WESMEN BEAT THIRD RANKED ALBERTA
WESMEN def Alberta 3-1 (30-28, 16-25, 26-24, 26-24)
The Winnipeg Wesmen picked up their first win of the regular season beating the number three ranked and undefeated Alberta Pandas 3-1 (30-28, 16-25, 26-24, 26-24) Friday night in Edmonton.
First year left side Sonia Rossy had the best match of her rookie season, led the Wesmen with 17 kills, 20 digs, three blocks and two service aces. Middle blocker Lauren Sears had 10 kills, six blocks and three service aces. Alix Krahn had nine kills and five blocks.
In the opening set Winnipeg jumped out to leads of 8-5 and 16-10 at the technical timeouts. Alberta battled back evening out the score on several occassions during the set. Winnipeg eventually won the first set 30-28.
In the second set the Pandas built leads of 8-7 and 16-13 on their way to evening the match with a 25-16 set win.
Alberta looked to go ahead in the third set leading 8-4 and 16-15 at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg mounted a comeback late in the set and after four straight attacking errors by Alberta won the third set 26-24.
The Pandas carried the play early on in set number four leading 8-4 at the first timeout and 16-13 at the second. Once again the Wesmen machine came back late in the set and staved off a match point at 24-23 when Lauren Sears tied the set at 24-24 setting up Sonia Rossy's back-to-back kills to win the set and close out the match.
Winnipeg (1-3) will head home to face the Manitoba Bisons Friday night at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is 6:00 p.m.
