Women's Volleyball at Alberta
WESMEN def Alberta 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-19)
Second year left side Ozana Nikolic had a match high 22 kills to help the Winnipeg Wesmen pick up a 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-19) upset victory over the No. 3 ranked Alberta Pandas Saturday night in Edmonton.
Match Statistics
Nikolic was on top of her game committing only two errors and finishing the match with a hitting percentage of .426. She also had nine digs and a pair of blocks.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 7-11. Alberta with the loss falls to 13-5.
Wesmen captain Carleen Kruschel had 10 kills, a match high 14 digs and three blocks. Middle blocker Sarah Lynch was solid at the net with eight blocks. Setter Ellina Domnidou had 43 assists and 10 digs.
Jaki Ellis led the Pandas with 14 kills. Jessie Niles was the team leader in digs with 12. Dioe Lang and Krista Zubick had five blocks.
In the opening set, Winnipeg held a 16-15 lead at the technical timeout but soon after the hometown Pandas turned the tide their way. A Nikolic kill gave Winnipeg a 17-16 lead but Alberta went on to score six straight points to jump out to a 22-17 lead and would soon after win the opening set 25-19. Nikolic had six kills in the opening set.
Winnipeg regrouped in the second set and took advantage of several Alberta errors, both at the service line and at the net. The Wesmen jumped out to a 10-5 lead and continued to hold the lead throughout the set taking set number two by a score of 25-20. Alberta committed four service errors and seven attacking errors in the set.
The two teams were dead even in the early stages of the third set. The score was tied at 8-8 when Winnipeg scored six unanswered points to build a 14-8 lead. The Wesmen led 16-10 at the technical break and went on to outscore Alberta 9-5 down the stretch to win the set 25-15.
The Wesmen closed out the match in style building a 16-9 lead in the fourth set and eventually went on to win the set 25-19 to complete the upset.
"I am so pleased with our team effort tonight, once again our strength of character showed. To come back with a disciplined match against a very good team in Alberta and see it through for the win was great", said Wesmen head coach Diane Scott.
Winnipeg will close out their regular season home schedule next Friday and Saturday against the UBC Okanagan Heat at the Duckworth Centre.
Men's Volleyball at Alberta
Alberta def WESMEN 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-15)
The No. 1 ranked Alberta Golden Bears defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-15) in the late match Saturday night in Edmonton.
Match Statistics
Alberta with the win remains undefeated sporting a record of 18-0. Winnipeg with the loss drops to 8-10.
Jay Olmstead led the Golden Bears with nine kills. Erik Matton finished with eight digs and Tristan Aubry led Alberta in blocks with six.
Tom Douglas-Powell led Winnipeg with six kills. Libero Riley Delavau had a match high 10 digs. Brendan Black, Casey Schouten and Josh McKay each finished with three blocks.
Winnipeg had their only lead of the match at 4-2 in the opening set. Alberta regrouped to take a 16-9 lead at the technical break and went on to win the opening set 25-16.
The second set was a carbon copy of the opening set as the Golden Bears gained control leading 16-10 at the break. Alberta took a 2-0 lead in the match winning the set 25-17.
The Pandas closed out the match in the third set, taking the set by a margin of 25-15.
Winnipeg will head home to prepare for their final regular season home matches against the UBC Okanagan Heat next Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.

Alberta def WESMEN 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-21)
Fifth-year right-side hitter Mitch Irvine had a match high 12 kills to pace the No.1 ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears to a straight sets 3-0 (25-21, 25-14 and 25-21) victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Friday night in Edmonton.

With the win Alberta improves their record to 17-0 on the season, and moves within one point of clinching first place overall in the Canada West regular season standings.
The Wesmen with the loss drops to 8-9 on the season but still remain in the hunt for a playoff berth.Winnipeg remains in the seventh spot in the standings, just two points ahead of the Mount Royal Cougars (7-10) for the final spot.
Winnipeg was led offensively by Brendan Black and Tom Douglas-Powell who each recorded seven kills. Black, a third-year middle connected on .500 on his swings, while also picking up an ace and four block assists. Setter Josh McKay finished with 23 assists, three kills, two digs and one solo block.
Alberta received 10 kills from fourth-year LS Jay Olmstead, as well as seven kills and a spectacular .667 hitting percentage from middle Tristan Aubry. Fellow middle Matt McCreary had six kills, as well as a combined eight blocks.
"Alberta was ahead of us this evening. We have all aspects to improve on" added Wesmen head coach Larry McKay.
The two teams will meet in the evening's late match on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)

The No. 3 ranked University of Alberta Pandas defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-20) Friday night at the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton.
Match Statistics
The Pandas with the win improve their Canada West regular season record to 13-4. Winnipeg sits at 6-11 following the loss.
Krista Zubick finished with 14 kills on the night, the match high, and also racked up a .387 hitting percentage. She also had 12 digs, which was just two off the match high. Teammates Lia Stang and Jaki Ellis each earned six kills on the night, while Ellis also had three service aces. Freshman Kacey Otto had five kills, two aces and nine digs for the Pandas.
The Wesmen were led by second year left-side Ozana Nikolic who pounded 12 kills past Alberta defenders. Nikolic currently leads the Canada West Conference in kills, is fifth in digs and first in overall individual points. She also had two aces and nine digs in the loss. Middle Sarah Lynch had five kills, a .364 hitting percentage as well as four digs.
After struggling with consistency in the first two sets, the Wesmen played their best volleyball when it was too late, as they trailed Alberta 2-0 in the set count, and found themselves in an early 6-0 hole to start the third. Although they did claw back to within two points, they could never get any closer as Alberta was able to hold off the Wesmen comeback attempt for the straight sets win.
