The UBC Thunderbirds, enterting the weekend as the No.5 ranked team defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 63-48 in Canada West regular season action Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The win extends UBC's winning streak to five games and improves their record to 9-3. Winnipeg sees their record fall to 5-8 in the Prarie Division.
Kris Young led the Thunderbirds with a game high in both points and rebounds. Young scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds. She also dished out seven assists. Leigh Stansfield was next with 10 points.
Yael Kaplan led the Wesmen with eight points. Megan Noonan added seven. Stephanie Kleysen led Winnipeg in rebounding with seven.
The visiting Thunderbirds had the early advantage in the contest leading by a slim 15-11 margin after the opening quarter. The teams played a releatively close second quarter with UBC outscoring Winnipeg 16-14 to take a 31-25 lead into the halftime break. The Thunderbirds seized control of the contest in the opening five minutes of the third quarter by reeling off eight straight points to extend their lead to 39-25. UBC continued to hold their double digit lead and led 47-32 after three quarters. Winnipeg was unable to put a dent into the UBC lead in the final quarter as the Thunderbirds came away with the 63-48 victory.
UBC will host Brandon and Regina next Friday and Saturday. Winnipeg will head out on to the road to face UNBC in Prince George on Thursday followed by a stop in Calgary on Saturday to face the Mount Royal University Cougars.

WESMEN 93 UBC 96 (Overtime)
The No. 2 ranked UBC Thunderbirds handed the Winnipeg Wesmen their first regular season loss on home court with a thrilling 96-93 overtime victory Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.

UBC with the victory improves their record to 10-2. Winnipeg, entered the contest with a perfect 7-0 home record sees their overall record fall to 9-4.
Brylle Kamen led the way for UBC scoring a team high 26 points and collecting 13 rebounds. Doug Plumb added 17 while O'Brian Wallace was next with 14.
Winnipeg was led by Steven Wesley's game high 29 points. Travis Krahn and Andrew Cunningham added 14 each. Cunningham also dished out nine assists. Dominique Brown and Benny Iko each scored 10.
The two Canada West powerhouses needed extra time with the score tied at 84-84 after regulation time. UBC gained the advantage in the early stages of the extra frame scoring seven of the first nine points to jump out to a 91-86 lead. A Steven Wesley jumper narrowed the score to 91-88. Doug Plumb sank two free throws to extend the led back to five at 93-88 when Winnipeg caught fire. A three pointer by Andrew Cunningham followed by a Dominique Brown basket tied the score at 93-93 with 1:11 left in the extra frame. Brylle Kaman nailed a two-pointer followed by a free throw by Plumb to make the score 96-93 with 18 seconds left. Winnipeg had a chance to tie the score but a Cunningham three pointer missed the mark.
The contest was a tight affair with the Wesmen holding a slim 18-15 lead after the opening quarter. UBC recovered in the second by going on a 10-2 run to hold a 25-20 lead with 7:30 left to play until halftime. The teams exchanged leads until the final minute as UBC scored six unanswered points to take a 35-30 lead into the halftime break. UBC took control of te contest in the early stages of the third quarter leading by as much as 13 points on three occasions, the latest being 57-44 with 1:55 remaining. Winnipeg caught fire going on a quarter ending 11-2 run to cut the UBC lead to 59-55 after three quarters. Winnipeg made up the difference in the fourth quarter outscoring UBC 29-25 to force the extra frame.
UBC returns home to face Brandon and Regina next weekend. Winnipeg will be on the road against UNBC on Thursday and Mount Royal on Saturday.

The University of Victoria Vikes opened up their second half schedule with a 79-63 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Game Statistics
The win pushes the Vikes record to 7-4 while Winnipeg drops to 5-7.
Jessica Renfrew led the Vikes with 21 points. Winnipeg native Debbie Yeboah had 20 points, nine rebounds and eight assist. Jenny Lewis finished with 10.
Third year guard Yael Kaplan led the Wesmen with 15 points. Lauren Anderson added 10. Tia Coulter led the team in rebounds with seven.
The Vikes relied on the long ball in this contest draining 14 three pointers, with Yeboah and Renfrew sinking three each.
The visiting Vikes jumped out to a 39-33 lead at halftime but turned the game up a notch in the second half.
Victoria took advantage of several Wesmen turnovers and outscored Winnipeg 26-14 in the third quarter to open up a 65-47 lead after 30 minutes.
Winnipeg outscored the Vikes 16-14 in the final quarter.
The Wesmen will play the UBC Thunderbirds Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre. Victoria will travel across town to play the Manitoba Bisons.

In a battle between two Canada West powerhouses, Winnipeg won the battle on this night in dramatic fashion. The Wesmen thanks to some last minute heroics beat the University of Victoria Vikes 64-61 at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The victory improves Winnipegs record to 9-3. Victoria with the loss falls to 7-4.
Steven Wesley led Winnipeg with 23 points. Benny Iko finished with a double-double 15 points and 13 rebounds. Dominique Brown added 11 points.
Terrell Evans led the Vikes with 15 points. Brandon Dunlop and Kyle Peterson each had 11. Chris McLaughlin and Michael Acheampong each grabbed seven rebounds.
The dramatics came at the expense of Wesmen fifth year forward Benny Iko. Iko drained a long three pointer from beyond the arc with 35 seconds left in the fourth quarter and was fouled just as he let the shot go. The 66 post calmly sank the free throw to complete the four point play to put Winnipeg in front by a score of 60-59. Wesmen guard Dominique Brown drained a pair of free throws to put the home team up by a score of 62-59. Victoria scored a late basket with 15 seconds left to narrow the score at 62-61 but on the next possession Travis Krahn was fouled and sealed the victory for the Wesmen sinking both free throws.
The contest started out with both teams struggling in the opening half. Winnipeg shot 31% from the field in the opening 20 minutes compared to 27% by Victoria. Winnipeg went into the halftime break with a slim 29-27 lead.
The Vikes made a charge in the third quarter thanks to three-pointers by Dunlop and Peterson. Victoria outscored Winnipeg 18-11 to hold a 45-40 lead after thirty minutes.
In the fourth quarter Victoria held the lead in the early stages until a basket by Dominique Brown tied the score at 52-52 with just over 4:00 left to play. The teams exchanged baskets to set up the last minute dramatics.
