Wesmen Have Success At Home Tournament

The Winnipeg Wesmen Won Seven Individual Medals On The Varsity Side And Two More In Club Competition At The 2013 Wesmen Invitational..






Saturday, February 2, 2013 - The Wesmen Invitational Wrestling Tournament took place at the Duckworth Centre. The event featured some of the best male and female wrestlers from Calgary, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Regina and the host Winnipeg.

It was a very successful tournament for the host University of Winnipeg Wesmen. In total the Wesmen captured seven medals (two gold, two silver and three bronze) in varsity competition and two bronze medals in club events.

In the team standings, the men's varsity team placed second, the women's varsity team finished in fourth. The Wesmen club teams finished second in men's competition and third on the women's side.

Men's Varsity

The Wesmen Men's team captured five medals (two gold, 1 silver and two bronze). Highlighting the success was gold medal wins by Briston Brenton (82 kg) and Jake Miller (76 kg).  For Brenton it is his third gold medal in the past three events and fourth of the season. Miller also won gold at the Saskatchewan Huskies Open back in November. Cean Bod-Oy captured a silver medal in the (54 kg) weight class and Mohktar Hakimi and Kyle Nguyen won bronze medals in the 57 kg and 130 kg weight class respectively. Brenton was named the Most Outstanding Male Wrestler of the tournament.

Women's Varsity
The Women's Varsity team won a pair of medals (1 silver and 1 bronze). Maura Martina won the silver medal in the 82 kg weight class. For Martina it is her third medal of the season. Jessica Brenton won her second bronze medal of the season in the 63 kg class.

The Wesmen will now prepare for the Canada West Wrestling Championships on Feb 15-16 at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
