Wesmen Fall To Manitoba In Regular Season Opener

Match Statistics

The #5 ranked Manitoba Bisons opened up the opening night of the 2012-2013 Canada West regular season schedule with a 3-0 (27-25, 25-19, 25-17) victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Thursday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Second year right side Crystal Mulder led Manitoba with 13 kills and 16 defensive digs. Second year left/right side Rachel Cockrell had nine kills to go along with 14 digs. Setter Christine Souza had 32 assists and a pair of service aces.

Winnipeg was by second year left side Ozana Nikolic's match high 16 kills and 18 defensive digs. Fourth year left side and team captain Carleen Kruschel had six kills and 10 defensive digs. Setter Hope Schneider playing in her first CIS regular season match had 24 assists.

The match started out on the right foot for the hometown Wesmen, jumping out to a 16-11 lead at the technical timeout of the opening set. Manitoba used a pair of time outs late in the set but Winnipeg held on to a 21-18 lead. The Bisons clawed their way back into match, and evened the score in the set to 24-24. A kill by Nikolic gave the Wesmen set point at 25-24 until a Danika Picklyk kill evened the set at 25-25. Manitoba scored the final two points, one on a Wesmen attacking error followed by a service ace by Emily Erickson to make the score 27-25 for Manitoba.

In set number two, Winnipeg once again led at the technical timeout by a score at 16-13. The Bisons went on a 6-0 run, led by a trio of kills by Mulder to jump ahead 19-16. Winnipeg closed the gap to 19-18 but the Bisons took control scoring six of the last seven points to take the second set by a score of 25-19.

Manitoba used their momentum in the third set to build a 16-9 lead at the technical timeout and continued to put the pressure on the Wesmen for the remainder of the set. The Bisons closed out the match winning the third set 25-17.

Manitoba (1-0) will host the Calgary Dinos next Thursday and Friday. Winnipeg (0-1) will take on the Mount Royal Cougars at the Duckworth Centre next Friday and Saturday.

In another chapter to a heated rivalry, the #5 ranked Manitoba Bisons defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-15) in the opening night of the 2012-2013 Canada West regular season Thursday evening at the Duckworth Centre.

Fifth year left side Chris Voth led Manitoba with 11 kills. First year middle blocker Kevin Rooney finished with six kills and three blocks. Fifth year middle Joseph Brooks came up strong for Manitoba at the net finishing with eight blocks, including three solo.

First year opposite Casey Schouten led the Wesmen with 11 kills. Thomas Douglas-Powell had eight kills to go along with his eight defensive digs. Setter Josh McKay had 31 assists and seven digs.

The cross-town rivals had a battle going in the opening set. Manitoba jumped out to a 16-12 lead at the technical break and maintained their four point advantage to 18-14 late in the set. Winnipeg made a charge, scoring three straight points to close the gap to 18-17. The teams matched one another point for point to 23-23. The Bisons got a big kill from Voth followed by a big block by Brooks and Rooney to win the opening set 25-23. Both teams attacked very well in the opening set with Manitoba edging the Wesmen by a slim margin of .435 to .423.

In the second set the Bisons jumped out to a 16-13 lead and never looked back. Manitoba outscored Winnipeg 9-6 down the stretch to win the set by a score of 25-19. Manitoba continued their impressive attacking finishing the set with a percentage of .400, with only one error.

Winnipeg stayed close in the third set trailing by a slim 9-7 margin but Manitoba reeled off five straight points to extend their lead to 14-7. The Bisons continued to lead for the remainder of the set as the deficit was too much for the Wesmen to make up. The Bisons won the third set 25-15.

Manitoba (1-0) will be on home court next week facing the Calgary Dinos. The Wesmen (0-1) will host the Mount Royal Cougars next Friday and Saturday.
