight digs. Brendan Black was a force at the net finishing with six total blocks.

Jon Russo led the Heat with 12 kills followed by Greg Niemantsverdriet with 10. Leo Schober led the Heat with three blocks.

The hometown Wesmen took a 16-14 lead into the technical timeout of the opening set. The Wesmen extended their lead to 21-17 when the Heat made things interesting. UBC Okanagan reeled off four straight points to tie the score at 21-21. Winnipeg recovered scoring four straight points to take the first set 25-21.

In the second set Winnipeg gained the advantage holding a 16-12 lead at the set break. The Heat stayed with the Wesmen and closed the gap to 21-19 later in the set. Jordon Rose came off the bench for Winnipeg and right away had a kill and his strong serving, including a service ace at set point gave the Wesmen the second set by a score of 25-19.

Set number three was a carbon copy of the first two. Winnipeg took a 16-11 lead into the break. The determined Heat squad used two runs down the stretch to close the Wesmen lead to 23-22. Schouten put the match away with back-to-back kills to close out the set at 25-23.

Winnipeg will wrap up their regular season schedule next Friday and Saturday at Thompson Rivers. The Heat will host the Brandon Bobcats.

Women's Volleyball vs UBC Okanagan
UBC Okanagan def WESMEN 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-22, 26-24)

The visiting UBC Okanagan Heat defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-22, 26-24) Saturday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Match Statistics

The Heat with the win improve to 13-7 in the Canada West regular season standings. Winnipeg with the loss falls to 7-13.

UBC Okanagan came into play this weekend ranked # 9 in the CIS rankings, defeated the Wesmen in five sets Friday evening.

Alexandra Basso led the Heat with 16 kills and 15 defensive digs. Megan Festival and Katie Wuttunee each had 11. Setter Emily Oxland had 51 assists while Wuttunee led the Heat in blocks with five.

Second year left side Ozana Nikolic led the Wesmen with 29 kills, a match high in the Canada West Conference. Nikolic also led the Wesmen with 14 digs. Sarah Lynch had a strong match finishing with 10 kills and eight blocks. Setter Ellina Domnidou had 46 assists, 11 digs and two service aces.

In a back and forth opening set both teams displayed power as they took turns holding the lead at several stages. The Heat gained the upper hand holding a 16-12 advantage at the technical break. The Heat continued to lead late in the set at 20-15 when Winnipeg made their move. A 7-2 run sparked by two kills each by Nikolic and Lynch tied the score at 22-22. A kill by UBCO's Basso made it 23-22 for the Heat but after a Lynch kill tied the score at 23-23, Nikolic pounded home back to back kills to give the Wesmen a 25-23 advantage in the opening set.

The Heat had control in the second set racing out to a 16-10 lead at the break and extended the lead even more to 21-11 later in the set. The Heat eventually won the second set 25-17 to even the match.

Winnipeg once again trailed in the third set on several occasions but every time they managed to fight back. The Heat had a five point lead early on but Winnipeg closed the gap to 16-14 at the technical break. Winnipeg closed the gap to 23-22 until a kill by Kaitlynn Given followed by a Heat block gave the Heat the third set by a score of 25-22.

The Wesmen looked poised to force and fifth set leading 24-22, but the Heat stormed back scoring four straight points to close out the match winning the set by a tally of 26-24.

The Heat will play the Brandon Bobcats at home next weekend. Winnipeg will travel to Kamloops to take on Thompson Rivers.

Women's Volleyball vs UBC Okanagan 
UBC Okanagan def WESMEN 3-2 (23-25,22-25,26-24,25-19,15-6)

The No. 9 ranked UBC Okanagan Heat erased a 0-2 deficit to defeat the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-2 (23-25, 22-25, 26-24, 25-19, 15-6) in the opening match of a weekend series Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg won the opening two sets only to see the Heat storm back winning sets three and four and completing the comeback with a 15-6 win in the final set.

The Heat with the win improve to 12-7 in the Canada West regular season standings. Winnipeg with the loss falls to 7-12.

First year outside Megan Festival led the Heat with 18 kills. Festival also finished second on the team in digs with 17. Brianna Beamish added 11 kills. Fourth year left side Lenai Schmidt led the Heat with 19 digs. Setter Emily Oxland had 52 assists, three service aces and 13 digs.

Winnipeg was led by second year left side Ozana Nikolic's match high 20 kills. Sarah Lynch and Carleen Kruschel each had nine kills. Kruschel dug up a match high 20 digs. Lynch was a force at the net finishing with six blocks, including five solo. Setter Ellina Domnidou added 42 assists.

Winnipeg jumped out a 7-1 lead in the opening set and after the Heat closed the gap on several occasions went into the technical break leading 16-12. Winnipeg held off a late run by the Heat to win the opening set 25-23.

The Heat had control early on in the second set leading 16-12 at the break and extended their lead to 19-13 later on until Winnipeg fought back. Strong play at the net by Sarah Lynch lifted Winnipeg back into contention and eventually completed the set comeback winning 25-22 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set was highlighted by several runs by both teams. Winnipeg gained the early lead until the Heat responded with five straight points to take a 8-5 lead. Another run took place soon after this time by Winnipeg as they scored seven straight points to take a 14-10 lead. The final run of the set belonged to the Heat as they scored eight straight points late in the set to lift them to a 26-24 set three win.

UBC Okanagan forced a fifth and deciding set winning the fourth by a score of 25-19 and jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead in the fifth set before closing out the comeback winning the fifth set 15-6.

The teams will meet in the late match on Saturday. Match time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

The No. 9 ranked University of Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the UBC Okanagan Heat 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-23) Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Match Statistics

The hometown Wesmen won the opening two sets by identical scores of 25-19 and rallied in the third set to close out the match with a 25-23 victory.

Winnipeg with the win improves to 9-10 and currently in seventh spot in the tight Canada West Conference standings. The top seven teams qualify for the playoffs. The Heat slip to 2-17.

Tom Douglas Powell led the Wesmen with 10 kills on the night. Cameron Baydock and Casey Schouten each finished with nine. Baydock led the Wesmen in the blocking department finishing with four total blocks. Libero Riley Delavau had a match high 11 digs.

The Heat were led by Greg Niemantsverdriet's match high 11 kills. Jeremy Fostvelt had eight digs. Joshua Harvey and Bret Uniat each had a pair of blocks.

Winnipeg's offensive power was evident in the opening two sets. Winnipeg finished the first set with a hitting percentage of .370 and improved to .400 in the second set that lifted them to a pair of 25-19 set victories and a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Heat settled down in the early stages of the third set and were up 16-11 at the technical timeout. Winnipeg regrouped scoring seven of the next eight points to take a 18-17 lead. The teams battled down the final stretch and were tied on two occasions until Matt Stubler had a pair of kills and Casey Schouten pounded home the 25th point of the third set to give the Wesmen a 25-23 win in the final set of the match.

The Heat and Wesmen will play in the early match on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m.
