LAURENTIAN DOWN WESMEN IN TOURNEY OPENER

The Laurentian Voyageurs opened the 2009 Pembina Chrysler Invitational on a winning note defeating the host Winnipeg Wesmen 78-71 Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Second year guard Isiah Pasquale poured in a game high 30 points, including eight-three pointers to lead the Voyageurs. Matas Tirilis added 18 points and eight rebounds. Manny Pasquale finished with 12 points and four assists.

The Wesmen were led by fourth year guard Nick Lother's 25 points and five steals. Peter Lomuro added 18 points. Ryan Willerton had eight points and two blocks.

Laurentian gained the upper hand early on leading 17-13 after a tight defensive opening quarter of play. The Voyageurs were able to extend their lead in the second quarter outscoring the Wesmen 25-18 to take a 42-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Winnipeg came out of the halftime break on fire. Led by Lomuro's eight points in the first three minutes, the Wesmen went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to 44-41. Laurentian did not seem to panic as they went on a 10-0 run to open up a 54-41 lead late in the quarter. The Voyageurs led 62-47 after three quarters.

In the final quarter, Winnipeg rattled off seven straight points to cut the lead to 62-54 but Laurentian was able to match the Wesmen basket for basket down the stretch to secure the victory.

Laurentian will face Manitoba Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.. Winnipeg will face Concordia at 6:00 p.m.

WESMEN 44  Saskatchewan 61

WESMEN STRUGGLE IN LOSS TO HUSKIES

The Winnipeg Wesmen struggled in the opening game of the University of Manitoba Invitational Tournament Friday night. The Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the Wesmen 61-44.

Winnipeg struggled from the field connecting on 22% of their shots in the game.

After a close first half with the Huskies leading 27-24, Winnipeg could only manage to score 20 second half points as Saskatchewan outscored the Wesmen 34-20 to break the game open.

Catie Gooch led Winnipeg with 12 points. Amy Ogidan added nine points and 10 rebounds. Jessica Stromberg, in her first game of the season had seven points.

Winnipeg will face the Manitoba Bisons Saturday night at 6:00 p.m.


Women's Volleyball @ UBC "Regular Season Begins"

UBC def WESMEN 3-0 (25-20, 25-10, 25-15)

UBC BEAT WESMEN IN REGULAR SEASON OPENER

The defending CIS champions, UBC Thunderbirds defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-20, 25-10, 25-15) Friday night in Vancouver in the opening regular season match for both teams.

First year left side Carleen Kruschel led the Wesmen with six kills and five defensive digs. Third year middle Lauren Sears added five kills and two blocks.

" It was a good match overall. As a group we competed but a few rounds of poor rallies were our downfall", added Wesmen Head Coach Diane Scott.

The same two squads will be back at War Memorial Gym on Saturday night to wrap up the series. Match two begins at 8:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)

WESMEN def UBC 3-1 (27-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-19)

FIRST SET COMEBACK PROPELS WESMEN TO VICTORY

The Winnipeg Wesmen used a first set comeback to propel them to a 3-1 victory over the UBC Thunderbirds in the opening match of the regular season Friday night in Vancouver.

UBC led 24-18 in the first set before the Wesmen rallied to tie it at 24-24, a kill by UBC put them up 25-24,  but the Wesmen were able to survive a long rally on the next point, evening the score after a UBC error. Andrew Town put the Wesmen up 26-25 with a kill on the next point, and then won the set for his side with an emphatic kill after another long rally.

The second set was a back-and-forth affair, with neither side leading by more than two points at any time. UBC tied the score at 23 and seemed to be building momentum, but Justin Duff came up with a monster kill to put the Wesmen up 24-23. Matt Schreimer went right through the UBC block on the next point to put Winnipeg up 2-0.

UBC rallied in the third set winning 25-21 but in the fourth set the Wesmen jumped out to an 11-3 lead and would go on to close out the match with a 25-     win in the foourth set.

"The comeback in the first set was the key in this match", noted Wesmen Head Coach Larry McKay.

Andrew Town finished with a match-high 22 kills to go along with 14 digs. Matt Schreimer had 15 kills and Justin Duff had an impressive outing with 14 kills on .591 hitting.

The two teams will meet Saturday night 10:00 p.m. (Wpg Time) to close out the series.

Men's Basketball vs Concordia "Pembina Chrysler Invitational"

STINGERS COME BACK TO DOWN WESMEN

The Concordia University Stingers erased a 15 point deficit after three quarters to defeat the Winnipeg Wesmen 80-71 Saturday night at the Pembina Chrysler Invitational Tournament at the Duckworth Centre.

The Stingers trailed 65-50 after three quarters but outscored the Wesmen 30-6 in the final quarter to complete the comeback.

Decee Krah scored a game high 21 points, including four-of-five from three point territory to lead the Stingers.  Hamza Ruhezamihigo finished with a double-double 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Peter Lomuro led the Wesmen with 17 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Nick Lother finished with 14 points and five assists. Ben Kingdon led Winnipeg on the boards with 10.

