Women's Basketball at Mount Royal
WESMEN 67 Mount Royal 73
The Mount Royal University Cougars defeated the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen 73-67 Satrurday night in Calgary Alberta.
Game Statistics
The win improves the Cougars to 5-9 while Winnipeg drops their fourth straight falling to 5-10.
The Cougars were led by third-year guard Danica Rybachuk's 16 points. Winnipeg's Lauren Anderson led all scorers with a game-high 21. Stephanie Kleysen had 16 points and six rebounds.
Jumping out to a 14-11 lead mid-way through the first, the Wesmen would go on a 10-0 surge, led by Anderson who was 4-for-4 in the quarter to take a 24-11 lead. Hilary Annich would cut the lead to 10, connecting on a deep three to close out the first with the Wesmen leading 24-14.
Both teams would trade barbs in the second, as Rybachuk was hot, connecting on a pair from downtown, but the Wesmen would keep pace, maintaining their 10 point lead into halftime leading 39-29.
The Cougars came out on fire in the third quarter as the Cougars drained back to back three pointers to cut the lead to just four. A 10-2 run would see the Cougars trail by two, until Carrie Campbell`s field goal with 6:12 would tie the game at 41-41. The Cougars would outscore the Wesmen 27-12 in the third quarter to lead 56-51 heading into the final frame.
The Cougars held a 64-54 in the fourth quarter when the Wesmen would launch a mini-comeback of their own, putting together a 7-0 run to trail by three points with five minutes remaining. The Cougars scored five points down the stretch to preserve the 73-67 victory.
Winnipeg will return home to play the Calgary Dinos on Thursday and Friday at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN 75 Mount Royal 71
The Winnipeg Wesmen mounted a furious fourth quarter comeback on Saturday night, outscoring the host Mount Royal University Cougars 35-11 over the final 10 minutes to beat the Mount Royal University Cougars 75-71 Saturday evening in Calgary.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 11-4, the Cougars fall to 3-11.
Benny Iko led the Wesmen with a double-double 16 points and 15 rebounds. Travis Krahn added 15 while Andrew Cunningham and Steven Wesley each finished with 12 points.
Olawafemi Ogun led the Cougars with 18 points. Nick Loewen had 14. Deng Awak led the Cougars with 13 rebounds.
After giving up the games first basket, the Cougars would go on an 11-0 run in the opening four minutes, led by Nick Loewen with five points. Andrew Cunningham would cut into the lead for the visitors, finishing with two layups in the final minute of the quarter, as the Cougars led by ten 24-14.
The Wesmen would chip away at the Cougars lead in the second, cutting the margin to single digits as Mount Royal took a seven point advantage into half-time 38-31.
Led by Olawfemi Ogun’s 10 points in the third quarter, the Cougars looked ready to run away with the game as they outscored the Wesmen 22-9 in the frame, taking a 20 point lead in the fourth quarter – but that’s when things got interesting.
Opening the fourth with a Jordan Clennon bucket, the Wesmen would start to find their offensive touch. Sparked by a 17-2 run the Wesmen would cut the deficit to just five points with 4:30 remaining as the Cougars led 62-57.
The lead would continue to shrink late in the game, as the Cougars held a three point advantage with just over two minutes left. Travis Krahn would drop a deep three ball followed by Clennon on consecutive offensive possessions as the Wesmen took their first lead since the opening 30 seconds 69-68.Tied at 71 apiece, Cunningham would cut in the paint for two, giving his team a two point edge with 30 seconds remaining. Awet Abraha would get a golden opportunity, slashing through the lane, but the layup would hang in the cylinder and roll out, effectively ending the Cougars hopes. A pair of late free-throws would seal the Wesmen comeback as they stormed back in the fourth, outscoring the cougars by 24 points in the final quarter to win 75-71.
Winnipeg will next see action on Thursday and Friday on home court against the Calgary Dinos.

WESMEN 76 UNBC 79
A late three pointer by UNBC lifted the Timberwolves to a 79-76 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Thursday evening in Prince George, British Columbia.

Jennifer Bruce drained the shot from three-point territory with 21 seconds left in regulation time with the score tied at 76-76. Winnipeg had a chance to tie the score but Yael Kaplan's three point shot attempt fell short.
The Timberwolves with the win improve to 5-8. Winnipeg's record drops to 5-9.
The game opened with an 8-0 Wesmen run, forcing 3 straight turnovers from the Timberwolves, it was Timberwolves guard Mercedes VanKoughnett who came back to answer with two consecutive three-pointers. The Wesmen managed to outscore the Timberwolves 21-17 in the first quarter while forcing 11 turnovers.
Winnipeg kept the pressure on the Timberwolves in the second quarter outscoring the home side 22-19 to carry a 43-36 lead into the halftime break. First year post Lauren Anderson scored 12 points in the opening half while Tia Coulter added nine.
UNBC opened the third quarter on a 10-4 run to cut the Wesmen lead to 47-46. Later in the quarter the Timberwolves went in front 54-51 but the Wesmen fought back closing out the quarter on a 10-4 run to carry a 61-58 lead after three quarters.
The fourth quarter saw the score tied five times with three different lead changes. UNBC drained three-three pointers to propel them to a 76-71 lead into the final minute until Winnipeg fought back.Yael Kaplan hit a deep two to cut the T-Wolves lead to three at 76-73. Stephanie Kleysen came down the floor with 34 seconds left to hit a three and tie the game at 76-76.
Lauren Anderson finished as the top scorer for the Wesmen with 12 points, while Yael Kaplan and Megan Noonan added 11 each.
Jennifer Bruce top the scoring with 20 points, 18 of which were from behind the arc. Mercedes VanKoughnett and Sarah Robin added 11 and 12 respectively.
Winnipeg will head to Calgary for Saturday evenings matchup against the Mount Royal Cougars. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)

WESMEN 91 UNBC 83
Fifth year forward Benny Iko scored a game high 26 points to lead the Winnipeg Wesmen to a 91-83 road victory over the UNBC Timberwolves Thursday evening in Prince George, BC.

Winnipeg with the win improves to 10-4 and currently tied with Alberta (10-2) for first place in the Prarie Division. The Timberwolves fall to 5-8 with the loss.
Iko was on fire from outside draining six-three pointers and was solid on the glass grabbing a team high six rebounds.
Winnipeg also got strong games from the rest of the starters. Guard Travis Krahn added 19 points, with four-three pointers. Andrew Cunningham was solid with 17 points, nine assists and three steals. Steven Wesley added 15 points.
Charles Barton led UNBC with 17 points. Sam Raphael added 15 and Francis Rowe had 13. Gabe Aubertin pulled down a game high 10 rebounds.
At the end of the first the Timberwolves lead the Wesmen 25-22, but by the halftime the Wesmen had managed to squeeze ahead by one with a 45-44 score after 20 minutes.
A battle of outside shooting kept the fans on the edge of their seats in the third quarter, but the Wesmen worked the floor, enabling them to find gaps in the Timberwolves defense. At the end of the third, Timberwolves forward Charles Barton drained a buzzer beater to tie the game at 68-68.
Iko put the game away in the late stages of the fourth quarter when relentless pressure and scoring put the Wesmen up 10 with three minutes to play. Winnipeg stepped up their defensive play in the final 2:30, forcing the Timberwolves to go scoreless to make the final 91-83 in Winnipeg's advantage.
The Wesmen will wrap up their road trip on Saturday night in Calgary against the Mount Royal Cougars. Game time is 8:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)
