Rookie midfielder Wilson Ntigne scored the lone goal of the match as the University of Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 1-0 Sunday afternoon in Saskatoon.
Ntigne found the net in the 32nd minute after a header by Sam Mylymok hit Winnipeg’s post bouncing out onto Ntigne’s head for the clear shot into the net.
With the win the Huskies improve their Canada West regular season record to 1-0-1, while Winnipeg is 0-1-1. On Friday night, the two teams played to a 2-2 draw in the first match of the season opening home-and-home series at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex. The next scoring opportunities didn’t come until the second half for either team. A Saskatchewan header from a corner kick nearly found the net in the 66th minute but Wesmen keeper Tyson Farago collected the ball in the air. Winnipeg answered back on the next trip down the field but Richard Rundle’s shot sailed over the cross bar.
The Wesmen’s two best chances to tie the game came in the closing minutes. Wesmen captain Adam Bromley sent a header over the crossbar in the 86th minute and a Wesmen corner kick in extra time was collected by a jumping Huskie keeper Mark Diakiw.
Winnipeg will be on the road next weekend in Calgary for a pair of matches against the Mount Royal Cougars. Match time on Saturday and Sunday is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

The Winnipeg Wesmen and University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves battled to a scoreless 0-0 draw on a blustery day Saturday afternoon at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex.
The windy conditions played a role as neither team was able to find the back of the net as both teams tried to gain the upper hand in the field position battle.
Both teams also fell victim to a goalkeepers best friend "the cross bar". The Timberwolves Catherine Blokker nailed the bar in the early stages of the opening half (eight minutes in) and in the late stages of the second half Winnipeg's Serafina Trunzo headed a ball right off the bar to keep the match scoreless.Winnipeg had 17 shots in the contest compared to 11 for the Timberwolves. The Wesmen carried the play in the second half out-shooting the visitors by a margin of 8-3.
The Wesmen wrap up their regular season opening home stand with a record of 0-1-1. Winnipeg will head onto the road next weekend to Saskatchewan to face the Huskies in Saskatoon on Saturday followed by a contest against the Regina Cougars on Sunday afternoon. The Timberwolves (0-0-1) will take on the Manitoba Bisons (1-0-0) tomorrow afternoon.
