Women's Basketball -
WESMEN
68 Manitoba 60 (Overtime)

It was a slow start but what a finish. The Winnipeg Wesmen needed overtime to defeat the Manitoba Bisons 68-60 Wednesday night at the 22nd Annual  Duckworth Challenge held at the Duckworth Centre.

Game Statistics

The cross-town rivals were tied at 58-58 after regulation time.

Winnipeg will enter the holiday break with a record of 5-6. Manitoba finishes their first half schedule at 2-9.

Third year guard Yael Kaplan led the Wesmen with 19 points, including four-three pointers. Stephanie Kleysen finished with a double-double 14 points and a game high 18 rebounds. First year guard Megan Noonan also scored 14.

Manitoba was led by Stephanie Gill's game high 23 points, including six-three pointers. Brittany Koop added 14 while Robyn Eyer finished with 13. Rebecca Potter led the team with nine rebounds.

The game was a slow start for both teams with either drumming up much offence in the opening ten minutes. Winnipeg held a slim 12-9 lead after therr opening quarter. The Wesmen continued to lead well into the second quarter and after a Danielle Baril free throw Winnipeg extended their lead to double digits at 26-16. Manitoba did not let up scoring five straight points to cut the Wesmen lead to 26-21. Winnipeg went into the halftime break leading 27-23.

Manitoba made their move in the third quarter. An 11-0 run, with Brittany Koop scoring six straight points gave enabled the Bisons to take a 37-30 lead with 4:15 left in the quarter. The Wesmen relied on the long ball to get the lead back. Three-pointers by Kleysen and Kaplan and a driving lay-up by Kerri Kuzbyt gave Winnipeg a 38-37 lead. Manitoba was able to lead after three quarters by a margin of 40-38.

The teams battled for every point in the fourth quarter. Manitoba trailed 58-56 until Rebecca Potter hit a shot with 18 seconds to play to tie the score at 58-58. The Bisons had a chance to win in regulation time but they were not able to get a last second shot away.

Winnipeg dominated the extra frame outscoring Manitoba 10-2 to come away with the victory.

Stephanie Kleysen (Winnipeg) and Stephanie Gill (Manitoba) were named the Duckworth Challenge Players of the Game.

The Wesmen will continue their regular season schedule on January 11-12 hosting Victoria and UBC. Manitoba will next see action on the same weekend against the Vikes and Thunderbirds at the U of Manitoba.
 
Men's Basketball - WESMEN 74 Manitoba 71

Wesmen forward Steven Wesley and guard Andrew Cunningham each registered double doubles to help lead the Winnipeg Wesmen to a dramatic 74-71 victory over the Manitoba Bisons in the final game of the 22nd Annual Duckworth Challenge Wednesday night at the Duckworth Centre.

Wesley scored a 21 points and hauled in 13 rebounds, while Cunningham scored 13 points and dished out 11 assists, to help the Wesmen improve their record to 8-3 which puts them in sole possession of second place in the Prairie Division. Manitoba with the loss drops to 7-4 heading into the holiday break.

Nolan Gooding added 11 points, including three-three pointers.Benny Iko had 10 points, nine rebounds and five blocks.

Yigit Ozsayiner led Manitoba with 19 points. Kevin Oliver finished with a double-double 17 points and 11 rebounds. Stephan Walton added 13 while Davidson Joseph finished with 10.

In a fast paced first quarter that only saw one stoppage of play, Manitoba had the advantage early on leading 22-21. Ozsayiner came out on fire scoring 13 points in the opening quarter. Winnipeg scored five quick points to open the second quarter and took the lead at 26-24. Winnipeg held a slim 33-32 late in the second quarter but got a bit of breathing room scoring six straight points to carry a 39-32 lead into the halftime break.

The Wesmen came out firing on all cylinders to open the second half. Three pointers by Benny Iko, Travis Krahn and Andrew Cunningham sparked a 10-2 run to extend the Wesmen lead to 49-34 with just over six minutes to play in the quarter. A Benny Iko basket late extended the Winnipeg lead to 60-42 when Manitoba mounted a charge. The Bisons went on a quarter ending 12-0 run to cut the Winnipeg lead to 60-54 after thirty minutes.

