Saturday, January 12 - Men's and Women's Volleyball at UBC

UBC def WESMEN 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-16)

The No. 1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds put on another dominant performance on Saturday to extend their win streak to 12 games, downing the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-16) in Vancouver.

Match Statistics

UBC improves their regular season record to 13-1. Winnipeg falls to 4-10 in the Canada West Conference standings.

Shanice Marcelle led UBC with seven kills. Lisa Barclay added five kills and four aces.Setter Derksen-Bergen also had four aces and 21 assists on the night.

Ozana Nikolic was held in check in the contest finishing with four kills to lead the Wesmen in that department. Nikolic also led the Wesmen in digs with 14.

The Wesmen had no answer for UBC’s serving game on Saturday. The ‘Birds racked up 12 aces compared to three for Winnipeg, keeping the visitors out of system and unable to find a rhythm offensively. Barclay had the first big serving run to help UBC pull away in a tight first set. The ‘Birds scored six straight points on her serve to go up 16-7, and they never looked back.

Winnipeg will host the Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre for their first home dates of 2013.


Men's Volleyball at UBC
UBC def WESMEN 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-22)

The No. 6 UBC Thunderbirds rebounded from a  five-set loss on Friday to defeat the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-22) Saturday evening on the West Coast in Vancouver.

Match Statistics

UBC improves to 9-5 on the year, putting them in a tie for fourth in the conference. Winnipeg is 7-7 on the year, continuing their streak of splitting every series of the conference season so far.

Jarrid Ireland led UBC with a match high 15 kills. Milan Nikic had 37 assists and 13 digs.

Tom Douglas-Powell led the Wesmen with 10 kills. Josh McKay had 28 assists, four kills and a couple of solo blocks.

The ‘Birds fell behind by two in the third set and Winnipeg clung to that slim lead until a huge solo block from UBC’s Chris Howe evened the score at 18. After the teams traded a few points, UBC went up 21-20 on another big block from Alex Russell and Milan Nikic.

The score was 23-22 when Jarrid Ireland blasted his 15th kill of the game through the Winnipeg defence, and Casey Schouten’s attack on the next point sailed wide to give UBC the win.

UBC jumped out to a 2-0 sets lead once again, winning the opening sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-23. The Thunderbirds did not squander the lead on this night. Winnipeg opened the series on Friday overcoming a 0-2 deficit to win in five sets.

Winnipeg will play their first matches on home court of 2013 next Friday and Saturday against the Saskatchewan Huskies.


Friday, January 11 - Men's and Women's Volleyball at UBC

UBC def WESMEN 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-15)

The top-ranked UBC Thunderbirds defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0  (25-21, 25-14, 25-15) Friday evening in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Match Statistics

UBC with the win improves to 12-1. Winnipeg sits with a record of 4-9.

Shanice Marcelle and Lisa Barclay led the Thunderbirds with 12 kills each. Setter Brina Derksen-Bergen had 42 assist and 11 digs.

Ozana Nikolic had nine kills to lead the Wesmen. Carleen kruschel had six kills. Ellina Domnidou had 21 assists and 10 digs.

The first set was the only one of the three that was closely contested to the end. UBC got on top 11-6 and nursed a lead between three and five points for the remainder of the set.
Conference kills leader Ozana Nikolic put down a late kill to make it 24-21in UBC's favour, but Jessica von Schilling got in on her third block of the set on the next point to give the T-Birds a 1-0 lead.

The T-Birds dominated the second set winning by a score of 25-14 and closed out the match with a 25-15 set three win.

The teams will wrap up their weekend series Saturday night. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)

Men's Volleyball at UBC
WESMEN def UBC 3-2 (24-26, 13-25, 25-18, 25-23, 16-14)

The Winnipeg Wesmen came back from a two set deficit and defeated the No. 6 ranked UBC Thunderbirds 3-2 (24-26, 13-25, 25-18, 25-23, 16-14) Friday evening in Vancouver.

Match Statistics

The win pushed the Wesmen over the .500 mark with a record of 7-6. UBC with the loss sits at 8-5.

Casey Schouten led Winnipeg with 13 kills. Tom Douglas Powell finished with 12. Setter Josh McKay had 47 assists to go with 11 digs. Brendan Black was a force at the net finishing with 11 blocks, which is a Canada West season high for total blocks in a five set match.

Jarrid Ireland had 19 kills to lead UBC. Ian Perry had 10 digs and setter Milan Nikic had 40 assists.

The fifth set was a dead heat early on, with both teams siding out consistently. Winnipeg gained the upper hand at 7-6 and never looked back in the final set.

Brendan Black had a pair of blocks midway through the fifth to extend Winnipeg’s lead to 13-10. The T-Birds regrouped and charged all the way back to tie it up again at 14, but Casey Schouten’s team-high 13th kill of the night set the Wesmen up with a match-point opportunity, and Tom Douglas-Powell capitalized on it with a great back-row shot into the far corner.

UBC nearly pulled off a big comeback in the fourth set to end the match right there, evening things up late after falling behind 6-0 and as many as seven points off the lead early on. Rob Gotch subbed on for a brilliant performance, putting down six kills on seven attacks in the set while adding a block and a couple digs, but the Wesmen block was too much to overcome in the end.

UBC actually outblocked Winnipeg 18-14 in the match, but the Wesmen seemed to keep coming up with blocks in big moments. Black had a block on game point to end the fourth set, and he was in on 13 of his team’s 14 blocks in the match.

The teams go head to head again on Saturday at 9:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)
