WESMEN 67 Lakehead 84 "Championship Final"
The Lakehead University Thunderwolves defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 84-67 in the Championship Final of the 2012 Coca Cola Wesmen Classic. The victory by Lakehead is the fourth Classic title in the school’s history. Tournament All-Star Ryan Thomson led all scorers with 22 points. Tournament MVP Yoosrie Salhia had a double-double 12 points and 12 rebounds. Benny Iko led the Wesmen with 16 points and seven rebounds. Steven Wesley added 15 points. Wesley and Iko were both named to the Tournament All-Star team. Lakehead went into the halftime break leading by a five point margin at 32-27. In the second half the Thunderwolves held off several Wesmen charges and outscored Winnipeg 52-40 while connecting on 19-of-29 (66%) from the field. Lakehead finishes the three day tournament with a record of 3-0. Winnipeg finishes with a record of 2-1.

WESMEN 60 Dickinson State 64

The Dickinson State University Bluehawks picked up a split in their two game non-conference series against the Winnipeg Wesmen after a 64-60 victory Saturday morning at the Duckworth Centre. Winnipeg won the opening game Friday morning 78-60. Janae Moore led the Bluehawks with a double-double, 22 points and 11 rebounds. Mariah Duran added 12 points, including three-three pointers. Winnipeg was led by Stephanie Kleysen’s 12 points and 10 rebounds. Kerri Kuzbyt and Tia Coulter added nine each. Both teams came out firing in the opening half, with each team shooting over 50% from the field in the opening twenty minutes. Dickinson State went into the halftime break leading 35-33. The Bluehawks extended their lead to 50-42 after outscoring the Wesmen 15-9 in the third quarter. Winnipeg made a charge late in the fourth quarter only to see Dickinson State hold their ground for the 64-60 victory.

The Winnipeg Wesmen overcame a 22 point first quarter deficit to defeat the Mount Royal University Cougars 96-79 in the semi finals of the 46th Annual Coca Cola Wesmen Classic. Winnipeg trailed 30-8 after the opening quarter of play. The Wesmen rebounded in a big way in the second quarter outscoring the Cougars 30-12 to trail 42-38 at the halftime break. In the third quarter both teams exchanged 8-0 runs in the early part and soon after Winnipeg had a lead they would not give up. A pair of three-pointers by Travis Krahn and one by Benny Iko were part of a quarter closing 11-4 run and gave the Wesmen a 62-58 lead after three quarters. Winnipeg outscored the Cougars 34-21 in the fourth quarter to make the final tally 34-21. Benny Iko led the Wesmen with a game high 22 points. Travis Krahn added 16. Jordan Clennon had 14 and Steven Wesley finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Awet Abraha led the Cougars with 18 points. Nick Loewen added 16. Winnipeg will face the winner of the Lakehead/Dickinson State semi final in the championship final Sunday night at 8:00 p.m.

A second quarter outburst helped the Winnipeg Wesmen to a 78-60 victory over the Dickinson State University Bluehawks in the first of two non-conference games at the 46th Annual Wesmen Classic. The score was deadlocked at 12-12 after the opening ten minutes but Winnipeg took control of the game in the second quarter outscoring the Bluehawks 22-9 to take a 32-21 lead into halftime. Winnipeg continued their strong play in the third quarter scoring 29 points and held the Bluehawks to 14 points in the quarter. The Wesmen had control of the game leading 63-35 after three quarters. Alex Warburton led the Wesmen with 15 points and eight rebounds. Yael Kaplan added 13. Kerri Kuzbyt had 11 points and five assists. Janae Moore led Dickinson State with 13 points. Lorna Shepherd was next with 12 points and nine rebounds. The two teams will wrap up their two game series on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m.

The hometown Winnipeg Wesmen advanced to the semi final round of the Coca Cola Wesmen Classic with a convincing 88-41 victory over the Keyano College Huskies Friday night at the Duckworth Centre. Guard Jordan Clennon led the Wesmen with 15 points. Mark McNee added 13, including a pair of highlight reel dunks. Travis Krahn finished with 11, including three-three pointers and Samuel Hattin added 10. Yonas Berhe led the Huskies with 13 points and seven rebounds. Winnipeg went into the halftime break with a 46-25 advantage. The Wesmen kept the pressure on the Huskies outscoring their opponents 42-16 in the final half. Winnipeg finished the contest connecting on 56% of their shots from the field. Keyano College shot 25% in the contest. Winnipeg will face the winner of the Mayville State-Mount Royal contest Saturday night at 6:30 p.m.
