The
Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-14,25-22,25-20) in
the final match of the lea Marc Volleyball Challenge Sunday afternoon at the
Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Toronto with the win finishes the three day event with a perfect 5-0 record.
Winnipeg finishes with a record of 3-2.
Varsity Blues team captain Shannon Rossall was named the recepient of the Nikki
Redekopp Award as the Tournament Most Valuable Player (selected by competing
coaches).
In the opening set Toronto gained the early advantage leading 16-8 at the
technical timeout and never looked back winning the set 25-14.
Winnipeg regrouped in the early stages of the second set and carried the play
to a 16-8 lead at the technical timeout. Toronto mounted a comeback and
outscored the Wesmen 17-6 to win the second set 25-22.
Both teams battled in the third set with Toronto holding a slim 16-15 lead at
the technical timeout. The Varsity Blues got some breathing room, outscoring
the Wesmen 9-5 to win the third set 25-20.

WVB - WESMEN def Queen's 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-17)
The Winnipeg Wesmen kept their perfect record intact with a straight sets 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-17) victory over the Queen's Gaels Saturday afternoon at the 2012 lea Marc Volleyball Challenge.
Winnipeg (3-0) jumped out to a 16-8 lead at the technical timeout of the opening set. The Wesmen took advantage of several unforced errors by the Gaels to win the first set 25-22.
In set number two, the Wesmen once again gained the early advantage taking a 16-12 lead at the break. The Wesmen went on to win the second set by an identical score of 25-22.
The Wesmen once again had complete control in the third set leading 16-13 at the technical and outscored the Gaels 9-4 down the stretch to close out the match with a 25-17 win in the third set.
Winnipeg will face the Manitoba Bisons in the evening match scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
MVB - Saskatchewan def WESMEN 3-0 (31-29, 25-17, 25-13)
The Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (31-29, 25-17, 25-13) in non-conference play at the lea Marc Volleyball Challenge Saturday afternoon in Winnipeg.
The match started out a close affair with Winnipeg holding a 16-14 lead at the first technical timeout. Both teams continued to battle and exchange points to 29-29 when the Huskies scored the next two points to win the set 31-29.
The Huskies seemed to be inspired by their opening set win and won the next two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-13.
Winnipeg will take on the Huskies in the final match of the evening. Match time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The Manitoba Bisons defeated the previously unbeaten Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-21) Saturday evening at the lea Marc Volleyball Challenge held at the Duckworth Centre.
Winnipeg (3-1) will face Toronto (4-0) on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. The winner will be declared the winner of the 2012 lea Marc Volleyball Challenge.
Manitoba started the opening set racing out to a quick 11-6 lead and held onto the lead at 16-10 at the first technical timeout. Manitoba eventually went on to win the set 25-16.
In the second set, Manitoba once again held the lead at the technical timeout, this time by a slim 16-13 margin. Winnipeg managed to close the gap to 17-15 right after the break only to see the Bisons score four straight points to take a 21-15 lead. Manitoba won the second set 25-17.
Winnipeg started the third set leading 10-7 but the Manitoba reeled off five straight points to take the lead at 12-10 and headed into the set break leading 16-15. Winnipeg continued to keep pace with their rivals keeping the score close at 22-21 late in the set. Manitoba scored three straight points to win the third set 25-21.
Winnipeg (3-1) will face the Toronto Varsity Blues (4-0) Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
MVB - Sask def WESMEN 3-2 (36-38,25-21,25-21,22-25,15-9)
The Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen in a five set thriller Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
In an eventful first set that took 34 minutes to play the Wesmen beat the Huskies 38-36. Saskatchewan came back to win sets two and three by identical scores of 25-21, to take a 2-1 lead in games.
The Wesmen recovered in the fourth set and beat the Huskies 25-22 to force a fifth and deciding set. Saskatchewan ended the match winning the fifth set by a score of 15-9.
The five set marathon took over two hours to be completed.

The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Acadia Axewomen 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-11) in their opening match of the 2012 lea Marc Volleyball Challenge Friday morning at the Duckworth Centre.
The Wesmen had a slow start to the match, struggling in the early portion of the opening set but eventually settled down to win the set 25-22.
In the second and third sets the Wesmen would not be denied or threatened winning the middle set 25-15 and dominated the third set by a score of 25-11.
Winnipeg will face Mount Royal in the evening match at 6:00 p.m.

The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a perfect opening day of the 2012 lea Marc Volleyball Challenge with a 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 25-21, 25-17) victory over the Mount Royal University Cougars Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.
Winnipeg opened the tournament with a straight sets victory over Acadia earlier in the day.
The Cougars jumped out to an early 10-4 lead in the opening set but Winnipeg responded led by the power of Ozana Nikolic to take a 16-15 lead at the technical timeout. Winnipeg outscored the Cougars 9-3 down the stretch to win the set 25-18.
In the second set, Mount Royal fought back from trailing 16-15 at the set break to even the match winning the set by a score of 25-20.
The Wesmen carried the play for the remainder of the match winning the third set 25-21 and closed out the fourth set winning by a score of 25-17.
Winnipeg (2-0) will play Queen's (1-1) Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. followed by a match later in the evening against the Manitoba Bisons.
MVB - Brandon def WESMEN 3-1 (25-14, 25-20, 24-26, 25-21)
The Brandon University Bobcats defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (25-14, 25-20, 24-26, 25-21) in pre-season action at the lea Marc Volleyball Challenge Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Brandon held the lead at the technical timeout of the opening, 16-10 and continued to put the pressure on Winnipeg eventually winning the set 25-14.
Winnipeg put up a better fight in the second set, trailing by one 16-15 at the technical timeout. Brandon made some adjustments to their game and went on to outscore Winnipeg 9-5 to win the second set 25-20.
The Wesmen used their momentum in the third set. After trailing early on, Winnipeg fought back late in the set and got themselves back in the match winning the set by a score of 26-24.
In the fourth set, both teams exchanged points early and often but Brandon got some breathing room late in the set and completed the match with a 25-21 win in the fourth set.
Winnipeg will play two matches on Saturday, both against the Saskatchewan Huskies. First match at 12:00 p.m. The second match will take place at 7:30 p.m.

Men's Volleyball - Manitoba def WESMEN 3-2 (26-24,25-23,22-25,22-25,15-9)
The Manitoba Bisons defeated a resilient Winnipeg Wesmen team 3-2 (26-24,25-23,22-25,22-25,15-9) Thursday evening in a non-conference match at the 2012 lea marc Volleyball Challenge held at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The Bisons jumped out to a 2-0 sets lead but Winnipeg rebounded winning the next two to force a deciding fifth set.
A close opening set had Winnipeg leading 16-15 at the technical timeout. Winnipeg jumped out to a 22-18 lead until Manitoba went on a 5-1 run to tie the score at 23-23. The Bisons went on to win the set 26-24.
In the second set the Wesmen surged out to a 16-12 lead at the break only to see Manitoba fight back to overtake the lead late in the set. The Bisons won the second set 25-23.
Manitoba started strong in the third set leading 9-3 but Winnipeg gained momentum outscoring the Bisons 13-6 to grab a 16-15 lead at the break. The Wesmen carried the play from this point forward to win the third set 25-22.
In set number four Winnipeg once again had a 16-15 lead at the break and continued to lead the set. Winnipeg won the set 25-22 to force the fifth and deciding set.
Manitoba recovered in the final set leading 8-6 as the teams changed sides and eventually won the match winning the fifth set 15-9.
