Women's Volleyball
Mount Royal def WESMEN 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-20)
The Mount Royal University Cougars picked up their second win of the regular season with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-20) victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Match Statistics
The Cougars (2-1) were led by first year left side Carolyn O'dwyer's match high 12 kills and 14 defensive digs. Fourth year left side Olivia Grecu had eight kills and was in on four blocks. Fourth year libero Tayler Smith finished with 12 digs. Third year left side Fallon Middlemiss had a strong serving match with four service aces.
Second year left side Ozana Nikolic led Winnipeg (0-2) with 10 kills. Fourth year left side Carleen Kruschel added seven kills and 10 digs. First year libero Alyssa Kidd had 12 digs and first year middle Sarah Lynch finished with three blocks.
The Cougars had the upper hand at the beginning of the opening set leading 16-12 at the technical timeout. Sarah Lynch came thru with a kill after the timeout to close the gap to 16-13. The remainder of the set belonged to Mount Royal, outscoring the Wesmen 9-1 down the stretch to win the first set 25-14. Winnipeg committed nine attacking errors in the set. The Cougars had two and finished with an attack percentage of .400.
In set number two, the Cougars rolled out to a comfortable 16-9 lead at the technical timeout and extended their lead to double-digits at 20-10 soon after. Winnipeg went on a mini run late in the set but Mount Royal went on to take set number two 25-18.
Winnipeg found some life in the third set. Several serving errors by the Cougars allowed the Wesmen to grab their first lead of the match at 14-13. The Wesmen would score two more points to lead 16-13 at the technical break. Winnipeg was looking to get back into the match and went to Ozana Nikolic several times, but the Cougars put up a pair of blocks to keep the set tied at 19-19. The Cougars closed out the match on a 6-1 run to win the third set 25-20.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in the late match of the evening. Match time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Men's Volleyball
Mount Royal def WESMEN 3-2(25-20,25-23,18-25,19-25,18-16)
The Mount Royal University Cougars held off a charge by the home team. The Cougars held on to defeat the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-2 (25-20, 25-23, 18-25, 19-25, 18-16) Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre.
Match Statistics
The visiting Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match only to see the Wesmen win sets three and four to force a fifth and deciding set.
The victory improves the Royals record to 2-1.Winnipeg sits with a record of 0-2.
Fourth year left side Colton deMan led the Cougars with 14 kills. Second year right side Jordan Parkin had 12. Second year libero Colton Smethurst led the Cougars with 11 digs. First year setter Marcus Ernewein had 34 assists and four solo blocks.
Four Wesmen players figured in double digits in the kills department, led by first year opposite Casey Schouten with 14. Tom Douglas- Powell had 13. Matthew Stubler and Brendan Black, in their fourth and third years respectively each had 10. Second year libero Riley Delavau led the team with 14 digs. Kenny McKenzie and Brendan Black each had three blocks. Setter Josh McKay had 45 assists.
The Cougars looked to have the match in their hands winning the first set 25-20 and a tough second set 25-23. The resilient Wesmen team found their groove in the third set winning 25-18 and followed that up with a 25-19 win in the fourth set to send the match to a fifth and deciding set.
Winnipeg looked to be in control late in the deciding set holding a 11-8 lead. The Cougars fought back reeling off three straight points to knot the score at 11-11. After the teams were tied at 12-12, the Wesmen scored two points in a row to have match point at 14-12. Colton deMan had back-to-back kills to tie the score at 14-14 and soon after the teams were deadlocked at 16-16. The Cougars prevailed scoring the final two points to make the score in an exciting fifth set 18-16 in their favor.
Both teams finished with five service aces each. The Cougars had the edge in blocking by a margin of 16-10 (10-8 in solo blocks).
The two teams will wrap up their weekend series Saturday evening. Match time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
Women's Basketball
WESMEN 73 Lethbridge 76
The Winnipeg Wesmen opened up the 2012-2013 regular season with a close 76-73 road loss against the Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday evening in Lethbridge, Alberta.
Game Statistics
Ali Cameron led the Pronghorns with 22 points and guard Kim Veldman had 21. Fifth-year small forward Stephanie Inman added 12.
Winnipeg was led by third year guard Yael Kaplan, who scored a game high 23 points. Tia Coulter added 14 while first year post Lauren Anderson finished with 11.
Winnipeg shot the lights out in the first half connecting on 55% of their shots from the field. The shooting display lifted the Wesmen to a 20-17 lead after the opening quarter and 42-31 at the halftime break.
The Pronghorns made their move in the third quarter and pulled even with eight and a half minutes to play. Lethbridge pulled ahead with an Inman layup which she followed up with a three from the corner. The Pronghorns then traded baskets with the Wesmen until Cameron drained a three to put the home team up 61-59. The Wesmen refused to fold, however, and with 1:30 to play, the score was tied at 68-68. The Pronghorns held off the Wesmen late in the fourth quarter to come away with the victory.
The rematch will take place Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)
Men's Basketball -
WESMEN 81 Lethbridge 84
The Lethbridge Pronghorns defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 84-81 Friday evening in the Canada West regular season opener for both teams in Lethbridge, Alberta.
Game Statistics
Derek Waldner registered a double-double 29 points and 10 rebounds to lead Lethbridge. Niko Kovac added 14 while Logan Reiter finished with 13.
Travis Krahn led the Wesmen with 18 points, including four-three pointers. Nolan Gooding had an all-round good game consisting of 14 points, six rebounds, three assists and four steals. Dominique Brown had 11 points while Jordan Clennon added 10.
The first half was a dead-even, back and fourth affair. Lethbridge outscored Winnipeg 20-17 in the opening 10 minutes only to see Winnipeg have the advantage in the second quarter outscoring the Pronghorns by a slim 19-18 margin. The home-town Pronghorns went into the halftime break leading 38-36.
Lethbridge was 16-of-31 (52%) from the field in the opening half. Winnipeg shot 43%, but connected on six-three pointers in the opening 20 minutes.
After the halftime break, Lethbridge came out strong and opened up some breathing room outscoring the Wesmen by a 26-16 margin to open up a 64-52 lead after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter Winnipeg exploded right out of the gate going on a 13-2 run to cut the deficit to a single point at 66-65.The teams exchanged buckets and Lethbridge held on on to a 71-70 lead with five minutes left to play. Winnipeg continued to stay close but eventually ran out of time in a 84-81 decision.
The two teams will meet on Saturday night at 9:00 p.m. to wrap up the opening weekend series.