The Wesmen took control of the game early on building a 21-14 lead after the opening ten minutes of play. The teams played a tight defensive second quarter with the Stingers outscoring the Wesmen 20-18 to cut the Wesmen lead to 39-34 at the halftime break.

Winnipeg came out firing on all cylinders in the third quarter outscoring the Stingers 26-16 and managed to extend their lead to 65-50 after three quarters.

Concordia finishes the two day tournament with a perfect 2-0 record. Winnipeg ends the tournament with an 0-2 record.

The Wesmen will now prepare to open up the 2009-2010 regular season next week in Calgary against the Dinos on Friday and Saturday.

Women's Basketball vs Manitoba "University of Manitoba Invitational"

WESMEN REBOUND TO BEAT MANITOBA

The Winnipeg Wesmen rebounded from a shaky performance last night and were able to regroup downing the Manitoba Bisons 62-58 at the University of Manitoba Invitational Tournament Saturday night.

Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with a game high 19 points. Ogidan also added nine rebounds and four steals. Kaitlin Rempel had a strong game finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Lauren Mortier led the Bisons with 18 points. Kayla Klassen added 10 points.

Manitoba led 20-18 after the opening quarter and after a tigh second quarter opened up a 31-28 lead at halftime.

The third quarter was once again a defensive battle with the Wesmen outscoring Manitoba 14-12 to trail 43-42 heading in to the final quarter.

The fourth quarter saw the Wesmen take control as they took the lead and led by as much seven going down the stretch. Manitoba closed the gap to a single point at 59-58 with 24 seconds left but Winnipeg drained three-of-four foul shots to clinch the win.

Winnipeg will close out the tournament and their pre-season schedule Sunday afternoon against the Toronto Varsity Blues.

UBC def WESMEN 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-18)

T-BIRDS COMPLETE WEEKEND SWEEP OVER WESMEN

The UBC Thunderbirds completed a weekend sweep defeating the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-18) Saturday evening in Vancouver.

The T-Birds opened up the weekend series with a 3-0 victory on Friday night.

Shanice Marcelle led UBC with nine kills and 10 defensive digs. Liz Cordonier also added 10 digs. Jessiva von Schilling finished the match with six blocks.

Ariel Smith, Sonia Rossy and Lauren Sears each had six kills to lead the Wesmen. Carleen Kruschel finished with 14 defensive digs. Rossy and Sears each added two blocks.

UBC dominated the opening set building leads of 8-4 and 16-8 at the technical timeouts. The T-Birds would go on to take the opening set by a score of 25-13.

Set number two was a carbon copy of the opening set with the home team opening up an 8-2 lead at the first timeout and exopanding their lead to 16-8 at the second break. UBC went on to win the second set 25-14.

Winnipeg was more competitive in set number three trailing 8-6 at the first technical, but UBC went on a 8-3 run to lead 16-9 at the second technical timeout. The T-Birds closed out the match winning the third set 25-18.

The Wesmen (0-2) will have the bye in the schedule next week. The team will see it's next action on Fri-Sat Nov. 6-7 when they travel to Edmonton to take on the Alberta Pandas.

UBC def WESMEN 3-2 (25-19, 20-25, 26-28, 25-18, 15-12)

T-BIRDS DOWN WESMEN IN FIVE SET THRILLER

The UBC Thunderbirds defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-2 (25-19, 20-25, 26-28, 25-18, 15-12) in a five set thriller Saturday night in Vancouver.

The T-Birds came back from a  2-1 set deficit to win the final pair of sets to close out the match that lasted just over two hours.

Justin Duff had a strong match for the Wesmen in a losing cause finishing with 19 kills, three blocks and a pair of service aces. First year player Matt Schriemer had another impressive outing with 17 kills. Andrew Town had a team high 12 defensive digs.

The Wesmen (1-1) early on in the regular season will have the bye next week before taking on the defending CIS champions Alberta Golden Bears in a two match series in Edmonton on November 6 and 7.

WESMEN EDGE TORONTO IN PRE SEASON FINALE

The Winnipeg Wesmen ended their pre season on a winning note edging the Toronto Varsity Blues 68-67 at the University of Manitoba Invitational Sunday afternoon.

Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Jessica Stromberg had an all-round great game finishing with 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. Catie Gooch also had 12 points while dishing out a team high seven assists.

Former Wesmen Nicki Schutz scored 17 points to lead the Varsity Blues.

Both teams struggled connecting on their shots in the first half with both shooting less than 25% from the field. Toronto went into the halftime lead leading 31-27.

In the third quarter both teams exchanged baskets and after all was said and done the Blues held on to the lead at 51-50 after 30 minutes of play.

Catie Gooch drained a pair of three pointers in the final 1:50 to put the Wesmen ahead for the remainder of the game.

Winnipeg will open up the regular season on the road next Friday and Saturday against the Calgary Dinos.
