Volleyball Wraps Up Series Against Spartans

Men's Volleyball -
Trinity Western def WESMEN 3-2(26-24,22-25,21-25,27-25,15-11)
The Trinity Western University Spartans avenged last night's loss by defeating the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-2 (26-24, 22-25, 21-25, 27-25, 15-11) in a marathon match Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Match Statistics
Winnipeg beat the No.2 ranked Spartans in four sets Friday night.
The Spartans with the victory improve to 8-2. Winnipeg drops below the .500 mark with a record of 4-5.
Brad Kufske led the Spartans with a match high 17 kills and 17 digs. Steven Marshall had 14 kills. Nicholas Del Bianco had 13. Lucas Van Berkel led the Spartans at the net with eight blocks.
The Wesmen were led by the duo of Matt Stubler and Tom Douglas-Powell, each finishing with 16 kills. Casey Schouten finished with 12 kills and 15 digs. Setter Josh McKay had 50 assists to go with his 15 digs. Brendan Black was in on six blocks.
The Spartans came out of the gate strong taking the first set 26-24. Winnipeg battled back and took momentum on their side winning the next two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-21.
A battle for the ages took place in the fourth set. Winnipeg held a slim 16-15 lead at the technical break and later on after a Stubler kill and an attacking error by the Spartans, Winnipeg led 22-20. Trinity Western responded scoring three straight points to lead 23-22. The teams battled and exchanged points to 25-25 and the epic set came to an end in the Spartans favor on a kill by Derek Thiessen followed by a Wesmen error to close out the set 27-25.
In the fifth set the Spartans jumped out to a 10-6 lead but the determined Wesmen squad scored three points in a row to cut the lead to 10-9. The comeback fell short as the Spartans scored five of the final seven points to win the deciding set 15-11.
The Spartans will be on the road next weekend against the UBC Okanagan Heat. Winnipeg will play the Brandon Bobcats in a home and home series beginning Thursday night in Brandon and returning to Winnipeg on Saturday night.
Women's Volleyball -
Trinity Western def WESMEN 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-13)
The Trinity Western University Spartans completed a two match against the Winnipeg Wesmen with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-13) victory Saturday evening in Winnipeg.
Match Statistics
The No. 1 ranked Spartans won the opening match of the weekend series Friday night in three sets.
With the win the Spartans improve their record to 9-1. The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 2-7.
Amber Brown and Alicia Perrin led the Spartans with 10 kills each. Kristen Moncks led the team in digs with 13. Perrin had five blocks to lead the team in that department.
Sarah Lynch led the Wesmen with seven kills and four blocks. Ozana Nikolic had six kills and 10 digs.
The Wesmen and Spartans started the contest exchanging points. The Spartans took a 15-11 lead prior to the technical timeout and put the set out of reach going on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 22-11. The Spartans went on to win the set 25-14.
A pair of Trinity Western runs was the story in the second set. Winnipeg held a slim 3-2 lead early on but another 7-0 run gave the Spartans a 9-3 lead and soon after another run, this time 5-0 put the Spartans ahead 14-4. Trinity Western would eventually win the set 25-17.
The Spartans closed out the match winning the third set 25-13.
The Spartans will be home to UBC Okanagan next week. Winnipeg will play Brandon in a home and home series beginning Thursday night in Brandon.

Trinity Western def WESMEN 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-14)
The No. 1 ranked Trinity Western University Spartans ran their winning streak to eight with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-14) victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Trinity Western with the win improves to 8-1 in regular season play. Winnipeg falls to 2-6.
The two teams were even in the opening stages of set number one. The Spartans held a 13-10 advantage prior to the technical timeout but turned the momentum onto their side soon after. The Spartans reeled off five straight points to carry an 18-10 lead late and continued to hold off any Wesmen attack to win the opening set 25-17.
In set number two the teams battled to 15-15 until the Spartans once grabbed control. Led by Carly Hamilton's three kills, the Spartans went on a 7-1 run to open up a 22-16 lead. The teams exchanged points from that point on with the Spartans winning the set 25-19.
The Spartans were in complete control ion the third set, racing out to a 16-5 lead at the technical break and never looked back winning the third set 25-14.
Amy Ott and Carly Hamilton led the Spartans with eight kills each. Alicia Perrin added seven. Kristen Moncks led the team in digs with 16.
Winnipeg was led by Ozana Nikolic and Sarah Lynch, each finishing with seven kills. Nikolic led the Wesmen in digs with nine. Lynch had three blocks to lead the Wesmen in that category.
The teams will meet Saturday night in the late game scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

The Winnipeg Wesmen upset the No.two ranked Trinity Western University Spartans 3-1 (25-22, 25-16, 27-29, 25-15) Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The hometown Wesmen gained the advantage early on in the opening set jumping out to a 16-13 lead at the technical timeout. The break seemed to inspire the Spartans who went on to reel off five straight points, including a pair of kills by Steven Marshall to hold a 18-16 lead. The Spartans continued to roll and looked to be on the verge of winning the set leading 22-17 when things went downhill. Winnipeg, led by a pair of service aces by Ty Loewen and two big kills by Tomas Douglas-Powell went on a 8-0 run to win the opening set 25-22.
Winnipeg carried their momentum into the second set leading 16-9 at the technical break and continued to put pressure on the Spartans throughout the set. Winnipeg took control of the match winning the second set 25-16.
In the third set Winnipeg held the lead for the majority of the opening stages and hung on to a slim 16-14 lead at the break. The teams exchanged points all the way to 24-22 in Winnipeg's favour and a straight sets victory was on the horizon. A service error followed by a Wesmen attack error tied the game at 24-24. The battle continued to 27-27 when the Spartans scored the final two points to win the set 29-27.
The Wesmen would not be denied in the fourth set leading throughout on their way to a 25-15 set win to close out the match and the upset.
Casey Schouten led the Wesmen with a match high 18 kills and three service aces. Tom Douglas-Powell had a solid match finishing with 14 kills. Brendan Black had 11 kills and seven blocks. Libero Riley Delavau led Winnipeg in digs with 14.
Steven Marshall led the Spartans with 15 kills. Nicholas Del Bianco added 10. Tyler Koslowsky led the Spartans with 16 digs.
The two teams will wrap up their weekend series Saturday night in the first match of the evening. Match time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
