Men's Volleyball vs Saskatchewan
WESMEN def Saskatchewan 3-1 (27-25, 25-17, 21-25, 26-24)
The No 10 ranked Winnipeg Wesmen gained a split in their two match series against the No. 8 ranked Saskatchewan Huskies with a 3-1 (27-25, 25-17, 21-25, 26-24) victory Saturday night in Winnipeg.
Match Statistics
The Huskies won the opening match of the weekend series Friday night in five sets.
Winnipeg improves their record with the win to 8-8. The Huskies fall to 10-6.
In the opening set the Huskies gained the advantage early on jumping out to a 16-11 lead at the technical timeout. Winnipeg settled down and managed to tie the score at 20-20 late in the set. The teams exchanged points to 25-25 when Kenny McKenzie had a kill to give Winnipeg set point and on the next play McKenzie put up the wall to give the Wesmen a 27-25 win in the opening set.
In the second set both teams came out battling to an even score of 8-8 until Winnipeg seized control. The Wesmen outscored the Huskies 8-4 to take a 16-12 lead at the technical timeout. Winnipeg extended their lead to 22-14 late in the set and eventually went on to win the set 25-17. Winnipeg's outside hitters Tom Douglas Powell and Casey Schouten had six and four kills respectively in the set for the Wesmen.
The Huskies relied on strong net play in the third set to get back into the match. Saskatchewan had five blocks in the set and got timely kills from the duo of Bryan Fraser and Matthew Busse to win the set 25-21.
The fourth set was a tight affair all throughout and as the trend has been all weekend extra points was needed. The teams battled to 24-24 until back to back kills by McKenzie and Douglas Powell gave the Wesmen a 26-24 set victory to close out the match.
" We matched up with a veteran top Canada West team and coach this weekend. We were fortunate to be a little better than them tonight", added Wesmen head coach Larry McKay.
Tom Douglas Powell led the Wesmen with a match high 17 kills. Casey Schouten added 12 kills. Kenny McKenzie had eight kills and was solid at the net finishing with four blocks. Setter Josh McKay had 42 assists to go with his team leading 10 digs.
Paul Thomson led the Huskies with 14 kills. Matthew Busse added 12 kills and four blocks. Bryan Fraser finished with eight kills. Jeffrey Grant led the Huskies with 13 digs.
Winnipeg will be on the road next week in Edmonton to face the Alberta Golden Bears. Saskatchewan will be home to face the Brandon Bobcats.
Women's Volleyball vs Saskatchewan
WESMEN def Saskatchewan 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-11)
The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a home court weekend sweep over the Saskatchewan Huskies with a straight sets 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-11) at the Duckworth Centre Saturday night.
Match Statistics
Winnipeg (6-10) on the season beat the Huskies (3-13) in straight sets in Friday night's opening match.
The Wesmen started strong in the opening set scoring six of the first eight points to gain the early advantage. The Wesmen continued to put pressure on the Huskies jumping out to a 16-13 lead at the technical timeout. Winnipeg led by Ozan Nikolic's six kills in the opening set went on to win the set 25-19.
In set number two, Winnipeg jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead and once again never trailed as they built a 16-10 lead at the technical timeout. Tia Boroski came off the bench in the late part of the set and was on the service line for five straight points to extend Winnipeg's lead to 23-16. Winnipeg went on to win the second set by a tally of 25-18.
The Huskies grabbed their first lead of the match in the third set leading 6-3 early on. Winnipeg stormed back to take a commanding 16-8 lead at the technical timeout and went on to close out the match in convincing style winning the third set 25-11.
"It was a team effort all weekend with solid performances from everyone both nights. It is so great to see the team so happy while competing, the essence of sport. Victory being the reward", said Wesmen head coach Diane Scott.
Ozana Nikolic led the Wesmen with a match high 15 kills and finished with a hitting percentage of .346.Nikolic led the team in digs with 13. Carleen Kruschel added nine kills. Sarah Lynch was strong at the net finishing with four blocks. Setter Ellina Domnidou had 34 assists and four blocks.
Candace Hueser led the Huskies with 12 kills. Haley Williams had a match high 17 digs. Jina Barker had 24 assists.
