Women's Basketball -
WESMEN 84 UBC Okanagan 73
A total team effort lifted the Winnipeg Wesmen to an 84-73 victory over the UBC Okanagan Heat Sunday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Game Statistics
The victory improves the Wesmen's record to 4-6. The Heat sit with an identical record of 4-6.
Alyssa Grant led the Wesmen with a double-double 14 points, 11 rebounds. Tia Coulter added 13. Megan Noonan had 12 and Alex Warburton tallied 10 points.
The Heat were led by Emily Kanester's game high 18 points. Sarah Allison added 16. Roslyn Huber had 12 and Angela White finished with 11.
Winnipeg started the game on a 6-0 run in the opening two minutes and carried their strong play to a 23-14 lead after the opening quarter. Both teams struggled to score points in the early stages of the second quarter with only four points being scored in the opening four minutes with the Wesmen holding a 25-16 lead. The Heat managed to cut into the deficit, taking advantage of several trips to the foul line to cut the Wesmen lead to 31-27 with four minutes left in the opening half. The home town Wesmen got their game back and went on a 11-2 run to close out the firs half. Winnipeg went into the halftime break leading 45-33.
The Wesmen started the second half the same way they ended the opening half. Winnipeg went on a 14-5 run in the opening five minutes to extend their lead to 59-38. The Wesmen went on to outscore the Heat 27-11 in the third quarter to open up a 72-44 lead after three quarters.
The Heat put some pressure on the Wesmen in the fourth quarter outscoring the Wesmen 18-4 to cut the lead to 76-62 with over four minutes in the contest. Winnipeg rallied and got some key baskets by Tia Coulter down the stretch to preserve the 84-73 victory.
Winnipeg will close out their first half schedule on Wednesday night hosting the Manitoba Bisons in the basketball portion of the 22nd Annual Duckworth Challenge. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

WESMEN 58 UBC Okanagan 51
The Winnipeg Wesmen kept their undefeated home streak alive with a 58-51 victory over the UBC Okanagan Heat Sunday afternoon in Winnipeg.
Game Statistics
Winnipeg with the victory improves to 7-3, including a perfect 5-0 on home court. The Wesmen sit alone in second place in the Prairie Division of the Canada West Conference. UBC Okanagan with the loss falls to 1-9.
Steven Wesley led Winnipeg with a game high 20 points and eight rebounds. Samuel Hattin added nine points draining three-three pointers. Andrew Cunningham dished out 12 assists in the win.
The Heat were led by Mitch Goodwin's 14 points and seven rebounds. Greet Gill added 12 and Anwar Faza finished with 11.
In a tight defensive first quarter where points were hard to come by Winnipeg outscored the Heat 16-11. The teams struggled in the second quarter with the Wesmen holding a 10-9 advantage in the quarter to take a 26-21 lead into the halftime break. Winnipeg connected on 37% of their shots from the field in the opening half compared to 28% for the Heat.
Winnipeg came out of the halftime break on fire outscoring the Heat 19-8 in the opening seven minutes to extend their lead to 45-29. Winnipeg carried a 47-33 lead into the final quarter. The Heat made a charge late in the fourth quarter cutting the Wesmen lead to 49-43 with under five minutes to play but the Wesmen held off the charge thanks in part to some key baskets by Steven Wesley and Benny IKo to make the final tally 58-51.
Winnipeg will take on the Manitoba Bisons on Wednesday night in the 22nd Annual Duckworth Challenge. Game time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre. UBC Okanagan will next see action on January 5th against the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack.

Thompson Rivers 72 WESMEN 52
The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack picked up a 72-52 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen in a rare Saturday afternoon game at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The visiting WolfPack trailed 18-16 after the opening quarter but took control of the game in the second frame outscoring the Wesmen 21-8 to take a 37-26 lead into the halftime break. Thompson Rivers put the game away in the third period outscoring the Wesmen 21-13 to extend their lead to 58-39.
Fifth year guard Jen Ju led the WolfPack with a game high 23 points, including five-three pointers. Three other WolfPack players scored in double digits with Tracy Kocs scoring 15. Diana Schuetze finished with a double-double 14 points and 14 rebounds. Taiysa Worsfeld finished with 11.
Winnipeg was led by fourth year forward Alyssa Grant's 12 points. Stephanie Kleysen finished with nine points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.
Thompson Rivers connected on 34% of their shots from the field in the opening half, but improved to 50% in the second half. Winnipeg finished the game connecting on 33% from the field. The WolfPack had the edge on the boards out-rebounding the Wesmen 47-36.
The teams will both be in action on Sunday afternoon. The WolfPack will travel across town to take on the Manitoba Bisons while Winnipeg will play host to the UBC Okanagan Heat. Game time at the Duckworth Centre is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

WESMEN 90 Thompson Rivers 68
The starting unit for the Winnipeg Wesmen played a big role in leading the team to a decisive 90-68 victory over the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Saturday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre.

Winnipeg improves their regular season record to 6-3. The WolfPack fall below .500 with a record of 4-5.
All five Winnipeg starters finished the contest scoring in double-digits. Guard Travis Krahn led the way scoring a game high 23 points. Krahn was on fire from three point territory draining seven-of-eight attempts from outside. Benny Iko continued his strong play as of late scoring 18 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Steven Wesley added 12 points and a team high nine rebounds. Nolan Gooding scored 11 while Andrew Cunningham added 10 points and dished out 11 assists.
Blaz Bozinovic led Thompson Rivers with 16 points and nine rebounds. Brett Roualt added 10 points.
Winnipeg came out of the gate on fire building a quick 14-2 lead in the opening three minutes. After draining a pair of three-pointers early on, Winnipeg went back to the outside shot sinking three more in a 19-12 quarter ending run. The Wesmen led 33-14 after the opening quarter. The Wesmen were never threatened in the second quarter, leading by as much as 30 points at one point. Winnipeg went into the halftime break leading 48-24. Winnipeg finished the opening half with 10-three pointers and a shooting percentage of 55%.
The hometown Wesmen continued their domination in the second half and once were on fire from all over the court. The Wesmen scored 42 points in the second half, connected on 63% of their shots from the field and drained nine-three pointers in the final 20 minutes.
The Wesmen finished the contest with 19 three pointers and an overall shooting percentage of 58% from the field. Winnipeg was solid on the boards out-rebounding the WolfPack 33-24.
Winnipeg will close out their weekend play on Sunday afternoon against the UBC Okanagan Heat at 3:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre. The WolfPack will play the Manitoba Bisons.
