Wesmen Fall Short Against Dinos

The Wesmen Basketball Teams Fell Short In A Pair Of Games Against The University of Calgary Dinos On Friday Night At The Duckworth Centre.

Women's Basketball vs Calgary
WESMEN 53  Calgary 74

A lightning fast start lifted the No 10 ranked Calgary Dinos to a convincing 74-53 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Game Statistics

The victory improves the Dinos record to 14-2 and in sole possession of first place in the Prairie Division. Winnipeg with the loss drops to 5-12.

Calgary outscored the Wesmen 28-10 in the opening ten minutes and continued to put the pressure on the Wesmen, scoring 24 points in the second quarter to open up a 52-22 lead at halftime.

Winnipeg outscored the Dinos 18-9 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 60-40 after three quarters. The teams both put up 13 points in the fourth to make the final tally 74-53.

The Wesmen were guilty of 16 turnovers in the opening half which in turn resulted in 21 points for Calgary.

Dinos guard Kristie Sheils led all scorers with 16 points, including four-three pointers. Alex Cole finished with 13 while Jessica Franz had 12 points and seven rebounds.

Stephanie Kleysen led the Wesmen with 11 points and seven rebounds. Yael Kaplan added 10 points.

Calgary will be at home next week hosting the University of Regina Cougars. Winnipeg will travel to Saskatoon to take on the Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday and Saturday.

WESMEN 71  Calgary 79

The University of Calgary Dinos completed a weekend sweep with a 79-71 victory over the Winnpeg Wesmen Friday evening in Winnipeg.

Game Statistics

Calgary won the opening game of the series Thursday night with a 93-86 overtime thriller.

The victory pushes Calgary's record to 9-7. Winnipeg with the loss sits at 11-6.

Fourth year forward Thijin Moses led the Dinos with a game high 27 points, including five-three pointers. Moses led all players in rebounds with 14. Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson added 19 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Matt Letkeman and Youri Anissovets finished with 11 each.

Travis Krahn led the Wesmen with 20 points, including six-three pointers. Steven Wesley and Dominique Brown each added 14 points. Benny Iko led Winnipeg on the boards with 12 rebounds. Guard Andrew Cunningham had 10 assists and five steals.

Calgary jumped out to a quick start leading 16-6 early in the opening quarter. Winnipeg fought back scoring six straight points to close out the quarter to cut the Dinos lead to 16-12.

Andrew Cunningham and Travis Krahn scored baskets in the opening minute of the second quarter to tie the score at 16-16. The teams exchanged leads until the Dinos scored five points in the closing moments to carry a 34-27 lead into the halftime break.

The Dinos extended their lead to double digits on seven occasions in the third quarter with the largest margin being 52-40 with under 30 seconds left in the third quarter. Calgary carried a 52-42 lead into the final frame.

Calgary continued to hold the lead in the fourth quarter but Winnipeg made a charge late closing the gap to 66-60 with just over 3:00 to play but an 8-0 run, with five points coming from Ogungbemi-Jackson put the game out of reach.

Calgary will return home to face the Regina Cougars next weekend. Winnipeg will take on the Saskatchewan Huskies on the road in Saskatoon next Friday and Saturday.

Women's Basketball vs Calgary
WESMEN 55  Calgary 65 

The University of Calgary Dinos started slowly but a strong second half lifted the team to a 65-55 victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Thursday evening in Winnipeg.

Game Statistics

The hometown Wesmen were up 14-9 after the opening quarter and extended their lead to 34-27 heading into the halftime break. The Dinos dominated the second half outscoring the Wesmen 38-21 in the final 20 minutes.

Calgary with the win improves to 13-2. Winnipeg suffers their fifth loss in a row and drops to 5-11 in the Prairie Division.

Jessica Franz led Calgary with 19 points and five assists. Alex Cole added 10 points and a team high nine rebounds.

Winnipeg was led by Tia Coulter's 18 points. Lauren Anderson finished with 12. Stephanie Kleysen hauled down a game high 12 rebounds and dished out five assists.

After the halftime break the Dinos went on a 7-1 run early in the third quarter to tie the score at 35-35. Winnipeg was unable to keep up with Calgary as the Dinos took control of the game outscoring the Wesmen 22-5 in the third quarter to carry a 39-29 lead into the final frame. Winnipeg kept pace with the Dinos in the final ten minutes as both teams scored 16 points to make the final tally 65-55.

The two teams will meet on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre. The game will be the sixth annual "Shoot for the Cure" fundraiser in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
 

Men's Basketball vs Calgary
WESMEN 86  Calgary 93 (Overtime) 

The University of Calgary Dinos picked up a dramatic 93-86 overtime victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Thursday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Game Statistics

The two teams were tied 82-82 after regulation time. Calgary outscored Winnipeg 11-4 in the extra frame to improve their regular season record to 8-7. Winnipeg with the loss falls to 11-5.

Winnipeg native Jarred Ogungbemi - Jackson led the Dinos with 24 points and completed the double-double hauling down 10 rebounds. Thijin Moses finished with a double-double of his own scoring 20 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Josh Owen - Thomas had 17 points and Dallas Karch added 14.

Steven Wesley led the Wesmen with a double-double consisting of 30 points and 12 rebounds. Fifth year forward Benny Iko added 15 points and a game high 14 rebounds. Andrew Cunningham dished out 12 assists while scoring 11 points. Samuel Hattin came off the bench to score 10.

Calgary started the high paced opening quarter on a good note outscoring the Wesmen 10-2 in the early stages. Winnipeg fought back to tie the score at 12-12 with 3:37 remaining to play in the quarter. The Dinos pushed ahead in the final minute to lead 23-19 after the opening frame.

Winnipeg carried the play and managed to take the lead back in the second quarter until some late period heroics by Calgary. A three point play by Ogungbemi-Jackson with 13 seconds left tied the score at 38-38 heading into the halftime break. Winnipeg struggled from the perimeter in the opening half connecting on 3-of-16 from three-point territory.

The Dinos came out of the halftime break on fire going on a 10-2 run to open up a 48-40 lead with just over 5:00 to play. Winnipeg once again came back and managed to tie the score at 55-55 on a Steven Wesley three-pointer with 1:40 left in the third. Benny Iko nailed a three-pointer with 30 seconds to play to give the Wesmen a 59-55 lead after three.

In the fourth quarter the teams battled which set up a dramatic final minute. Winnipeg held a 77-73 after a pair of three's by Iko but Calgary answered back on a three pointer by Josh Owen-Thomas with over 1:00 minute left to trail 77-76. After a Winnipeg miss, Ogungbemi-Jackson drained a three with 31 seconds left in regulation to give Calgary a 79-77 lead. A trio of free-throws extended the lead to 82-77 with 18 seconds remaining setting up the dramatics. Winnipeg's Travis Krahn went two-for-three from the free throw line to cut the Calgary lead to 82-79. After a Calgary timeout, Benny Iko came up with a steal and was fouled on a three-point attempt with five seconds left in regulation. Iko calmly sank all three foul shots to tie the score at 82-82 forcing the extra frame.

The teams will wrap up their two game series Friday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 8:00 p.m.
