The No. 3 ranked Trinity Western University Spartans defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 6-0 Sunday afternoon at Memorial Soccer Field in Winnipeg.
The win moves the Spartans to 5-0-0, while the loss drops the Wesmen to 0-5-1.
It took the Spartans until the 33rd minute to find the back of the Wesmen net when third year midfielder Jessica King gave the visitors the 1-0 lead. Fourth year midfielder Tessa Meyer followed the goal up four minutes later with two goals in two minutes, 37th, 39th, to break the game open and give the Spartans a 3-0 lead after the first half.
Trinity Western rookie forward Krista Gommeringer scored in the 67th minute to extend the Spartan lead to 4-0. Fellow rookie midfielder Stephanie Chin scored three minutes later to put TWU up 5-0 with 21 minutes remaining in the match. Alicia Tesan scored the final goal of the match in the 88th minute to make the final score 6-0.
The Spartans controlled the game from the start as they outshot Winnipeg 25-3 in total shots and 17-3 in shots on net. Trinity Western goal keeper Kristen Funk made three saves, while Winnipegs Kim Gudmandson made 11 stops in the Wesmen loss.
Trinity Western will be at home next week against Regina and Saskatchewan. Winnipeg will head west to face Victoria and Fraser Valley.

WESMEN 0 Alberta 5 Match Statistics
The #1 ranked Alberta Golden Bears completed a weekend sweep with a 5-0 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Sunday afternoon in Winnipeg.
Alberta (5-0) won the series opener on Saturday beating Winnipeg (2-3-1) by a score of 4-0.
Third year striker Marcus Johnstone scored three goals to lead the Golden Bears. Mohamed Teilani and Jonah Feil added singles.
The match started out with both teams being cautious and it was evident as the first shot on goal did not come till the 18th minute of the match. Winnipeg had a glorious chance to open the scoring. Krzysztof Szulc put a perfect pass into the Alberta goal area but Richie Rundle’s header was saved by Alberta goalkeeper Jay Vetsch.
Alberta opened the scoring in the 39th minute as Johnstone took a perfect pass from Cameron Schmidt and beat Wesmen goalkeeper Tyson Farago with a shot just inside the right post.
The Golden Bears struck again in the 43rd minute with Johnstone scoring his second goal of the half to give Alberta a 2-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
Johnstone completed his hat trick at the 47th minute on another feed from Schmidt to give the Golden Bears a 3-0 lead. Mohamed Teilani scored in the 80th minute and Jonah Feil wrapped up the scoring in the 89th minute.
Alberta had 20 total shots. Winnipeg had seven. Wesmen goalkeeper Tyson Farago made six saves. Jay Vetsch stopped five shots for Alberta.
Alberta will host Victoria and Fraser Valley next weekend. Winnipeg will play host to Trinity Western on Saturday followed by a match against UBC on Sunday.

WESMEN 0 Alberta 3 Match Statistics
Fourth year midfielder Zenon Markevych (Edmonton, AB) scored all three goals to lead the #1 ranked Alberta Golden Bears to a 3-0 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Alberta remains perfect on the season with a record of 4-0. Winnipeg falls to .500 at 2-2-1.
The Golden Bears opened the scoring in the 9th minute of play with Markevych taking a pass from Mohamed Teliani and buried a shot past Wesmen goalkeeper Tyson Farago.
Winnipeg had some scoring chances soon with Kenny Sacramento (Winnipeg, MB) just sailing a shot wide of the far post. Captain Adam Bromley launched a curving kick towards the Alberta goal but goalkeeper Jay Vetsch came up with the save.
Markevych scored his second goal of the match in the 35th minute. Marcus Johnstone directed a shot towards the Winnipeg goal and Markevych launched himself above the defenders and headed the ball past Farago to extend the Alberta lead to 2-0.
In the second half Winnipeg kept pressing for a goal and Alberta stepped up their defensive play all the way to the 78th minute when Markevych completed his gat trick with an unassisted goal to make the score 3-0.
Alberta had 16 total shots in the contest, Winnipeg had 10. Alberta goalkeeper Jay Vetsch made six saves, Wesmen goalkeeper Tyson Farago made five saves.
The two teams will wrap up their weekend series Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
Women's Soccer vs UBC
WESMEN 0 UBC 4 Match Statistics
The University of British Columbia Thunderbirds scored three goals in the second half to propel them to a 4-0 victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday evening at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex.
UBC went into the half -time break clinging to a 1-0 lead but broke the match wide open with three goals in a 25 minute span in the second half.
The victory improves UBCs record to 3-1, Winnipeg sees their record fall to 0-4-1.
Fifth year defender Kelly Cook (Maple Ridge, BC) opened the scoring in the 41st minute sneaking the ball just over the goal line to make the score 1-0 heading into the break.
The teams came out of the halftime break battling one another for field position in the windy conditions. The T-Birds were able to extend the lead in the 62nd minute to 2-0 on a goal from fourth year forward Rachel Sawer (North Vancouver, BC) who took a pass from Taylor Shannik and buried a shot past the outstretched arm of Wesmen goalkeeper Kim Gudmandson.
UBC kept the pressure on the Wesmen and found the back of the net in the 84th minute on a bullet shot by Rachael Ramsden (Richmond, BC) to increase the T-Bird lead to 3-0. Ramsden scored her second goal of the match in the 87th minute to close out the scoring.
UBC had 21 total shots, compared to three for the Wesmen. UBC goalkeeper Alyssa Williamson stopped two shots that came her way, Gudmandson made three saves for the Wesmen.
Winnipeg will play host to the #3 ranked Trinity Western University Spartans Sunday afternoon. UBC will play the Manitoba Bisons.