Winnipeg will travel to Edmonton next week to face the Alberta Pandas. Saskatchewan will be at home against Brandon.

Women's Volleyball vs Saskatchewan
WESMEN def Saskatchewan 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-14)
The hometown University of Winnipeg Wesmen picked up their first victory of the new year with a convincing 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-14) victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg improves their record to 5-10, Saskatchewan falls to 3-12 in the Canada West Conference standings.
Ozana Nikolic led the Wesmen with a match high 16 kills and 16 defensive digs. Alicia Perry was next with seven. Team captain Carleen Kruschel had six kills and 13 defensive digs. Setter Ellina Domnidou had 32 assists.
The Huskies were led by Kayla Tycholiz and Candace Hueser each finishing with six kills. Caremen Dubnick led the Huskies in digs with 11.
The first half of the opening set was an even back and forth affair with the widest lead margin being three points (7-4 Huskies). The Huskies led 16-13 at the technical timeout when Winnipeg came back. After the Huskies made it 17-13 coming out of the break, Winnipeg reeled off four straight points to tie the score at 17-17. The teams continued to exchange points until Winnipeg made it 24-22 and closed out the set with a kill by Alicia Perry on the next play.
Winnipeg had control in the second set leading 17-12 but the Huskies fought back. Saskatchewan scored five straight points to knot the score at 17-17. Once again the teams exchanged points to 23-23 when Winnipeg went in for the kill. A Huskies attacking error set up set point and on the following play Carleen Kruschel put up a block to win the set 25-23.
The Wesmen dominated the third set racing out to a 16-9 lead at the technical break and went on to win the third set by a scre of 25-14.
"We played a really complete match tonight, getting stronger with each set. It was a nice win for the home town crowd", added Wesmen head coach Diane Scott.
The two teams will play in the late match on Saturday night. Start time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The No. 8 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies came back from a 0-2 deficit to defeat the No. 10 ranked University of Winnipeg Wesmen 3-2 (18-25, 24-26, 25-18, 29-27, 15-11) in the late match Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Match Statistics
The victory extends the Huskies win streak to seven in conference play and improves their record to 10-5. Winnipeg drops below the .500 mark with a record of 7-8.
Winnipeg opened the contest on a positive note jumping out to a quick 16-11 lead at the technical break of the opening set. The Wesmen continued their strong play for the remainder of the set, eventually winning 25-18. Winnipeg had a total hitting percentage of .615 in the first set, committing only one error.
The hometown Wesmen with momentum on their side won an evenly played second set 26-24 and had control of the match at that time leading 2-0. The Huskies found their game in the third set and jumped out to a quick 16-10 lead at the technical timeout. After a Winnipeg timeout with the Huskies leading 19-11, Winnipeg reeled off five straight points to cut the Saskatchewan lead to 19-16. Winnipeg was unable to close the gap as the Huskies went on to win the third set by a margin of 25-18.
The two Canada West rivals had a battle in the fourth set. The teams exchanged points all the way to 27-27 but the Huskies scored the final two points on a Jordan Nowakowski kill followed by a Winnipeg attacking error to win an eventful fourth set 29-27, setting up a fifth and final set.
In the final set, the teams were deadlocked at 8-8 when the Huskies took control of the set scoring five straight points to lead 13-8. Winnipeg scored two points on a Cameron Baydock kill followed by a block by Matthew Stubler to close the gap to 13-10. Jordan Nowakowski scored two of the final three points to give the Huskies a 15-11 advantage in the final set to complete the comeback.

Paul Thomson led Saskatchewan with a match high 17 kills. Bryan Fraser added 12 kills and 10 digs. Braden McLean had 10 kills and three blocks. Setter Chris Gilbert finished with 50 assists.
The Wesmen were led by Tom Douglas-Powell's 15 kills. Casey Schouten added 11 kills. Libero Riley Delavau had 13 digs to lead the team. Brendan Black led the Wesmen in blocks with four. Setter Josh McKay had 47 assists and three blocks.
The two teams will wrap up their weekend series Saturday night the first match of the night at 6:00 p.m.
