The University of Regina Cougars defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 5-0 on Sunday afternoon in a Canada West match in Regina Saskatchewan.

The win improves Regina’s conference record to 3-0-0, Winnipeg's record sits at 0-3-1.

Michelle Cormier led the way for the Cougars scoring four goals. Tayler Firth added a single marker.

It took the Cougars less than six minutes to get on the board, as Cormier sent a nice through ball to Tayler Firth behind the Winnipeg defence. Firth was able to finish, notching her first of the season and giving the home side an early 1-0 advantage. Cormier put the Cougars up by two after some nice dribbling from about 25 yards out set up an open shot, which she drilled into the left side of the net to put the Cougars up 2-0 heading into halftime.

Cormier scored her second of the game shortly following halftime, as she pounced on a failed Winnipeg clearing attempt and tucked it by Wesmen keeper Ainslie McConkey. She then scored her third of the contest in the 68th minute, firing a shot that deflected off the bottom of the cross bar and in after a scramble following a corner kick.

Cormier’s fourth of the contest came in injury time, as she found the far corner of the net on a free kick from about 22 yards out.

Kacey McFee had a four-save shutout for the Cougars. Wesmen goalkeeper Ainslie McConkey made seven saves for Winnipeg, which was led by Kayla Jacobsen’s four shot attempts.

Winnipeg had 19 shot attempts to Regina’s 18 and also had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

The Wesmen will be at home next weekend to face UBC on Saturday, followed by a match against Trinity Western on Sunday.

Women's Soccer at Saskatchewan

WESMEN 1  Saskatchewan 6        Match Statistics

The Saskatchewan Huskies scored three goals in 11 minutes en route to a 6-1 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday afternoon in Canada West regular season action in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan led the match 2-0 entering the second half but broke the match open with goals in the 55th, 59th and 66th minutes. Winnipeg also tallied in the time period in the 61st minute.

In the match, rookie striker Erica Hindmarsh and captain Leanne Mylymok each found the net twice. Both also added an assist in the match.

Winnipeg tallied in the 61st minute after two straight corner kicks by team captain Stephanee Ophey led to the goal. Chelsea Kwasnicki was able to send the ball over Huskie keeper Marissa Struik.

The win improves the Huskies record to 1-1 in the young Canada West season, while Winnipeg falls to 0-2-1.

Lindsay Manz (2nd minute) and Daniela Fuenzalida (90th minute) also scored for the Huskies.

Ainslie McConkey made 12 saves in the match for the Wesmen, while Struik made two in the win for the Huskies.

Winnipeg will travel to meet the University of Regina Cougars on Sunday afternoon. Match time is 1:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)

The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend over Mount Royal defeating the Cougars 2-0 Sunday afternoon in Calgary.

Winnipeg won the opening match of the weekend series Saturday afternoon defeating the Cougars 3-0.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 2-1-1 on the year. The Cougars fall to 0-4-0.

Ross Pinhammer and Richard Rundle added their second goals of the weekend and season in securing the win.

Goaltender Joshua Partaker earned his first win of 2012 in goal for the Wesmen, while David Thalheimer took the loss for MRU.

Winnipeg will play host to the University of Alberta Golden Bears this coming Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Match time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

The Winnipeg Wesmen Men's Soccer team made history today. Winnipeg defeated the Mount Royal Cougars 3-0  Saturday afternoon in Calgary to pick up their first ever CIS regular season victory.

Winnipeg did all their scoring in the opening half with Richard Rundle, Ross Pinhammer and Kenny Sacramento each scoring in the opening 45 minutes.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 1-1-1 while the Cougars remain winless at 0-3.Wesmen goalkeeper Tyson Farago made 10 saves while Kamil Zielinski stopped six shots for the Cougars.

Winnipeg opened the scoring in the 10th minute on a goal from Richard Rundle as he snuck behind the Cougars defence and poked the ball past first-year goalkeeper Kamil Zielinski to make it 1-0.

Ross Pinhammer beat Zielinski in the 23rd minute when he pounced on a rebound after Zielinski made an initial stop on a shot that originated on a corner kick to extend the Wesmen lead to 2-0.

Sacramento's goal came in the 43rd minute on an impressive individual effort as he took a pass on the run just over midfield, beat a Cougars defender and directed the ball inside the left post.

The Cougars put pressure on Winnipeg on several occasions in the first-half. Their best chance came off an early free kick. Brandon Miller took a ball outside the 18-yard box but his shot soared just over the crossbar.

The Cougars had several more strong pushes in the second-half but Tyson Farago stopped everything that came his way.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday afternoon. Match time is 3:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)