In a wild fourth quarter Winnipeg held the lead until with just under 1:25 left to play. Ozsayiner nailed a jumper to give Manitoba a 69-68 lead. Winnipeg responded in the final minute with a three pointer by Nolan Gooding followed by a bucket by Wesley to give the Wesmen the lead back and one they would not relinquish.

Steven Wesley (Winnipeg) and Kevin Oliver (Manitoba) were named the Duckworth Challenge Players of the Game.

Note: Winnipeg with the two basketball victories, combined with one volleyball victory win the 22nd Annual Duckworth Challenge by a 3-1 margin.

Winnipeg will next see action at the 46th Annual Wesmen Classic December 28-30. The team will resume regular season play on January 11-12 hosting Victoria and UBC. Manitoba will open up their second half schedules against UBC and Victoria on the same weekend.

"Duckworth Challenge - Volleyball"


Women's Volleyball -
Manitoba def WESMEN 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-18)

The Winnipeg Wesmen dropped a straight sets (25-15, 25-13, 25-18) decision to the Manitoba Bisons Tuesday evening at the 22nd Annual Duckworth Challenge at the University of Manitoba.

Match Statistics

Manitoba will head into the holiday break with a record of 7-5. The Wesmen complete their first half schedule with a record of 4-8.

Rachel Cockrell led Manitoba with a match high 14 kills. Nicole Hall led the Bisons in digs with 17.

Ozana Nikolic led the Wesmen with seven kills. Sarah Lynch and Carleen Kruschel each had five. Kruschel had a team leading 10 digs. Lynch finished with two blocks.

In the opening set Winnipeg stayed within striking distance trailing by a slim 16-12 margin at the technical break. Manitoba took control of the set, reeling off six straight points to extend their lead to 22-12. The Bisons won the opening set 25-15.

Manitoba jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead in the second set and continued their strong play to extend their lead to 16-7 at the break. Manitoba went on to win the set 25-13.

A determined Winnipeg squad came out in the third set. The Wesmen and Bisons were squared at 10-10 early on until Manitoba took advantage of some Winnipeg attacking errors to lead 16-13 at the technical break.The Wesmen stayed within three points late in the set, trailing 21-18 but Manitoba closed out the set on a 4-0 run to win the third set 25-18.

Sarah Lynch (Winnipeg) and Rachel Cockrell (Manitoba) were named the Duckworth Challenge Players of the Game.

The Wesmen will next play in the new year on January 11 when they travel to UBC to play the Thunderbirds.

The Wesmen Men's Volleyball team defeated the No. five ranked Manitoba Bisons 3-0 ) 25-16, 25-23, 25-23) Tuesday night in the final game of the volleyball portion of the 22nd Annual Duckworth Challenge at the University of Manitoba.

Match Statistics

The victory evens this years challenge at 1-1 heading into the basketball portion to be held Wednesday night at the Duckworth Centre.

Winnipeg with the victory has a record of 6-6. Manitoba falls to 7-5 in the Canada West Conference standings.

Tom Douglas-Powell was a force for Winnipeg finishing with 11 kills and three service aces. Cameron Baydock was strong at the net with five blocks to along with five kills. Libero Riley Delavau had nine digs.

Manitoba was led by Evan Schmidt with eight kills. Derek Nieroda led the team with seven digs.

The Wesmen took advantage of a shaky Bisons squad in the opening set. Cameron Baydock had three kills and three blocks in the opening set as the Wesmen outplayed Manitoba in a 25-18 win in the opening set.

In the second set Manitoba held the lead for a good majority of the time but the Wesmen would not be denied finishing off on a strong note to win the set 25-23 and take a 2-0 lead in the match. Both teams made a lot of unenforced errors in the set, but Winnipeg had 16 kills compared to only seven for Manitoba.

The third set was a back and fourth affair that could have gone either way. Both teams traded the lead often and were pumped up by a couple massive blocks and kills from Evan Jackson and Matt Stubler respectively. But in the end the Wesmen prevailed winning the final set by a score of 25-23.

Cameron Baydock (Winnipeg) and Dane Pischke (Manitoba) were named the Duckworth Challenge Players of the Game.

The Wesmen will next see action on January 11th with a visit to UBC to take on the Thunderbirds.
