Women's Volleyball -
WESMEN def Brandon 3-2 (25-21, 29-27, 10-25, 23-25, 15-10)
The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a home and home series sweep over the Brandon Bobcats with a dramatic 3-2 (25-21, 29-27, 10-25, 23-25, 15-10) Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Match Statistics
Winnipeg now (4-7), beat the Bobcats (5-7) in three straight sets Thursday night in Brandon.
Second year left side Ozana Nikolic led the Wesmen with a match high 24 kills. Fourth year left side and team captain Carleen Kruschel finished with 14 kills and a match high 28 digs. Sarah Lynch added 13 kills and three blocks. Setter Ellina Domnidou had 50 assists and 12 defensive digs.
Brandon was led by Shanlee McLennan's 15 kills. Chloe Reimer and Meaghan Robertson each added 10. Kendra Bommersbach led the team in digs with 24. Kellie Baker had 44 assists in the setters position. Alexis Loewen had nine blocks.
Winnipeg jumped out to a 16-9 lead at the technical timeout of the opening set. The Bobcats made a couple of runs to pull closer, including late in the set to make the score 21-18. Winnipeg responded with kills by Nikolic and Lynch to make the score 24-18. The Wesmen went on to win the set 25-21.
The Bobcats responded in the second set leading 16-15 at the technical break and carried the lead all the way to set point at 24-20. The determined Wesmen squad reeled off four straight points to tie the score at 24-24. An exchange of points carried the score to 27-27 but Winnipeg would close out the set on back to back kills by Kruschel and Nikolic to win the set 29-27.
In the third set Brandon simply dominated jumping out to a 16-5 lead at the technical and eventually getting back in the match with a 25-10 set three win.
A Carleen Kruschel kill gave the Wesmen a 16-14 lead at the timeout. Winnipeg carried a two point advantage all the way to 23-21 and had the match in their sights. Brandon had other ideas and took advantage of three Wesmen attacking errors to win the set 25-23 to force a fifth and deciding set.
Winnipeg led the fifth set by a score of 10-3 and never looked back winning the deciding set 15-10 to complete the sweep.
The Wesmen will close out their first half schedule on Tuesday night in the volleyball portion of the 22nd Annual Duckworth Challenge against the Bisons at the University of Manitoba. Brandon will next play in January with a visit to Trinity Western.

WESMEN def Brandon 3-0 (31-29, 25-11, 29-27)
The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the No. six ranked Brandon University Bobcats 3-0 (31-29, 25-11, 29-27) in the second match of a home and home series Saturday evening in Winnipeg.

Brandon beat Winnipeg in three straight sets in the series opening match Thursday night in Brandon.
Winnipeg improves it's record to 5-6. Brandon finishes the first half schedule with a record of 9-3.
Tom Douglas-Powell led the Wesmen with 10 kills. Casey Schouten added nine while Brendan Black had eight kills and six blocks. Riley Delavau led the team with 12 digs. Cameron Baydock was in on seven blocks.
Brandon was led by Roy Ching's nine kills. Dan Boutwell and Sam Tuivai added eight each. Scott Neufeld led the team with 11 digs.
The provincial rivals battled in the opening stages but neither team gave the other any opportunity to break the match open. The largest lead margin heading into the technical timeout was three points (7-4 Wpg). A kill by Sam Tuivai gave the Bobcats a 16-15 lead at the technical break. Winnipeg restored their three point lead later in the set at 21-18. Winnipeg looked to have the first set won, leading 24-20, when Brandon reeled off five straight points to lead 25-24. The teams exchanged points to 29-29 when Winnipeg scored the final two points on kills by Douglas-Powell and Schouten to win the opening set 31-29.
Winnipeg kept the pedal to the metal in the second set racing out to a quick 16-6 lead at the technical break and eventually went on to win the set 25-11.
The third set was a battle like the opening set. Winnipeg held a slim 16-13 lead at the break and the teams battled all the way to 22-22. Brandon fought off four match points later in the set but Winnipeg was finally able to break through. A kill by Douglas-Powell followed by a Bobcat attacking error closed out the third set in Winnipeg's favor by a score of 29-27.
Winnipeg will close out their first half schedule on Tuesday with a visit to the University of Manitoba in the volleyball portion of the 22nd Annual Duckworth Challenge. Brandon will next see action in January against Trinity Western.

The Winnipeg Wesmen dominated from start to finish in a 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-13) victory over the Brandon Bobcats Thursday evening in Brandon.
Match Statistics
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 3-7. Brandon falls below .500 with a record of 5-6.
Winnipeg took control in the first set and cruised to a 25-14 victory in the opening set. The visiting Wesmen did not let up in the second set, taking control of the match with a 25-15 win in the set.
The Bobcats put up a fight in the third set. The Bobcats stayed close early on trailin g 11-10 until the Wesmen ran off five straight points to extend their lead to 16-10 at the technical break. Winnipeg closed out the match winning the third set 25-13.
The duo of Ozana Nikolic and Carleen Kruschel were both on top of their games in this match. Nikolic led the Wesmen with a match high 17 kills. Nikolic finished the match with a hitting percentage of .696. Kruschel had 16 kills, a hitting percentage of .438 and a team leading 10 digs. Ellina Domnidou playing her first full match at the setter position had 40 assists.Sarah Lynch led the team with four blocks.
The Bobcats were led by Victoria Dakin's nine kills. Meaghan Robertson finished with seven. Kendra Bommersbach led Brandon in digs with nine.
The two teams will wrap up the home and home series on Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

The score does not tell the story in this match between provincial rivals. The Brandon University Bobcats defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen in three tough sets (25-22, 29-27, 25-19) Thursday evening on the road in Brandon.

In the opening set the Bobcats jumped out to an early 11-6 lead but Winnipeg fought back later in the set to tie the score at 16-16. The teams exchanged points to 21-21 when Brandon took advantage of three straight Wesmen errors to set up set point at 24-21. Brandon went on to win the opening set 25-22.
The Bobcats held the early advantage in an evenly played second set. Brandon went into the technical break with a 16-13 lead. A pair of kills by Casey Schouten brought the Wesmen to within one at 18-17. Winnipeg fought off three set points late in the set but Brandon went on to win the set 29-27.
The teams were dead even in the start of the third set. The score was tied at 10-10 in the early stages but the hometown Bobcats scored five of the next six points to carry a 16-11 lead at the technical break. Brandon closed out the match with a 25-19 win in the third set.
