Volleyball Concludes Series In Calgary

Sunday, November 11

Women's Volleyball 
Calgary def WESMEN 3-2 (25-17, 18-25, 25-18, 23-25, 18-16)

The Calgary Dinos completed a weekend sweep with a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Sunday afternoon in Calgary.

Match Statistics

Calgary defeated the Wesmen Saturday afternoon in four sets.

Andrea Price and Courtney Dawson led the Dinos with 15 kills each. Sarah Moncks led the team in digs with 25. Angelica Quiring and Dawson each played a part in seven blocks.

Second year outside hitter Ozana Nikolic led the Wesmen with 14 kills and 21 defensive digs. Team captain Carleen Kruschel had 12 kills and 16 digs. Sarah Lynch added 11 kills and six blocks.

It was a match where the Dinos didn’t take full advantage of many of their opportunities, while the Wesmen scrapped to the finish. The Dinos opened with a 25-17 win in the first set, where they led wire-to-wire, but fell behind early in the second and dropped that one 25-18. Calgary gained the upper hand in the third with a 25-18 win, only to see the determined Wesmen squad win the fourth set 25-23 to force a fifth and deciding set.

The Dinos did just enough to get the win, despite committing service errors on two of their five match point opportunities. A kill by Lindsey Doland set up the final chance, though, and Carleen Kruschel’s attack sailed out the back of the court to give the Dinos an 18-16 win in the deciding fifth set.

Calgary improves their record to .500 at 3-3. Winnipeg sits with a record of 0-5.

Winnipeg will be on the road next week for a two match series in Regina against the Cougars.


Men's Volleyball
Calgary def WESMEN 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-15, 25-17)

The Calgary Dinos avoided a weekend sweep by defeating the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-15, 25-17) Sunday afternoon in Calgary.

Match Statistics

Winnipeg beat the Dinos in the series opener Saturday afternoon in four sets.

Connor Frehlich led Calgary with 11 kills and 11 digs. Greg Mann added 10 kills. Ivan Kartev was a one man blocking machine for the Dinos finishing with 14 blocks to his credit.

Brendan Black and Ty Loewen led Winnipeg with 13 kills each. Black led the team in blocks for the second consecutive night, finishing with seven. Setter Josh McKay had 39 assists to go with his match high 12 digs.

The concluding match of the weekend series started out as a close even affair. Calgary won the opening set by a score of 25-23 but Winnipeg stormed back to even the match taking the second set by a margin of 25-22.

In the pivotal third set, Calgary jumped out to a slim 16-13 lead at the technical break. The Dinos extended their lead even further scoring four unanswered points to lead 20-13 late in the set. Winnipeg closed the gap back to five on kills by Casey Schouten and Tom Douglas-Powell but the Dinos made a statement soon after. The 7-1 middle blocker Kartev registered five blocks in a row to lead Calgary to a 25-15 win in the set.

Calgary carried their momentum into the fourth set leading 16-8 at the technical break and eventually went on to win the fourth set 25-17.

The Dinos with the win improve to 2-4 on the season. Winnipeg sits with a record of 2-3.

Winnipeg will be on the road next week on Friday and Saturday to face the Regina Cougars.

Men's Volleyball
WESMEN def Calgary 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 19-25, 25-19)

The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the hometown Calgary Dinos 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 19-25, 25-19) Saturday afternoon in Calgary.

Match Statistics

Winnipeg even's their regular season record to 2-2. Calgary slips to 1-4.

Tom Douglas Powell led the Wesmen with a match high 18 kills on 27 attempts to finish with a hitting percentage of .630. Casey Schouten finished with 11 kills, seven digs and three service aces. Ty Loewen had nine kills and setter Josh Mckay had 41 assists and eight digs. Brendan Black was a force at the net with six blocks.

The Dinos were led by Connor Frehlich and Will Young each finishing the match with 10 kills.

In the opening set the Dinos led 15-13 at the midway point. The lead did not last long as Brendan Black's two kills followed by a Calgary attacking error gave the Wesmen a 16-15 lead at the break. The Dinos kept it close until Winnipeg reeled off four straight points to carry them to a 22-17advantage. Winnipeg went on to win the set 25-21.

Winnipeg relied on several small runs in the second set to lift them to a 16-11 lead at the technical break. Calgary kept it close until the Casey Schouten show took over. The first year outside hitter had a pair of kills and three service aces during a 6-0 run to lead Winnipeg to a 25-16 win in set number two.

The Dinos got back into the match in the third set. Calgary led 16-12 at the break and later on won the third set by a tally of 25-19. Winnipeg looked to close out the match in the fourth set and they managed to do so. The Wesmen pulled away to a 16-11 lead at the technical break and closed out the match winning the set 25-19.

" I was a good all-round team performance this afternoon. Casey Schouten had a strong match serving and Thomas Douglas-Powell had a great match for us", said Wesmen head coach Larry McKay.

The Wesmen and Dinos will close out their weekend series, Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)

The hometown Calgary Dinos defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (24-26, 25-17, 25-22, 25-21) Saturday afternoon in Calgary, Alberta.

Calgary with the win improves their record to 2-3. Winnipeg remains winless with a record of 0-4.

Sarah Moncks led the Dinos with 20 kills. Courtney Dawson added 15 kills and six blocks. Ali Woodley led the team in digs with 11.

Ozana Nikolic led Winnipeg with 20 kills. Sarah Lynch added nine kills and four blocks. Carleen Kruschel finished with 11 digs. Setter Hope Schneider had 38 assists.

The hometown Dinos dominated in the early stages of set number one, jumping out to an 11-3 lead. After Calgary took a 16-10 lead into the technical timeout Winnipeg made their move. The Wesmen scored eight straight points, with Ozana Nikolic and Sarah Lynch providing three kills each to propel Winnipeg to an 18-16 advantage.The teams battled to 24-24 but soon after Winnipeg scored the final points they needed thanks to a Calgary service error and a kill by Nikolic to win the first set 26-24.

Calgary led 16-10 at the technical break in set number two. Winnipeg managed to stay close at 17-14 only to have the Dinos run the score to 21-14 and eventually went on to even the match with a 25-17 win in the set.

The third set was close affair as the Dinos carried a slim 16-15 lead at the break. Winnipeg continued to keep pace and later in the set tied the score at 19-19. The momentum was short lived with Calgary reeling off four straight points to lead 23-19. Calgary went on to win the set 25-22.

Winnipeg looking to even the match in set number four, held a 16-15 lead at the timeout and after Calgary took the lead Winnipeg showed their toughness taking the lead back at 20-19. The Dinos went in for the kill, scoring six of the last seven points to close out the match with a 25-21 win in the set number four.

" We showed growth and improvement with our overall play. Our consistency is improving and we are playing more and more as a team with each set. We are moving in the right direction amd are all on the same page to do so", added head coach Diane Scott.

The two teams will meet on Sunday afternoon to wrap up the weekend series. Match time is 1:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)
