Tonight’s game was exciting from the opening whistle to the final, as both teams gave the crowd end to end fast paced basketball the entire evening.
Winnipeg started off fast as they quickly built a lead early in the first quarter and held the lead throughout the quarter. UFV played great defense the entire game; it was the Cascades shooting that was cold early in the game. UFV was held to nine first quarter points and 22 at the half, but by keeping the high scoring Wesmen team to only 33 at the intermission, it set up for an excellent second half.
The third quarter belonged to UFV as the Cascades crawled back into the game by outscoring Winnipeg by 11 points to tie the game at 45 each. UFV continued to play great defense holding Winnipeg to outside shots and not letting their big men penetrated the paint for easy lay-ups. Tied as the fourth quarter started, UFV took control of the game as they outscored Winnipeg by six down the stretch to complete the comeback..
Winnipeg will return to home court for a pair of afternoon games next weekend. On Saturday Winnipeg plays Thompson Rivers and on Sunday will play host to UBC Okanagan. Tip off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. both days.

Like the first quarter, the Spartans started the second with a surge, closing to within two points after a Chelsey Olsen 3-pointer made it 18-16. But, again, similar to the first frame, the Wesmen were dominant in the latter stages. After an Olsen free throw got TWU again back to within two points, at 25-23, Winnipeg went on a 10-0 run, thanks largely to a pair of 3-pointers from Waring, to end the half up 35-23. Winnipeg’s Tia Coulter sunk a lay-up at the buzzer that gave the Wesmen their biggest lead of the game to that point.
The teams played back-and-forth basketball early in the third quarter, but with Winnipeg up 43-30, TWU started to claw back. The Spartans earned seven straight points to close the gap to six points, at 43-37. However, the Wesmen stole some momentum back at the buzzer when Alyssa Grant knocked down a long jumper to give the visitors a 45-37 edge going into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Wesmen proved too strong for the Spartans. They came out fast and put the game away early as they continued to dictate the play and outscored TWU 22-7 over the final 10 minutes.
Winnipeg will wrap up the weekend Saturday night in Abbotsford against Fraser Valley. Game time is 7:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)
