Basketball Splits Against Regina

Women's Basketball - WESMEN 55 Regina 76
 
Fourth year guard Michelle Clark scored a game high 29 points to lead the Regina Cougars to a 76-55 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Game Statistics

Clark was on fire connecting on 11-of-16 from the field and was six-of-nine from three point territory.

Lindsay Ledingham added 12 points. Jennilea Coppola led the Cougars with a game high 16 rebounds.

Third year guard Stephanie Kleysen led the Wesmen with 15 points and nine rebounds. Lauren Anderson added 11 while Megan Noonan finished with 10, including a pair of three-pointers.

Winnipeg gained control early on in the contest, jumping out to a 20-13 lead after the opening quarter. The Cougars cut into the Wesmen lead in a tight second quarter, outscoring Winnipeg 14-8 to go into the halftime break trailing 28-27.

Regina came out of the halftime break scoring six straight points to take the lead once and for all. Clark nailed another three-pointer to give the Cougars a double digit lead at 47-34. Winnipeg made a charge late in the quarter and after a Megan Noonan basket, Winnipeg cut the Cougars lead to single digits at 52-43. Danielle Schmidt nailed a three-pointer to close out the quarter with Regina leading 55-43 after 30 minutes. The Cougars carried the play in the final quarter, outscoring the Wesmen 21-12 to make the final score 76-55.

Regina completes the two game sweep and improves their record to 3-1. Winnipeg remains winless at 0-4. Regina will host the Manitoba Bisons next Saturday and Sunday. Winnipeg will play Brandon in a home and home series beginning Thursday night in Winnipeg. The teams will play in Brandon next Saturday.




Note: The Winnipeg Wesmen paid tribute to members of the 1992-1995 University of Winnipeg Women's Basketball teams in a special half-time ceremony. The team's from those years were recently inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame this past Saturday.

The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a two-game sweep over the Regina Cougars with an impressive 92-74 victory Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Game Statistics

Winnipeg (2-2) beat Regina (1-3) in the series opener Thursday night.

Steven Wesley led the Wesmen for the second consecutive night scoring 28 points and hauling down 12 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double. Wesley had 25 points and 10 rebounds Thursday night.

Travis Krahn scored 16 points, including four-three pointers. Andrew Cunningham had 14 points and nine assists. Nolan Gooding and Jordan Clennon each scored 10.

Frank Brown led the Cougars with 19 points, including five-three pointers. Paul Gareau added 18 points and nine rebounds. Connor Burns also figured in double digits with 15.

Winnipeg started the contest jumping out to a 17-13 lead after the opening quarter and pulled away in the second quarter outscoring the Cougars 23-12 to carry a 40-25 lead into the halftime break.

The Wesmen started the second half scoring eight of the first 10 points to hold their biggest lead (21 points) 48-27. The Cougars did not roll over as they went on to score 10 straight points to cut the Wesmen lead to 48-37 with 5:34 left in the third quarter. Regina cut into the Wesmen lead even more with 2:00 left trailing 55-48 only to have Winnipeg respond to hold a 64-51 lead after three quarters. The Wesmen outscored the Cougars 28-23 in the final ten minutes to seal the 92-74 victory.

Winnipeg will play the Brandon Bobcats in a home and home series next week, starting at the Duckworth Centre next Thursday and heading to Brandon for Saturday night's contest. Regina will play the Manitoba Bisons at home.

Women's Basketball - WESMEN 60  Regina 81

The no. 3 ranked University of Regina Cougars defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 81-60 Thursday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Game Statistics

Michelle Clark led Regina with a game high 20 points. Lindsay Ledingham added 16 poits, including three-three pointers. Megan Chamberlin and Kehlsie Crone each added 10. Chamberlin hauled down 11 rebounds to complete the double-double.

First year post Lauren Anderson led the Wesmen with 11 points. Kelsey Solarchuk added nine. Stephanie Kleysen led Winnipeg on the boards with nine rebounds.

Winnipeg came out strong in the opening quarter building an 11-1 lead four minutes into the contest. The Cougars reeled off 10 straight points to knot the score at 11-11. Regina led 14-13 after the opening ten minutes. The Cougars led by back-to-back three pointers by Lindsay Ledingham went on a 14-2 run to extend their lead to 32-17 with just over three minutes to play in the opening half. Kelsey Solarchuk and Yael Kaplan scored late baskets to cut the Regina lead at 37-26 at halftime.

Regina kept the pressure on the Wesmen in the second half, outscoring Winnipeg 44-34 in the final twenty minutes to make the final tally 81-60.

The Cougars with the win improve their record to 2-1 , Winnipeg remains winless at 0-3.

The two teams will meet in the series finale Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.


Men's Basketball - WESMEN 88 Regina 73

A strong first half lifted the Winnipeg Wesmen to a regular season home opening 88-73 victory over the Regina Cougars Thursday evening at the Duckworth Centre.

Game Statistics

Winnipeg shot 58% from the field and outscored Regina 51-23 in the opening half.

Steven Wesley led Winnipeg with a double-double consisting of 25 points and 10 rebounds. Nolan Gooding and Benny Iko each scored 16, Andrew Cunningham had 14 points, eight assists and five steals.

Regina was led by Frank Brown's 18 points, including four-three pointers. Antonio Tate added 16 and Connor Burns finished with 13. Burns led the Cougars in the rebounding department with nine.

The Cougars made the game interesting in the second half chipping away ever so slowly at the Wesmen lead. Winnipeg held a comfortable double-digit lead for a better portion of the third quarter. Regina pulled to within 11 points at 62-51 after a lay-up by Antonio Tate with 58 seconds left in the third quarter. The Cougars outscored the Wesmen 28-13 in the quarter to trail 64-51 heading into the fourth quarter.

Winnipeg kept their composure and scored key baskets when they had to but the resilient Cougars once again made the game interesting cutting the Wesmen lead to 75-67 with just over four minutes to play. Winnipeg held off the charge and went on to win their home opener 88-73.

The two teams will meet Friday night at the Duckworth Centre. Tip off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
