Volleyball Wins Three Of Four In Regina

Men's Volleyball at Regina
Regina def WESMEN 3-1 (25-27, 25-21, 25-19, 25-23)

The Regina Cougars avoided a weekend sweep by defeating the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (25-27, 25-21, 25-19, 25-23) Saturday night in Regina.

Match Statistics

Winnipeg defeated the Cougars in a thrilling five set affair Friday evening.

The Cougars (1-7) pick up their first win of the season. Winnipeg drops below the .500 level with a record of 3-4.

Andrew Nelson led the Cougars with a match high 13 kills. Nathan Cherwaty added 10. Setter Caleb Eschbach had 41 assists and a team high 13 digs. Rhodri Simmonds was a force at the net finishing with 11 blocks.

Winnipeg was led by Casey Schouten's 11 kills. Ty Loewen, Brendan Black and Cameron Baydock each had 10 kills. Black led the team with five blocks. Setter Josh McKay had 39 assists and a match high 14 digs.

The visiting Wesmen had the momentum early on, leading 10-6 in the opening set only to have the Cougars fight back and take a 16-15 lead at the technical break. Regina had a chance to close out the set leading 25-24, but Brendan Black had other ideas. Black scored the next three points (one kill, and two service aces) to lead Winnipeg to a 27-25 set win.

Regina fought back in the second set jumping out to an 11-7 lead and carried the lead at the technical break 16-12. The Cougars went on to win the set 25-21.

In the third set Regina pulled out to a 16-11 lead at the technical break. Brendan Black pounded home three kills to close the gap to 18-15. The Cougars went on a late run and eventually won the set 25-19.

Winnipeg had the advantage at the technical break of the fourth set leading 16-14. The teams battled to 22-22 late in the set. Regina took the lead on a Winnipeg attacking error and had a two point cushion on a Andre Borgeault kill to make the score 24-22. A net violation on Regina closed the gap to 24-23 but on the next play Simmonds put a kill down the middle to close out the set and the match.

Winnipeg will be on home court next Friday and Saturday hosting the Trinity Western University Spartans at the Duckworth Centre.

Women's Volleyball at Regina
WESMEN def Regina 3-1 (25-22, 25-14, 18-25, 29-27)

The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Regina Cougars 3-1 (25-22, 25-14, 18-25, 29-27) for the second time in as many nights on Saturday in Regina.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 2-5. Regina falls to 1-7

Winnipeg took the first two sets by 25-22 and 25-14 to put a stranglehold on the match, but the Cougars held the Wesmen to a negative hitting percentage in the third set and roared back with a 25-18 win to force a fourth.

It looked like Winnipeg was going to cruise to a fairly easy win in the fourth set after leading most of the way and eventually going up 24-20, but the Cougars rallied. The Cougars reeled off four straight points – three of which were off blocks to even the set at 24-24. The Cougars were able to survive five match points, but were unable to survive the sixth as the Wesmen got back-to-back kills from Sarah Lynch and Carleen Kruschel to clinch the match with a 29-27 win.

" I have been very proud of how our team has persevered these weeks, showing up and competing every match.This weekend our efforts were rewarded with a sweep in Regina! So pleased of the "team" we are now and the potential we still have to be more", said Wesmen head coach Diane Scott following the match.

Ozana Nikolic led Winnipeg with 15 kills, while Lynch ended up with nine and Kruschel had eight. Hope Schneider dished out 28 assists, while Alicia Perry led the Wesmen at the net with five blocks.

Desiree Ates, Michelle Sweeting, and Chelsea Ziolkowski all had 12 kills for the Cougars, while Meagan Lane had 36 assists and Megan Semeniuk led all players with 12 digs.
 
Winnipeg returns home for a two-match set against Trinity Western next Friday and Saturday.

Women's Volleyball at Regina
WESMEN def Regina 3-1 (25-14, 19-25, 25-23, 25-18)

The Winnipeg Wesmen picked up their first win of the regular season with a 3-1 (25-14, 19-25, 25-23, 25-18) victory over the Regina Cougars Friday evening on the road in Regina.

Match Statistics

Winnipeg goes to 1-5 in regular season play. Regina drops to 1-6.

Ozana Nikolic led the Wesmen with 20 kills and 11 defensive digs. Carleen Kruschel added 12 kills and 11 digs. Alyssa Kidd finished with eight digs playing at the libero position.

The Cougars were led by the duo of Michelle Sweeting and Desiree Ates, each finishing with 16 kills. Ates led the team with 10 defensive digs.

"We are very happy to pull out a win tonight. We got better as the match went on, a team effort for sure", added Wesmen head coach Diane Scott.

The first set was Winnipeg’s from start to finish, as the Wesmen had just one hitting error, hit .500 as a team, and put together eight consecutive points around the media timeout en route to a 25-14 win. The second set was more contested, as the teams had 12 tie scores and six lead changes before the Cougars put together seven straight points of their own and cruised to a 25-19 win to even the match at one set apiece.

The two teams were never separated by more than two points until after the media timeout, when four straight points gave the Wesmen a 23-17 advantage. The Cougars then reeled off six of the next seven points to get to within one point, but – in what would be a common theme of the match for the U of R – a service error gave Winnipeg a 25-23 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth set, Winnipeg pulled away with an 8-2 run leading up to the media timeout and clinched its first Canada West victory of the season with a 25-18 win.

The Cougars had a 53-41 advantage in kills during the match, but struggled at the line with a total of 21 service errors in the loss.

The two teams will wrap up their two match series Saturday evening. Match time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.


Men's Volleyball at Regina
WESMEN def Regina 3-2 (25-20, 26-24, 22-25, 21-25, 15-8)

The Winnipeg Wesmen evened their regular season record to 3-3 with a thrilling 3-2 (25-20, 26-24, 22-25, 21-25, 15-8) victory over the Regina Cougars Friday evening in Regina.

Match Statistics

Regina with the loss remains winless with a record of 0-7.

Winnipeg was led by Casey Schouten's 13 kills, 10 digs performance. Tom Douglas-Powell had 10 kills. Brendan Black finished with 10 kills and had a great night at the net with eight blocks. Setter Josh McKay had 40 assists, 10 digs and a pair of service aces.

Andrew Nelson led Regina with a match high 21 kills. Andre Borgeaud added 12. Jacques Borgeaud led the Cougars in digs with 12.

The Wesmen led from start to finish in a 25-20 victory in the first set, and outlasted the Cougars for a 26-24 win in the second after getting a kill from Brendan Black and a block by Black and Tom Douglas-Powell to break a late 24-24 tie.

The two teams battled in a back-and-forth third set that was a carbon copy of the previous set, but this time the Cougars were able to take control with five consecutive points following the media timeout and survived a late charge by Winnipeg to take a 25-22 win. The Cougars took a 25-21 win in a fourth set which saw them jump out to an early lead and hang on to force a deciding set.

In that fifth set, Winnipeg scored five of the first seven points, built up a five-point cushion with three straight points around the switch, and cruised to a 15-8 win to clinch its third Canada West victory of the season.

Winnipeg and Regina will battle Saturday evening in the early match scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
