Men's Volleyball
WESMEN def Mount Royal 3-2 (27-29,20-25,25-17,32-30,15-10)

The Winnipeg Wesmen picked up their first victory of the season and it came in dramatic fashion. Winnipeg erased a two set deficit to defeat the Mount Royal University Cougars in five sets Saturday evening at the Duckworth Centre.

Match Statistics

Mount Royal opened the match winning the first set 29-27 and followed that up with a 25-20 win in set number two. Winnipeg got themselves back in the match winning the third set by a score of 25-17, then won a dramatic fourth set by a score of 32-30 to force a fifth and deciding set.

In the fifth set Winnipeg gained the early momentum jumping out to a 7-5 lead, forcing Mount Royal to take a timeout. Winnipeg continued to carry the play and built a 13-9 lead late in the set.Winnipeg's Brendan Black and Tom Douglas-Powell put up a wall on Cougars 7'1" middle Grigor Kartev to extend their lead to 14-9. A Zach Brown made it 14-10 but Winnipeg closed out the match on a kill by setter Josh McKay to win the fifth set 15-10.

Tom Douglas-Powell led the Wesmen with a match high 22 kills. Ty Loewen had 19 kills and 12 defensive digs. Casey Schouten finished with 10 kills and a team leading 13 digs. Josh McKay had 57 assists, to go along with 10 digs and three service aces. Brendan Black led the Wesmen with five total blocks.

The Cougars were led by Colton deMan's 21 kills. Jordan Parkin added 13. Marcus Ernwein led the team with 11 defensive digs and 31 assists. Tommy Lyon had a match high eight blocks.

Winnipeg improves their record to 1-2, while Mount Royal evens their record to 2-2. Winnipeg will be on the road next Saturday and Sunday in Calgary to face the Dinos. Mount Royal will be on home court facing UBC-Okanagan.

Women's Volleyball
Mount Royal def WESMEN 3-2 (18-25, 14-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-4)

The Mount Royal University Cougars defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen in a five set affair Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Match Statistics

With the victory the Cougars complete a weekend sweep and improve their Canada West regular season record to 3-1. Winnipeg remains winless at 0-3.

A determined and focused Wesmen team opened up the match on fire, winning the opening two sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-14. The Cougars won a tough third set by a score of 25-23 and shortly after went on to win the fourth set 25-21.

The fifth set started out close but that did not last very long. After the score was tied at 2-2 early on, the Cougars scored three straight points to take a 5-2 lead. Ozana Nikolic's kill pulled the Wesmen to within a pair at 5-3 but that was as close as the Wesmen would come. The Cougars scored 10 of the next 11 points to close out the match winning the fifth set 15-4.

Carolyn O'dwyer led Mount Royal with 21 kills. Makenzie Quinn finished with 10. Fallon Middlemiss led the Cougars in digs with 24. Julia Pasieka and Mackenzie Allen served up four service aces each.

Winnipeg was led by Ozana Nikolic's match high 23 kills. Sarah Lynch finished with 14, Carleen Kruschel added 10. Kruschel was solid on the defensive side finishing with a match high 31 digs. Alicia Perry had four service aces and led the team with five blocks.

Winnipeg will be on the road next weekend in Calgary for matches on Saturday and Sunday against the Dinos. The Cougars will host UBC-Okanagan Heat
              

Women's Basketball
WESMEN 52  Lethbridge 55

The Lethbridge Pronghorns completed a regular season opening weekend sweep beating the Winnipeg Wesmen 55-52 Saturday evening in Lethbridge, Alberta.

Game Statistics

The Pronghorns beat the Wesmen in the season opener Friday evening by a score of 76-73.

Ali Cameron led Lethbridge with 16 points, including three-three pointers. Erin Skippon added 10 points.

Third year guard Yael Kaplan led the Wesmen with a game high 19 points. Alyssa Grant added nine. Stephanie Kleysen led the team with seven rebounds.

Winnipeg had things going their way in the opening quarter jumping out to a 12-4 lead early on. Lethbridge regrouped and carried the play for the remainder of the quarter, outscoring the Wesmen 10-2 in the final five minutes. The teams were squared at 14-14 after the opening quarter. The teams traded baskets in a close second quarter which saw the largest lead by either team being four points. Lethbridge outscored Winnipeg by a narrow margin of 16-15 to lead 30-29 at halftime.

The second half was a tight defensive quarter with only 22 points being scored by both teams combined. Lethbridge held a slim 40-39 lead late in the quarter until Kaplan nailed a jump shot with 1:39 left to give Winnipeg a 41-40 lead after three quarters.

Ali Cameron scored five straight points in the fourth quarter to lead Lethbridge on a 10-1 run to open up a 51-41 lead with 7:30 left in the contest. Winnipeg closed the gap to 55-50 with 1:52 left, a pair of Kaplan free-throws cut the lead to 55-52 but the Pronghorns held their ground not allowing another Wesmen point.

Winnipeg 0-2 will host the Regina Cougars next Thursday and Friday at the Duckworth Centre. Game times on both nights is 8:00 p.m.

Men's Basketball
WESMEN 78 
Lethbridge 95

A rough start, combined with a hot shooting team hurt the Wesmen on this night. The Lethbridge Pronghorns defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 95-78 Saturday night in Lethbridge, Alberta. The Pronghorns won the opening game of the weekend on Friday by a score of 84-81.

Game Statistics

Morgan Duce led the way for Lethbridge scoring a game high 26 points, including three-three pointers. Derek Waldner added 14 points and a game high nine rebounds.

Winnipeg was led by Steven Wesley's 16 points. Travis Krahn finished with 15 points, all coming on three pointers. Sam Hattin had 13 while Benny Iko had 10. Iko led the team with four rebounds.

Lethbridge shot the lights out in the opening half, connecting on 18-of-28 (64%) of their shots from the field. Winnipeg struggled in the opening twenty minutes connecting on 10-of-31 (32%) from the field. The hometown Pronghorns went into the halftime break leading 47-30.

Winnipeg outscored Lethbridge 26-20 in the third quarter and managed to chip away at the lead, trailing 67-56 heading into the final ten minutes. The Wesmen started the fourth quarter on a positive note. Nolan Gooding scored a two pointer and on the next trip down the floor Travis Krahn buried a three-pointer to cut the Pronhorns lead to 67-61. Lethbridge once again built up a double-digit lead a few moments later but on three occasions Winnipeg managed to cut the lead down to nine points with the latest being 84-75 with just under three minutes to play. Lethbridge would eventually end the game on a 11-3 run to make the final score 95-78.

Winnipeg will host the Regina Cougars in their regular season home opener next Thursday and Friday at the Duckworth Centre. Game time on both nights is 8:00 p.m.
